Report on the Definitions of Leisure and (Travel&) Tourism

What Is Leisure?

According to the Collins GVNQ Intermediate Leisure and Tourism text book the term “Leisure” is defined as:

The opportunity available to the individual after completely the immediate necessities of life, when he or she has the freedom to choose, and engage in, an experience which is personally satisfying.

Leisure activities are up to individual preference and are variable. Leisure can be passive (i.e. eating out with family and friends) or active (i.e. playing sports) or can be a combination of both. Leisure can be taken at home (i.e. gardening) or away from home (i.e. going to the pub). Many factors have an impact on people’s leisure desires and choice of activities, including their age, sex, ethnicity, location, family circumstance, income, job, culture, and tradition. To allow for this wide range of influences, the Leisure and Tourism industries provide a very broad range of facilities, services and products to their customers.

In essence Leisure is:

An activity taken up by an individual in his/her free time that is personally rewarding.

What Is (Travel&) Tourism?

According to the Collins GVNQ Intermediate Leisure and Tourism text book the term “Tourism” is defined as:

The temporary, short-term movement of people outside the places they normally live and work, and their activities during their stay at these destinations. It includes travel for all purposes as well as day visits or excursions.

There are many different kinds of tourist, there are does that do it for reasons of leisure, business, education and for cultural and religious reasons. There are many official definitions of tourism, some state that you can only be classified as a tourist if you’ve left home for more than twenty four hours; others argue that you can be a tourist by leaving home for a few hours as an “excursionist”.

According to the Collins GVNQ Intermediate Leisure and Tourism text book the term “Travel” is defined as:

How people get to their chosen destination and how they travel around the area they are visiting.

There are many methods of travel, examples of these are, air, bus, car hire, coach, ferry, taxi and rail.

Tourists are classified according to their origin.

Overseas visitors traveling to the United Kingdom are called Incoming Tourists.

British Residents traveling abroad are referred to as Outgoing Tourists.

Domestic Tourists are British residents visiting places inside the United Kingdom.

In essence (Travel&) Tourism is:

 reason/s

(And) how you get to your chosen destination and travel around the area you are visiting.
