Critical Path Analysis

Maths Coursework - Decision & Discrete Critical Path Analysis - Building An Extended Bedroom My parents have decided to build an extension over our garage to add a fourth bedroom to the house as currently my two brothers are sharing a room and it has been decided that they are getting too old to share a room and need their own privacy. They want to know the minimum time to build and decorate the new bedroom and the minimum amount of people needed to complete the job. I am going to use critical path analysis to find these requirements out. Hopefully, my work will allow my parents to find out if how long this small extension will take to build and how many workers will need to be paid in order for the task to be completed successfully. The results that I will hopefully get will tell my parents how long the project will take and how many people will be needed to get the job done in the most efficient time. First, I need to transform the problem into a mathematical model that I can solve to provide me with the information. I need to make a list of all the activities that need doing to complete the task and construct a precedence table to show the order in which the activities need to be completed. The activities to complete the job are * Collect the building materials * Prepare the garage roof for building upon * Build the bedroom walls * Fit the bedroom window * Add the

Critical Path Analysis.

CRITICAL PATH ANALYSIS Introduction In projects made up of various activities where 'time is of the essence', the duration of each activity needs to be managed. Certain activities run simultaneously and some must precede others. If all activities are listed with their duration and preceding activities these can be networked visually. Earliest and latest times for each event (starting and finishing times for activities) can be established till the last activity. This saves time making the project as efficient as possible. Certain activities when delayed will increase the time of the entire project. These form a path known as the 'critical path' and show those 'critical activities' that have no spare time. All these steps make up the Critical Path Analysis. After analysis of the network a cascade chart can be formed with a corresponding resource histogram showing the number of workers throughout the project. The floats can be re-arranged to produce a levelled histogram where the number of workers are levelled out throughout the project. These are helpful in mall projects like cooking where they may only be two cooks to carry out the whole project ranging to large-scale projects like constructing a shopping centre. I am required to cook a meal consisting of 21 activities. This includes the preparing and clearing away of the meal. I am deciding to allocate 'get

Critical Path Analysis

Critical Path Analysis .Introduction Building web sites is one of my hobbies. Recently I have considered starting my own web site design business. Precedence networks are the perfect answer to arranging time and resources. There are many steps in the building process of a decent web site. It is very important to arrange activities in the correct order, thus preventing mistakes occurring later on in the building of the site. I will base my events on a standard web site, presuming it does not containing scripting or plug-in material, which has to be made from scratch. The events will use resources available on the Internet, whilst maintaining an original design and layout. This must be the case, otherwise some events could continue indefinitely. The listing of preceding activities alone provides a very helpful checklist of the main points required to make a working site. The precedence network and cascade activity diagram will show how to organise to time in the most efficient way, therefore producing a good finished product and satisfied customers. To be completed on time, the critical path on the precedence networks will highlight the importance of certain stages. Ideally, a site should be completed in two working days. This however is rarely the case as errors in the basic code can take hours to correct if it is not carefully executed at the beginning. The clients might

Critical Path Analysis: Redecorating a room.

nohmaanali Critical Path Analysis:Redecorating a room Redecorating rooms is a project thousands of families undertake every year and mine in particular like to redecorate every room of the house once a year. The process is carried out without any real planning or thought into the process. I feel that by carrying out a Critical Path Analysis coursework project on redecorating a typical room (for this project I will use my own room) I will be able to make the process far more efficient and save as much time and money as possible. A solution would be of great value not only in my home but such solutions would be of great benefit to many people who take the task of redecoration upon themselves. Before I can begin the investigation there are certain factors that I must assume in order to undertake the many activities involved in this investigation, the assumptions include:- * All resources are unlimited and at our disposal at any time during the project, i.e. all workers/tools/materials are present and no time is needed to collect them * Once an activity has started there will be no breaks or pauses until it is completed * The room will be received in a state where it is unfurnished and only minimal changes need to be made before work can begin such as removal of wallpaper or floorboards, items such as mirrors/hooks are not present * All resources are unlimited * All

Critical Discourse Analysis

Critical Discourse Analysis Social communication is increasingly becoming a subject of scientists' discussions from different disciplines, as well as ordinary language users. In contemporary social sciences, especially in linguistics, we see a clear shift to discourse. Discourse allows us to talk about use of the language, as well as the language as a socio-cultural activity. In this sense, discourse, on one hand, reflects the social reality, on the other hand, it shapes it, therefore participate in the creation and pass on different values, ideologies and symbolic power. This essay aims to show the definition of Critical Discourse Analysis and also show how useful it is for exploring issues of power and inequality in relation to gender. Since its introduction to modern science the term 'discourse' has taken various, sometimes very broad, meanings. Originally the word 'discourse' comes from Latin 'discursus' which means conversation, speech. Discourse refers to a wide area of human life. Being aware of differences between kinds of discourses indicates the unity of communicative intentions as a vital element of each of them. Seven criteria which have to be fulfilled to qualify either a written or a spoken text as a discourse have been suggested by Beaugrande (1981). These include: Cohesion - grammatical relationship between parts of a sentence essential for its

Management Tools - P2 Three tools or methods that are used within project management are the work-breakdown structure, Gantt chart and critical path analysis. I will describe each of these in more detail. Work break down structure - this is usually the first tool that is used when a project is commenced. A work breakdown structure is used after the scope has been broken down into tasks that need to be done. These are then organised into a tree structure depending on which area of the project they fall under. This then helps a project manager to get a complete picture of the project and everything that needs to be done. Above is a work breakdown structure showing the tasks of a project being broken down. From the structure you can see there are three levels with the level one being a main project definition; level two breaking the main project into smaller tasks; and level three showing the smaller tasks that need to be done in order to achieve the main project goal. When breaking down the project, the aim is to break the tasks down enough, so that estimations can be made regarding how long each individual task will take. Image taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_breakdown_structure/ Gantt charts - a Gantt chart is a bar chart that is used in project management to show each task and how long they will take. The two images above show a Gantt chart and the list

Critical analysis of journalist's work.

Critical analysis of journalist's work. The two pieces of journalism chosen for this analysis are Jeremy Clarkson's report on a short visit to Iraq 18 months on from the supposed end of the war there in 2003, and John Pilger's article concerning his arrival in, and initial experience of, Saigon during the Vietnam war in 1966. These two reports, and reporters, make a handy comparison. Although Jeremy Clarkson is viewed principally as motoring journalist he has the ability to adapt his journalistic skills to a range of subjects, some far removed from cars. For his motoring column in the Sunday Times Clarkson's style is humorous bordering on sarcasm, which works well and this style translates well to the subject of the controversial war in Iraq. The Sunday Times is a quality broadsheet newspaper aimed at the upper end of Britain's readership and is a market leader with an average Sunday sale of 1,395,046 copies, which represents a 50.58% share of this area of the market. Clarkson, being an out and out Conservative, is immediately identifiable with the readership of the Sunday Times, and his 'overgrown schoolboy' approach presents as a welcome relief amongst the principally serious editorials of the papers other journalists. In 'Behind Jeremy Lines' the situation in Iraq is revealed as totally opposite to what the politicians would have us believe, this is made apparent in the

Eudora Wetley "A Worn Path" symbolism analysis

Jason Martinez Martinez p. #1 English 102 Slaughter 6-25-12 A Worn Path “A Worn path”, by Eudora Welty, first published in 1941, contains in itself a vast array of ideas and symbols for readers to interpret. For this reason literary analysts still find the text as appealing today as it was seventy years ago. The characters and the events in this beautiful piece of literature have been analyzed time and again, yet the uncertainty of the text encourages the reader’s mind to draw meanings of his own. Eudora Welty was known for her beautiful use of symbolism and similes. In the short story “A Worn Path” her use of symbolism emphasis the social issues that hold greater meaning when seen from the historical perspective and encourage the reader to draw connections between the social dynamics of the era especially to the clearly stated racism, Christianity, and historical characters associated with both the blacks and Southern America. My hypothesis is that Phoenix Jackson and her journey are a pessimistic story about the destructive nature of racism and Southern Culture of that time, this story is told using symbolism. The short story, seemingly, is about a rather difficult journey made by an elderly black woman, through landscapes unsafe for a women with her fragility, encountering

Background of event Ariane 5 flight was Ariane 5's first test flight. It took place on 4 June 1996 but it failed. First Flight 501 after launch 37 seconds, at an altitude of about 3700 m, the launcher veered off its flight path, broke up and be disintegrated. It is one of the most infamous computer bugs in history. Image-1Fromwww.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/ctm/idm/cases/ariane.html At Kourou on the morning of 4 June 1996 the weather was acceptable for a launch and presented no obstacles. The only uncertainty thing is the visibility criteria. Originally launched time was 08h35 local time, but it delayed because of visibility issues. When visibility conditions improved as forecast and the launch was initiated at 09h 33mn 59s local time. The vulcain engine and the two solid boosters have been ignited. The vehicle performed a nominal flight until approximately 37 seconds. Then it started to break up and self-destructed. It occurred near to the launch pad. Therefore, all the launcher debris fell back onto the ground, scattered over an area of approximately 12 km east of

Okalahoma critical analysis

Okalahoma critical analysis By Sarah Dawson 11v4 The original production of Oklahoma opened at the St. James Theatre, New York, on Wednesday March 31, 1943. The top ticket price was $4.80. It ran on Broadway for over five years, besting the previous record holder Hellzapoppin by more than two years. For fifteen years, from 1946 until 1961, Oklahoma held the record as the longest running show in Broadway history. When Okalahoma closed on Broadway May 29, 1948 after 2,212 performances, more than four and a half million people had seen it there. In our expressive arts lesson we watched a section of Okalahoma. As our topic is dreams and nightmares, we watched the section where Laurey has her dream. In a swirl of dream images, Laurey sees herself marrying Curly when Jud invades the wedding; he carries her off, thwarts Curly's attempts to rescue her, and, after a horrific struggle, kills Curly. Laurey awakes from her nightmare with a start...and finds Jud ready to escort her to the Dance. In the beginning of this section we can see Laurey falling to sleep. Then the lights suddenly dim, this shows the audience that we have travelled from reality to her dream. The lighting plays an important part in this musical, as it communicates to the audience Laurey's mood and feelings. When Laurey is dreaming the light dims to a blue. Then hands appear from the
