Individual Assessment Task

Group Development and Dynamics

In most situations in life you find yourself working in some sort of team or group whether it is at work or on social grounds. "A team is a small number of people with different skills who are committed to achieving a task, reaching goals and a situation where they find themselves mutually accountable" Katzenbach and Smith (1999). A good team has "high levels of communication, trust, good participation and high expectations". Adesso (1996).

During the 24 hour challenge each member of team 7 used skills to achieve success.

In completion of the 24 hour challenge there was a feeling of success in terms of group development as the team had bonded together better than through the format of just working together in lectures and group meetings. "It can take along time to develop a group". TUCKMAN B (1965), however I feel that the 24 hour challenge has sped up the development.

There are four stages to group development and Tuckmans small group development theory is a great example of how groups can develop to the best extent.

The four stages to group development are forming, storming, norming and performing. TUCKMAN B (1965) explains the first stage is "when the group members learn about each other and the task that needs to be performed". In this case this would be the first lecture when the groups were announced. At this point the group developed a weak cohesion as there were no signs of communication between the whole group and more of a discussion between 2 members. The second stage storming came about in the 24 hour challenge where the "group members started to be more comfortable with one another and engage in arguments and discussions" TUCKMAN (1965). This was the stage where group dynamics evolved as during discussion of the tasks ahead all group members interacted and influenced each other.  The (3rd) Norming stage was developed during the primary school day task as "group members set rules to how we would achieve the goal of finishing in the top 5 of the task, we addressed what types of communication would and would not help with the task". TUCKMAN.B (1965).  The last stage of Tuckmans model performing was not potentially successful to the last couple of hours of the 24 hours challenge. The group did perform together in mainly all tasks however it was not successful until the group had "reached a conclusion and implemented it". TUCKMAN.B (1965). This stage became successful during the ghost dancing task as every member concluded what would make the task a successful session and results were shown in the performance. In review of the four stages over the 24 hour challenge it is believed that there was an equal share of positive and negative results. In the table below positive and negative factors are shared and potential ways to resolve these factors in the rest of the group development.

Personal Performance

Each member of the group had different skills and attributes to contribute in the planning and performing of the 24 hour challenge. My therorictrical role was a Chairperson.  As a chair I should "initially focus on the groups objectives, inspire confidence, listen to others, lead a team without being an official leader and not be the most intelligent member on the team but gain loyalty". Lecture 2 (2009). Reminiscing the 24 hour challenge I did achieve some of the factors of my team type. I felt that during most of the 24 hour ...
