Transforming the law is my passionate belief that I.T can be used to increase access to justice.

'The second theme of the book Transforming the law is my passionate believe that I.T can be used to increase access to justice. Through the internet, I argue non-lawyers will be able to identify and understand their legal rights and duties and be able to pursue their entitlements far more easily than has ever been possible in the past. When I refer to access to justice I mean more than speedier, cheaper and less combative mechanisms for dissolving disputes, I am also referring to the avoidance of disputes through better understanding of the law, and readier and more widespread appreciation and harnessing of the benefits that the law can offer.' This statement is by Richard Suskind a leading and respected writer Before computers and the internet became so popular if you had a question of law and did not have a legal person as a friend or family member the only other avenue for seeking advice would be via a lawyer/solicitor. This was normally a costly way to find out information, firstly you are charged a fee just for enquiring about a case. Most people did not go down this avenue due to mainly time and costs. With the introduction home computers and having 24/7 access to the internet people had more than that small restricted avenue, It was the world. Oftel released the latest figures in its regular quarterly look at consumers' use of the internet. Before now the

Video Conferencing Report

Video Conferencing Report References- Huddersfield New College is considering installing a video conferencing system in the ICT department. This will hopefully enable students to interact with organisations by looking at the use of ICT in the workplace and also holding discussions with local employers. My task is to produce a research report on video conferencing. My research will be aimed at the ICT Strategy group who makes decisions on ICT investment in the college. Procedures- I decided to do some research into video conferencing to find out about the pluses and minuses before I started to do my report. This would give me background knowledge and would aid me to produce a full report and decided if video conferencing really is a good idea for college. I started off by learning about the cost and equipment needed for video conferencing. This would help me see if it was going to be very expensive for the college and therefore not worthwhile or on the other hand if it would be very cost effective and be a good idea. I researched through a variety of sites about video conferencing to help me do this. I then moved on to finding about how hard it would be to set up and use, because if it would be really complicated it wouldn't be a good idea because it would take a lot of experienced staff to help the students learn, but if my research proved that video conferencing was

Our aim was to not only create a website enabling people to research science fiction, but also to help us to understand science fiction more as we are studying it for our exams.

Practical Production Evaluative Commentary Planning Our aim was to not only create a website enabling people to research science fiction, but also to help us to understand science fiction more as we are studying it for our exams. We have aimed our website particularly at males who are 15-30 years of age. We chose males since our research has shown that they are more interested in science fiction, than females; an interest which is maintained as they grow older. We first mapped out the foundation of our website. For example: what was going to be on the website; what the main theme was and how many pages we were going to have. We decided what to include on each page. Then the research that we undertook was to analyse different websites. Initially we studied a range of general websites that we found through a search engine to see how our website should be laid out and what extra accessories could be added to make it more interesting and enjoyable. We then looked at science fiction pages on the web to see what kind of specific information they had on them, and to see if we need to add anything to our plan. We also found out what the implications were if we needed to take a picture from another site and put it on ours, and how to gain permission. Production During the summer I met up with Harinder to start building our website and to get an idea of what it would include and

The effect of the Internet on ordinary Media.

The effect of the Internet on ordinary Media. The web started of as a very fast, chaotic, and confusing networking system that connected the world. After 20 years, to see how it has affected the usual ways of getting information, the study has been set up and was based on more than 3,000 interviews from adults aged 18 or older who had accessed the Internet in the past month. This research was conducted by 65 UK leading markets. More than 60 percent of the respondents to a survey chose the Internet for personal and special interest information needs, compared to 18 percent for magazines. When looking for work-related information, 48 percent of the respondents chose the Internet, and only 7 percent preferred magazines. The study also revealed that once consumers begin using the Web, they use it more frequently as their experience increases, and that these same users also tend to use traditional media sources significantly less. The research shows that exposure and experience with the Web is changing consumers' fundamental attitude towards traditional media. In comparison with other media sources, we found that user control is a critical preference attribute of the Internet as a medium, providing individual control over content source, time of access, content depth and other parameters. The survey reveals that there is a fundamental shift in media consumption occurring,

How I use ICT

How I use ICT Whether we like it or not, ICT and technology has a huge impact upon all of our lives, whether in business or our personal lives. The technology that is incorporated in everyday domestic appliances is enormous. The majority of homes have telephones, televisions, microwaves other kitchen appliances. These all have macro processors to control their function. Almost every home nowadays has a fridge or a fridge freezer. Macro processors and thermostats control the temperature of the fridge freezer. Before these inventions, food could not be kept for any significant period of time. Disease and illness, due to the consumption of rotten food, was very common. In my house I have access to digital television. The menu system and programming guides that are built into the system allow me to select the programmes that I want to view with ease. Within my system I can interactively play games and look at the latest news and sport headlines. Without this technology this information was not readily available. I have a personal computer at home. This has many applications available to me. I use Word to produce documents, such as this. Use of this technology allows me to concentrate on the content of this essay rather than writing it out. Also, the use of the computer allows me to make corrections and changes to the work easily without having to write it all out

Are Supermarkets Competitive?

Working as an Economist Are Supermarkets Competitive? There is no doubt that supermarkets are competitive - not only amongst each other, but also when it comes to beating local shops. Such stores as Tesco and Sainsbury's have revolutionised the way in which shop, making it easier to find more goods under one roof. But how much do you actually save by visiting such stores? And is it really worth it? To put together an investigation to compare prices between local retailers and supermarket chains would need a lot of time and effort. The competition between a small shop selling one good, and that selling a whole range of goods is variable. The supermarkets know that if someone is going to shop at their store anyway, then they can price certain products at a cost that suits them. For nowadays, people tend to do the majority of their shopping at one store. It may be a hassle for them to travel to each individual local retailer to buy the goods (and would sometimes work out more expensive if counting travel costs) and so even if they have to pay a little extra, it works out as marginal in the whole scheme of things. Many supermarkets claim that they are always cheaper than their counterparts but in reality, most stores have fairly equal prices. If I was going to carry out a survey to find out which stores worked out to be the best value for money, it would be necessary to select

Normalisation in a Video Library

Stephen Mathieson NORMALISATION A video library operates in a similar way to any normal library, so the first thing to do is to write down a list of attributes for the whole of the system. It would in this case be easy to put the attributes straight into separate tables but in a more complex system this would not do. It is also important not to list to many attributes, only keeping it to the ones that are definitely needed. MEMBER (Membership number, Surname, Forename, Title, Street, Town, Postcode, Date of birth, Tel. No., (Video number, Video title, Category, Cost, Price, Rental price, Date borrowed)) At this stage I have placed all the attributes into the entity MEMBER. I must now go through the normalisation process to determine how many tables are needed and which ones they will be. Due to the video details being repeating attributes they need to be removed and put into 1NF by being giving their own entity. MEMBER (Membership number, Surname, Forename, Title, Street, Town, Postcode, Date of birth, Tel. No.,) Membership Number is underlined because in this case it is a key field, all the other attributes relate to this field. VIDEO RENTAL (Membership number, Video number, Video title, Category, Cost, Price, Rental price, Date borrowed) The data now needs converted to 2NF. This needs to be done because the attributes do not depend on both keys. Video number,

The Filtering of Adult Pornography on the Internet

The Filtering of Adult Pornography on the Internet According to an estimate made in April of 2002, 165.75 million people in the United States, approximately 59 percent of the entire American population, were online (NUA). With such a large number of people connected to the Internet, concerns for the safety of viewers have arisen, especially in the area of adult pornography. Many of the people who oppose adult pornography have advocated a law requiring Internet filters that restrict access to all pornographic material on the Internet. However, a law that requires Internet filters for all citizens are not the best solutions because there is insufficient justification to implement them and that many problems would occur from their implementation. The filtering of adult pornography on the Internet is not justifiable for a myriad of different reasons. First, children can be protected from accidentally viewing pornography through more convenient solutions than a law requiring Internet filters. Secondly, there is insufficient evidence showing the negative effects of adult pornography on the adult population to warrant an Internet filter that restricts all Internet pornography websites. Thirdly, the first amendment rights given to every citizen would be violated by a law calling for Internet filters. Finally, Internet filters may not only block adult pornography websites, but

Commentary on Four Websites

Commentary on Four Websites By Katy Bergson In this essay I shall be considering the effectiveness of four websites. I shall be looking particularly at where and what the creators have put on the site. Also the way pictures, writing, colour and graphics are used. They probably spent a long time designing and putting it together. I will try and pick out the main decisions and choices they have made. This will help us understand more about language used to welcome and invite. The sites I have chosen to look at are Amazon (the UK site), BBC online, Cornwallis School and Sky sports. The sites all have different purposes and are designed to that particular genre's specification. Amazon is a site aiming to sell. BBC online is more about information but it is also promoting its channels. Cornwallis School Site is there to give information about that school. Finally Sky Sports is giving information while at the same time promoting itself (like BBC online). The content of the sites is obviously quite varied but much more striking than that, is the design of them. All four websites have chosen to lay out their sites in very different ways. The design of a site is incredibly important. If a site is not to the viewers liking, they would leave. This is especially important with Amazon because they depend on people staying on the site and feeling happy with it (so
