The company has long-term relationships with vendors and writers. Each employee is considered valuable and has an identity in place within the organization. The top management is responsible for making most of the decisions. The sense of identity is strong amongst management employees. Each employee has designated titles and everyone identifies with the company processes. The recent change in company goals however, may seem challenging for some employees to identify with. For example, Mack Evans, CIO has just realized that the company may need to set aside some revenue on an upgrade in the software and hardware to support the e-commerce strategy plan. He was unable to identify with the company goals before and because of his delay in analyzing this critical aspect of e-books concepts can cause a delay in
implementation and cause other software issues causing a much larger loss of business. Authors like Will X. Harper however, do not approve of the project and cannot identify with the company goals because he fears his copyrights will be uses illegally by other people to reproduce copies of this work (University of Phoenix, 2009).Organizational culture refers to a system of shared norms, beliefs, values, and assumptions which binds people together, thereby creating shared meanings. This system is manifested by customs, norms, and habits that exemplify the values and beliefs of the organization. An organization’s culture provides a sense of identity for its members. The more clearly an organization’s shared perceptions and values are stated, the more strongly people can identify with their organization and feel a vital part of it (Gray & Larson, 2006).Project Management StructuresLike most organizations Harrison-Keys Publishing is facing issues with trying to create a framework under which the new strategy can be implemented because of the issues with ongoing projects. The issue with the outsourcing company Asian Digital not being able to meet their deadline is causing the recent publishing project a huge downfall. Jan Peters, Senior VP, Business Development and Head of the Implementation has been trying to contact the company in India but all in vain (University of Phoenix, 2009). Many business organizations have struggled with creating a system for organizing projects while managing ongoing operations. One of the major reasons for this struggle is that projects contradict fundamental design principles associated with traditional organizations (Gray & Larson, 2006).Employing a Project Scope ChecklistHarrison-Keys Publishing has developed a plan in place to increase the revenue and pick up on sales by introducing e-books for many of the consumer base. The company has employed a project scope which includes determining the project objective first, which is to increase revenue by reducing publishing costs and introducing e-books. The deliverables are specific and each department has deadlines and areas to work on. Main milestones are also defined and each employee in the top management has been briefed on respective departmental tasks have to be completes. Technical requirements have been notified by Mack Evans, CIO. Many limitations and exclusions still need to be identified. Once the process is implemented the company will review consumer responses and satisfaction levels to determine the success of the project (University of Phoenix 2009).Project scope is the keystone interlocking all elements of a project plan. Project Scope Checklist1. Project objective2. Deliverables3. Milestones4. Technical requirements5. Limits and exclusions6. Reviews with customer (Gray & Larson, 2006).Identify the implications of organizational culture on project structureHarrison-Keyes, Inc. is a publisher of print products. There organizational culture has always been centered on publishing business, scientific and technical information in print since they have opened. Lately Meg McGill, CEO, wants to implement an e-book project. While this project may give Harrison-Keyes a competitive edge in the Technology Age, many of its authors, including Will X. Harper, are reluctant about having their work reproduced digitally. The authors are content with the current organizational culture of Harrison-Keyes. The leadership team of Harrison-Keyes must collectively come up with an error-proof project structure to get the authors, who are accustomed to the normal organizational culture of printing books, to agree with the new direction Harrison-Keyes is headed (University of Phoenix, 2009).We have observed organizations successfully manage projects within the traditional functional organization because the culture encouraged cross-functional integration (Gray & Larson, 2006).Define end-state goals for project implementationFriar Tucker International’s CEO Ricardo Bellini clearly identified the end-state goals of the company. The vision of Friar Tucker International is “to be among the top ten hospitality service providers in the family entertainment business, based on superior service levels and innovative marketing”. Its corresponding mission is “to attract more visitors and customers, through food and entertainment facilities, and ensure a great family experience” (University of Phoenix, 2009). Defining the project scope sets the stage for developing a project plan. Project scope is a definition of the end result or mission of your project—a product or service for your client/customer. The primary purpose is to define as clearly as possible the deliverable(s) for the end user and to focus project plans (Gray & Larson, 2006). References Gray, Clifford F., & Larson, Erik W. (2006).
