The Working Memory Model proposed a new way of interpreting the processing of information in STM, Discuss.

The working memory model provides and alternative to the Multi Storm model. The MS Model provides a very simplistic view of STM where as the WM model provides a more complex view of the memory store. It contains a number of components and sub systems, which form specialist tasks in STM including Reasoning, Learning, Comprehension, and Problem Solving. We see that memory is not necessarily gained from rehearsal but also from analysing, and evaluating information.

Baddeley suggested that once 7 digits of a sequence had been learnt, there would be no room in STM for anymore as capacity is limited.  He conducted a number of reasoning tasks (e.g. BA – A follows B (T or F)) and found that as the numbers in the reasoning tasks increased, the time taken to answer increased but only by a fraction of a second. The results of this test cannot be explained using the MS model. This experiment established the WM model which has a number of components. It shows that although capacity is full, STM is competent in fulfilling other tasks.

The Working Memory model shows STM as being made up of 3 components: The Central Executive, Phonological or articulatory loop & the Visuo Spatial Sketchpad.

The Central Executive supervises and coordinates the subsidiary systems in STM. It goes through the LTM and retrieves information required for particular tasks. In other words it shuts down the unimportant. For example when asked the colour of your car, your CE directs thought to the   Visual Spatial Sketch Pad which visualises the car to be able to recall its colour.
