An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls English Literature Course Work Written Task In act one of An Inspector Calls how does Priestley use dramatic devices to convey his concerns and ideas to the audience as well as interest and involve them in the play. An Inspector Calls is a well-made play. Its progression is that from ignorance to knowledge, not only for the audience but also for the characters themselves. The place, the Birlings dining-room, is a detailed, naturalistic setting to set the tone of the comfort, success and self-satisfaction required to correspond with the initially celebrating family. It is also constant throughout; and the action and dialogue all contribute to the central theme of the play, with nothing extraneous to distract the audience's attention. The play is set in 1912 but when the play was written in 1945, people had just been through two world wars and were optimistic about there future. Reading it now we know that the world has improved. Our reaction to the play now must be different to what it was then. The people who had read it in 1945 will be able to realate to it more than most other people because they were there and could of said the same thing as Mr Birling about there not being, how Mr Birling put it ''...a chance of war. The worlds developing so fast it'll make war impossible''. Mr Birling is convinced there will not a war and makes us think of Mr

How does Priestley use characterisation to convey his own opinions and attitudes in the play "An Inspector Calls"? "An Inspector Calls" was written by the British dramatist John Boynton Priestley. Priestley was born in 1894 in Bradford and grew up there. After living through World War II he was very concerned about the class system in the UK, how huge the difference was between the upper and the lower class. In this major war Priestley also experienced the barbarity and cruelty that people had to live through. As he was a socialist, Priestley was absolutely against capitalism and promoted socialism. John Priestley's best known play "An Inspector Calls" was written in 1945. He set this play in 1912 because in his play he wants to show the audience in 1945 how huge the difference was between the times he wrote the play and when it was set in. In 1912 there was peace and not any sign of conflict because there had not been a war for a very long period of time in Europe. The upper class believed that there could not be any war in the future. By setting the play before the two major world wars Priestley was able to speak more strongly to the audience that lived through this time of despair. The play shows the Birling's household, which is representing the upper class at that time. The Birlings are visited by an alleged inspector in order to investigate the suicide of a young girl

An Inspector Calls This assignment is to explain how J.B Priestley shifts the dramatic power from Mr Birling to the inspector within the play, 'An Inspector Calls.' This play was written in 1946, but it was set in 1912. This was a time when -The Titanic sank -Women were put in a position that they didn't want to be in (equal rights) -The people that were poor were put in the lower deck of the ship -All of the rich people were treated like snobs The play begins with Mr Birling asking Edna, the house maid, for the port because Sheila Birling is getting engaged with Gerald Croft and all of the family are celebrating it. (p.2) Mr Birling is the head of the Birling household and always sits at the head of the table. Mr Birling loves talking and never stops. He gives very long, boring and tiring speeches and there all a load of rubbish. Two of his longest speeches are about the titanic and wars in the world. When he talks about the titanic he says that a luxurious 40 ton ship couldn't sink but it did. He is described in the play as a heavy-looking man, with a rather boastful manner in his middle fifties. He is dedicated to his business, which is involved in producing furniture, and it is necessary that he enjoys the engagement of his daughter and Gerald Croft because it is good for his business. So basically he is a selfish capitalist who cares more about money than

An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls Dear Miss Alba, Congratulations you have successfully got the part of Sheila Birling in An Inspector Calls. I enclose some information regarding your forth coming role in Priestley's, ground breaking hit. It is a challenging role which will delight the audience and create some very dramatic moments. Before I inform you on how you play your part I feel it would be useful for you to know that the play was written in 1945 but would be set in 1912 because J.B. Priestley wanted to show his concerns about the society. I believe that it would be useful for you to know that Sheila Birling was not a typical 1912 girl, and any audience would observe from the moment she first speaks on stage. As you are aware in 1912, British society was run by men, and women were aware of the inequalities of their sexes. If you were a low working class, you would be expected to work around 12 hours in bad working conditions. You will be uneducated and be working for the upper class. However if you had a high class and status in society you will be happy with money, power, educated, rich and be living in luxury. This is precisely the role in which you will be playing, as Sheila Birling. This play is about a Birling family who are joyfully celebrating their daughter's engagement to Gerald Croft. When inconveniently an inspector shows up investigating a suicide of a young-working

An inspector calls: who is the inspector and why does he call? The following essay will question who the enigmatic inspector is and how J.B Priestly "the social critic", incorporates dramatically effective devices into the play. I would like to begin the essay with some background information about priestly and why it is he decided to write this play. John Boynton Priestly was a socialist writer who used an inspector calls to convey his message of equality among all the classes; he had strong political views and was concerned about the inequality between different statuses in society. Social Darwinism was widely practised all over the country and he felt it was wrong and unjustified. He was so concerned that he, along with others, set up a new political party called the commonwealth party. Priestly was a strong believer that future conflicts could only be avoided by mutual respect and understanding between the countries. Consequently, he became an active member of the early movement of the United Nations. The play was written during the Edwardian era, also known as Belle Époque -meaning beautiful era, when the British class system was at its most rigid. Coincidentally, it was at this time that socialism was beginning its rise which bought to attention the conditions of the poor and the status of women. It may have been due to Priestley's potent socialist beliefs that the

I have read a play called an inspector calls by J.B priestly. The story is about a family called the Birlings and their involvement to a suicidal murder, of a girl by the name of Eva smith. The main characters are the members of the Birling family, Author Birling, Sybil Birling his wife, Sheila and Eric their two children, And also Gerald croft, a young man who's getting engaged to Sheila. Before the arrival of the inspector in the first act, The Birling family is gathered on a dinner table dressed in evening clothes. The lightning is pink and intimate, which creates a casual celebrating atmosphere as the family is gathered round celebrating the engagement of Sheila and Gerald croft. But when the inspector arrives the lighting becomes brighter and harder which helps to create the audients attention. Mr. Birling talks about employers and how they will never strike even if they don't get paid enough. As long as the employees get the interest that the only thing that matters to him which gives the impression that he is a hard headed businessman. When the inspector arrives the stage lightings becomes brighter and harder which helps to grab the audients attention. And as he enters he is described to be a man in his fifties dressed in a plain darkish suit of the period and speaks carefully and weightily. Also he is described to have a habit of looking hard at the person he is

An inspector calls

An Inspector Calls 'An Inspector Calls' is a play set in the mystery/ detective thriller genre. It is set in 1912; however it was written by J.B Priestly in 1945 and first staged in Moscow. As he lived through both wars he could see what had actually happened in the time the play was set. This allowed him to contradict the ways in which people lived and the way the political parties governed the country as he had an insight to the outcomes and consequences to their decisions. He was a realist, challenging its cause-and-effect structure and its closed system of action with a series of plays that used the dimension of time in unconventional and surprising ways. Priestly uses the characters to express his views on the issue of social responsibility, morality and about class divisions with many themes including greed, regret, guilt and blame. In the opening of 'An Inspector Calls' the audience learns of the Birling family who are wealthy. They are celebrating their daughter's engagement with her fiancé, Gerald. The Inspector arrives and breaks up the party, questioning the family on the death of a young Eva Smith, who had killed herself by drinking disinfectant. Upon questioning each member of the family seems to be involved in her death and is slowly forced to confess. When the Inspector finally leaves they find out that he is a fake. However at the very end they get a phone

An inspector calls - An introduction

An inspector calls The play "An Inspector calls" was written by J.B. Priestly in 1945. It was set in a Midland Industrial town in 1912. The plot of this dramatic play is based around a visit by an inspector to an apparently normal and well-respected family. All the characters are affected by the death of Eva Smith, but Sheila Birling shows the greatest remorse and changes the most. In this essay, I will discuss how Sheila changes during the play and her role in the death of Eva Smith. I am also going to briefly discuss about the other characters. In the play "An Inspector calls", each character reacts differently. Mr Birling, Sheila's father is arrogant and outspoken about his self-centred beliefs of the world "a man has to mind his own business and look after his own." He is less vocal as the inspector starts questioning them and appears somehow ashamed as the story develops. His involvement In Eva Smiths' case is that he sacked her from a job she needed dearly. The inspector mentions that this plays a part in her suicide. However at the end, when the inspector departs he returns to his old self, choosing to ignore the inspector's lesson. He puts it aside stating the fact that Goole was a "hoax". He is only concerned on how it might have Affected his knighthood. Lady Birling, is the most reluctant to admit her guilt in the girl's Death. She is portrayed as

An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls In Act One of 'An Inspector Calls' how does J.B Priestly use dramatic devices to convey his concerns and ideas to the members of the audience, as well as interest and involve them in his play? 'An Inspector Calls' is a play written by J.B Priestly in 1945, which contains a strong socialist message to portray and broadcast his opinions of Edwardian Britain, using Inspector Goole as a mouthpiece to express them. The Inspector shows the Birlings' that everyone's lives are linked, and that no matter what working class someone may be, they are still of equal status. Priestly was concerned about the treatment of lower working class people, and how Capitalism made a strong discriminative divide between people of different working classes. The play is set in 1912, to use retrospect as a tool to make Mr Birling seem an ignorant and stupid character. Mr Birling believes that there won't be a war and that the Titanic is "unsinkable". However there were 2 World Wars and the Titanic sank between when the play was set and when the play was written. It was written as a detective story, to interest and grip the audience so they would be interested in the morals of Priestly's socialist views. Dramatic irony is used early on in the play in many of Mr Birling's speeches to his family. This is to make Mr Birling look obnoxious and stupid, making the audience feel negative

An Inspector Calls An Inspector Calls was written in 1945 and was set in 1912 in a house owned by a high class family and is about what they have done wrong. The play was by J.B Priestly. The time that the play was set was set in is important, as world war one was going to start in a few years and the Titanic was just about to set sail. In the play Mr Birling says that we will never go to war with Germany. "The Germans don't want war. Nobody wants war", and he also says that the titanic is unsinkable "Why, a friend of mine went over this new liner last week - the Titanic - she sails next week - forty-six thousand eight hundred tonnes - New York in five days - and ever luxury - and unsinkable.", he is wrong about both of these. J.B Priestly was born in Bradford, Yorkshire on 13th September 1894 he was a playwright. Before becoming a playwright he wrote two novels. His first novel was the bestselling The Good Companions (1929) and his second novel was Angel Pavement (1930).
