In What Ways Does Lee Portray Atticus as a Positive Role Model in To Kill a Mockingbird?

In What Ways Does Lee Portray Atticus as a Positive Role Model in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'? Harper Lee uses a variety of techniques in which to portray Atticus as a positive role model to both the characters of the book and also the reader. The first of these methods is the way in which she presents Atticus as a seemingly boundless source of erudition. Atticus teaches nearly all of his lessons to his two children, Jem and Scout, and also in the first section of the novel. For example, Atticus says, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This is particularly profound, and teaches the children the main moral of the book; never judge people merely by their superficial impression upon you. This also teaches the children only to cast your judgment upon someone once you have gotten to know them, and understand them fully. This, like many of Atticus'' lessons, represents the two mockingbirds of the story: Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. Atticus also teaches his children a cornucopia of lessons to do with the 'mockingbirds' of 'To Kill a Mockingbird', the most obvious being the advice that he imparts to his children shortly after giving them both air rifles. He says, "Remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This is probably the most significant and well-known quotations from the

What Zimbardo's Experiment taught me About People and Conformity?

What Zimbardo's Experiment taught me About People and Conformity? Zimbardo's experiment was a classic experiment in social Psychology in the 1973. It is also a Key Study for the Conformity area of this unit. The whole experiment taught me that good people will soon rebel and would be difficult to handle in a complex situation. When the prisoners arrived to their jail they were blind folded and in a state of mud shock over their surprise arrest by the city police. They were put into a car and driven to the "Stanford County Jail". After arriving at the jail the prisoners where searched and stripped naked and then sprayed to get rid of any unwanted germs or lice. However the psychological consequences of stripping, delousing, and shaving the heads of prisoners or members of the military, can cause series of mental emotions to form. This can destroy the independence of the person and make them seem as though they are a number and nothing else. To further promote the prisoners anonymity, the guards wore mirror like sunglasses prevented anyone from seeing their eyes or reading their emotions. This slowly formed a huge impact on the prisoners and cause distress to them as well. The rebellion began into the morning of the second day in the jail and soon after conformity took its place. An example of conformity which took place in this experiment, was when one of the prisoners

"Changing The World In One Day"

Steven Hinchee AMH2020.11Z Brevard Community College Summer 2004 Word Count: 542 "Changing The World In One Day" "December 7, 1941, a day that will live in infamy." These were the words, used by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to descried the day that the Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack against the United States. The attack was a brilliant military strike against the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. This was the day that thrust the United States into World War II. On December 8, President Roosevelt gave an inspirational speech to Congress and the American people. During his speech, Roosevelt asked Congress for a declaration of war against Japanese Empire . I have often wondered what would happen if the events of that day had not gone as the Japanese had planned. The American Military knew the Japanese were planning some kind of attack. We had already broken the Japanese code, so we had intelligence that suggested an attack was immanent, just nothing to indicate the time or place. Just imagine how different things would have been if we were able to intercept the attack. In fact, U.S. radar actually detected the incoming Japanese attackers. Unfortunately, they were mistaken for B-17s that were scheduled to arrive from the mainland. We had our chances to avoid a tragedy and missed all of them. What would have happened if the United States

The Battle of Dieppe.

THE BATTLE OF DIEPPE (The essay) By: Thai Tran The Battle of Dieppe was a very shameful thing for the Nation of Canada because of the military failure. The allied troops were mostly inexperienced or had very little experience to be in this battle. Many Canadians lost their lives in this bloody battle. If the General of the Allied forces took the time to prepare more and learn the defences of enemy better than maybe the battle would be different. This whole battle was so unorganized that there are no words to describe how bad the preparation was. Many of the soldiers that were expected to go to overseas to fight had barely any experienced and they were lead by a poor General. Most of the soldiers had basic training, but it didn't help them in bomb exploding. All of them might have been waiting for a short time or some had to wait for 2 months before engaging into battle which took their life in an instant. If the Allied General was more aware of the battle 907 Canadians wouldn't lose their lives on August 9, 1942 in the battle of Dieppe. Instead of the soldiers sitting around they could have took the precautions of preparing for an attack such as having drills of actual attacks, etc. There are ways of gaining information about the enemy's defence system. Instead of attacking an enemy without thinking of the consequences first there will be harsh outcomes in the end. If

Immigration to Spain has increased rapidly over the last few years.

Immigration to Spain has increased rapidly over the last few years, one of the most obvious reasons being its proximity to North-Africa. One indicator of this increase is the number of petitions entered for a residence permit. The total of these petitions in 1999 reached about 95,000, doubling that of 1998 By the end of 2000 this number will have doubled again, or even tripled. However, the proportion of foreign people living in Spain is barely 2%, not much at all compared with 6% in France and 9% in Germany. Immigration is not going away, and many people think it shouldn't. Apart from the evident fruits that multiculturalism and cultural exchange bear, apart from the just as obvious call for solidarity with people leaving their countries in search of a better life, and apart from the fact that immigration to Europe has become inevitable, there are some pragmatic reasons to welcome non-EU citizens within our borders. Europe's demographic situation is one of them. Our population is growing slowly and ageing rapidly. Several studies indicate that if this pattern does not change, within five years time we will have difficulty providing the elderly with their well-deserved (and just as keenly-anticipated) pensions. The active population working to pay for those pensions will be unable to keep up with the ever growing group of retired people unless immigration counters this

Is the British prime minister now effectively a president?

Is the British prime minister now effectively a president? One of the reason that prime minister has become more president the cabinet and key government departments have seen their role taken over by the prime minister and a small group of downing Street officials and advisers. Thus the machinery of the central government has become increasingly similar to the White House machinery. Sir Christopher Meyer, the former British Ambassador in Washington DC, has claimed that Jack Straw and the Foreign Office were sidelined as most communication was directly between Downing Street and the Washington embassy. Although the Prime Minister is not officially the head of state, he or she increasingly assumes the stature of a presidential-style head of the state. This could be clearly seen in Blair's premiership. In his leadership of the G8 and the EU in 2005, he assumed a distinctly presidential stature. His close relationship with Presidents Clinton and Bush has enabled him to strike an overtly presidential pose. Therefore it can be argued that there has been a long-term drift towards seeing the prime minister of the day, rather than the monarch, as national leader. Another factor that shows that the British Prime Minister is now effectively president is the concept of spatial leadership. This suggests that these leaders deliberately make themselves into outsiders within government.

Written Performance Concept for Total Eclipse by Christopher Hampton

Written Performance Concept Total Eclipse Christopher Hampton Total Eclipse was written in 1967 by Christopher Hampton. The play is about two poets, Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. I played Rimbaud who was a radical that believed that to be a writer he had to experience as much as possible in mind and body. and I decided that whilst in character I would try and convey the idea that Rimbaud had very strong feelings for Verlaine but I didn't like showing it to him because as he was married and had another life to fall back on without Rimbaud, whereas Rimbaud had nothing else. This also makes him very dependant on Verlaine especially seeing as without him, Rimbaud would have nowhere to live. This play covers a number of very powerful and fragile topics such as homosexuality, which during the late nineteenth century was not approved of, and abuse. Verlaine best depicts this as he is very abusive to his wife Mathilde even during her pregnancy, and has blatant homosexual feelings for Rimbaud. Rimbaud too is very abusive; in an act of rage and sexual frustration he stabs Verlaine in the hand. A key moment in rehearsal for me was when I realised that whilst playing Rimbaud I would have to express that he shows two very different sides to his personality to Verlaine, one is very playful and loving and the other is very aggressive and unpredictable. We chose a scene that consists

For my work experience, I opted to go to a local chemist, 'Health Serve Pharmacy', which is in Evington.

Work Experience Speech For my work experience, I opted to go to a local chemist, 'Health Serve Pharmacy', which is in Evington. Initially, I wanted to go to a pharmacy for the first week, and a local community centre for the second week. However, due to the cost implications involved, the school said that it would be better if I remained at one place for the whole two weeks. For this reason, I chose to work in a chemist for both weeks. I thought that by working in a chemist, I would learn the key skills required in retail, and I would be able to boost my confidence. During the course of my placement at the chemist, I regretted my decision. I began to wish that I had gone to the community centre, because I would have been able to meet a wide diversity of people, whereas, in the chemist, I met the same people everyday. My first day at the chemist went contrary to my expectations. I obviously expected to be greeted by my supervisor, and thereafter explained the health and safety regulations. However, this was not the case. When I reached the chemist, I asked to see my supervisor, but was surprised to find out that she was on holiday, and would be returning the following day. The other staff at the chemist had no idea which tasks to set me with, so I spent the entire day tidying shelves and restocking. I worked daily, from 10am to 6.30pm, with a 11/2-hour lunch break. My

I will be presenting a speech which provides my opinion on whether I believe Rubin Carter was guilty of committing a crime

Good morning teachers and students today I will be presenting a speech which provides my opinion on whether I believe Rubin Carter was guilty of committing a crime for the triple murder on June 17, 1966 in the Lafayette Grill in Paterson, New Jersey. The information I have gathered to support my opinion are based on the movie "The Hurricane" starring Denzel Washington, and various websites such as Cal Deal's, "The other side of the story". In the movie there are many gaps and silences, whereas Cal Deal's website has no gaps and silences. For instance, the movie did not mention that two blacks served on the jury in Carter's second trial. But although Cal Deal's website contains no gaps and silences, the fact that the time of the crime occurred at 2:30 and not 2:45 as depicted in the movie still proves that Carter had an alibi since he was still at the nite spot at the time of the murder. After watching the film, I instantly believed that Rubin Carter was not guilty. However after researching Carter's case through various websites, the proof is not absolute that Carter is innocent. According to the movie, he had an unfair trial due to racial issues, the juries consisted of all white people, the police involved in the investigation were corrupt since they suppressed information, the court worked against Carter assuming that he was already guilty before even presenting evidence,

How Do We Stop the Excessively High Teenage Pregnancy In Lambeth?

How Do We Stop the Excessively High Teenage Pregnancy In Lambeth? In today's society, sex is a taboo. Many parents feel uneasy talking to their children about the facts of life. Many schools do not teach sex education, and if they do they skim through it concisely. This means many adolescents are ignorant when it comes to knowledge of sex. In result there are many teenage pregnancies. There are many other factors, which contribute to the high level of teenage pregnancies. E.g. Many teenagers are thrown out of their abode or they choose to leave on their own accord. Some or if not all housing agencies have first priority to those who are pregnant or have children. Some teenagers feel the only way they can get a flat to live in is to get pregnant. In order to try and resolve this problem there should be no first priority, those who are homeless should be found a home as soon as possible therefore teenage girls would not have to get pregnant specifically for a place to reside. Contraception should be available free of charge for those teenagers who feel they are mature enough to make a commitment. It is a likelihood that if the contraception is free they will use it whereas if it has to be paid for then they probably will not buy it because of the shortage in cash. Many males feel that their social status will rise if the amount of girls they have they have had sex with is
