The Role of Women: A Personal Perspective Based Upon Imagery and Informal Diction

The Role of Women: A Personal Perspective Based Upon Imagery and Informal Diction The role of women in many societies is one of oppression and though many women remain silent about their desires for equality, some refuse to accept their societies' views. The characters of Esther Greenwood and Ramatoulaye Fall both recognize what society expects of them, due to certain events in each character's life. Esther, a character in The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, begins to recognize her dismay with what is expected of her because she is a woman, and therefore she accepts her journey towards understanding of her society but yet living on her own terms. Mariana Ba portrays the character of Ramatoulaye, in the novel So Long a Letter, as an independent woman struggling to find reason with her husband's acceptance of the Muslim tradition of polygamy. Both women search for understanding of their respective societies' views of women, and through their quest, they become aware of whom they are as people and come to recognize the importance they each have as individuals. The novels in which these characters grow towards personal acceptance of what their roles in society illustrate this through informal diction and imagery, which both serve to assist in a better examination of their roles as women in society. While examining her role as a woman in society, Esther focuses mainly upon her

Private sector businesses 2.

Private Sector Businesses 2 Franchises A franchise is a way of owning a business without taking the normal risks of starting out on your own. It is little wonder, then, that it is so popular! Benetton, Prontoprint, Wimpy, Kentucky Fried Chicken, BSM and Body Shop are all examples of franchises. These are enterprises where a small shop or outlet is run by a franchisee, who has been given permission to operate the business by a franchisor the organization which owns the product or service being sold. The franchisee gets the benefit of the franchisor's expertise in marketing and operations. The franchisor will often supply the raw materials or stock for sale, provide shop displays and give help and advice to the franchisee, who usually has the exclusive right to operate in a certain geographic area. The franchisee has the responsibility of running the business on a day-to-day basis and can keep most of the profits. However, he or she must raise most of the capital and pay an initial licensing fee to the franchisor. In addition, the owner must pay a share of the annual profits to the franchisor for the use of the trade name (royalties). Franchises in Britain are overseen by the British Franchise Association (BFA) which operates a code of conduct for its members. Franchises also operate in areas other than retail. These include: . goods and services sold direct to the

Property sector analysis

Property Sector Analysis: Food Retail(supermarkets) I am conducting a report on the current state of the food retail industry with supermarkets being my main focus. Smaller family run convenience stores will also be analysed and my main supermarket focused on is Tesco, which is number one in the UK. What is a supermarket? The core purpose of the food retail industry is to provide the public with a place to purchase food. This sounds a simple task but its a type of industry that is essential in todays society and needs to be done effectively. The days of people growing or providing their own food are minimal and the public now have come to expect that everything that they require is all under one roof. Each supermarket will have a different customer base but the most succesful supermarkets appeal to a variety of social classes. Tesco has become extremely successful recently for this reason. They used to be seen at aiming their products towards a lower social class but changed their stategy and tried to appeal to the higher classes. They did this by bringing in the Tesco 'finest' range. This gives a bigger variety for customers appealing to a broader group of people. Services and products offered by most supermarkets in the UK * Alcoholic products * Baby foods and products * Bakery * Books, newspapers and magazines * Car products * CD's and DVD's * Confectionary *

Comparing the Commercial Sector with the Catering Service

Comparing the Catering Service with the Commercial Sector There are plenty of similarities and differences between the catering service and the commercial sector for example in the businesses within the catering service like Sodexo do not have opening times and only open/close when the customers/clients need them to; so this is entirely dependant on the event that they are catering for. Whereas in the commercial sector they tend to have specific opening and closing times like Pipers, for example, open at 6pm and close at 9pm. In both sectors they have to have pretty much the same staff such as managers, supervisors, chefs, housekeepers and waiters/waitresses. But in the commercial sector they have more full-time staff and in the catering sector there are more part-time staff such as managers and supervisors. In the catering sector, additional services can usually be included as well such as DJs, music, dance floors and bars whereas this is less likely in the commercial sector as they don’t tend to have as many contacts out of the business. Staff also have certain hours in the commercial sector that they work which is usually 9am-5pm but in the catering sector their working times depends on the event that they are working. Both sectors offer similar products with regards to food and drink but they can also both offer different levels of service for example in the

Private sector businesses.

Private Sector Businesses Sole Traders Sole traders are the smallest type of enterprise. This type of business is owned by one person, although he or she may employ other people to work in the business, he has complete control over the business and takes home all the profits. A sole trader is someone who decides to own and run his or her own business and most probably uses her own saving as capital to start it up. This type of business is easy to set up and there are no formal procedures to follow. Advantages: * If the firm is successful then the owners reward is the profit. * Ideally suited for offering a personal service to customers. * Bad (unpaid) debts can be avoided as the customers are usually known to the owner and most transactions are usually for cash rather than credit. * The sole trader can be flexible as to which days to work and working/opening hours. * Unlimited liability means a lot less paper work because they don't have to pay corporation tax. Disadvantages: * Long working hours. * Illness and sickness can cause problems to the business - when closed it makes no money. * Highly dependant on the skills or ability of one person. * Difficult to raise capital to start up or expand the business. * Unlimited liability can be devastating for a sole trader considering he is the only one the law takes action against (unincorporated). Partnerships A

History of the Turkish Broadcast Sector.

History of the Turkish Broadcast Sector Although Turkey's private broadcast sector has only a background of ten years, it has developed very fast, catching up with the sustained and rapid general progress of this market. Currently Turkey has the second highest number of TV channels in the world, after the United States of America. Today, there are 139 television-broadcasting companies and 1,195 radio stations in Turkey. From the late 1960s to 1990, the government enjoyed a monopoly over Turkish TV broadcasting. After the 1980s, the computer revolution changed the existing technology as the Internet became popular. In the 1990s, this change affected Turkey. The public demanded the quality products and lifestyle they saw in other countries. The "digital" revolution began. Since then, analogue systems have been left aside and perfect digital coding systems have dominated the technology. Broadcasting companies are operating in three different ways: terrestrial, satellite, or cable. Due to security reasons, the permission for digital terrestrial broadcasting has not been given yet, but digital cable and satellite broadcasting started in 2000. All broadcasters are now prepared to invest remarkable amounts into digital technology.
