Practical Task: Setting up a

Peer to Peer Network

In part one of the task we had to set-up the machines, printer, and the switch.

We had to set-up four machines one for each user; we then connected those machines to the switch.  Only one of the machines needed to be connected to the printer, as the others would be able to use it through the network.

When we first entered the practical room each user had to locate and set-up a:

  • Base unit
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse

When this was done we nominated a network manager.  It was there job to insure that each machine was connected to the switch via a network cable.  The machines we used were:

  • Centreprise

There specification is:

  • Pentium lll Processor
  • Running at 600Mhz
  • 64Mb RAM

The network cable was:

  • Unshielded Twisted Pair
  • RJ 45 connection

To direct the data on the network and to connect the machines we used the following:

  • Netgear 5 Port Fast Ethernet Switch

The printer used was an:

  • HP Deskjet 660c

This was only connected to the end machine.

The software we used was Microsoft Professional.  To create the network we used the network software that was already included in the Microsoft operating system.

When all of the machines and above hardware was connected we then moved on to setting up the network and creating the users.  The first thing that we had to do was to make sure that the LAN settings were correct and to make sure that the correct protocol was being ...
