All businesses can be analyzed by using the SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis is a tool used for the analysis of the internal strengths and weaknesses of a business and its external opportunities and threats.

In this case, the Microsoft Company could use a SWOT analysis, to know about the development in the market of his Xbox product. It would be very useful for them to know which are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that this product presents for them. The strengths are the positive aspects of the business arising from the internal audit; they are a controllable and internal. In this case, the company has a strong brand name, which could be a useful strength for them because they will sell more products to a greater audience. Also, the company has a strong relationship with retailers. The Xbox is also known between their customers for having a good quality in graphics. However this product might also have some weaknesses. The weaknesses are the negative aspects of the business arising from the internal audit; they are controllable and internal. In this case, one weakness for Microsoft is that in 2004, Xbox was weak selling in Asia, which we could infer affected the profits of the company.

The Microsoft Company might have some opportunities with the Xbox in the market. The opportunities might show up what chances are available for the business; they are uncontrollable, external, and related to the environment in which the business operates. In this case, one opportunity for the Xbox is that the internet gaming market is growing. Between the years of 2002 and 2004, Sega Dreamcast games quit the hardware business, which left an opportunity in the market for other businesses such as Microsoft.
