Every Girl’s Dream.

Every Girl's Dream. Short skirts, tiny waists, large breasts, and flawless airbrushed smiling faces. These are the images of womanhood that I have seen while I have been in America. I see them on the television, on the sides of buses, on billboards, magazines, and everywhere else. And I wonder why so many female adolescents have self-image and weight issues? In a time when individuality, self-esteem and positive body image are all on the decline, plastic idols are the last things young girls need to compare themselves to. Add these limited images of feminine beauty, a little baby pink, blond hair, blue eyes, and what do we have? I would have to guess the beloved plastic childhood toy that smiles out to us in the Pepto-Bismol colored isles at Wal-Mart - Barbie. The proportionately incorrect doll has been blamed for driving some to great lengths to imitate her features, while others have looked everywhere for a "Ken Doll" of their own, but to no avail. Since being in America I have witnessed the preaching of society that features like Barbie's are the epitome of what it means to be beautiful woman. Tiny waists and large breasts were beginning to come out as the image of feminine beauty. Society has unconsciously made women focus their attention on their looks, which in my opinion has turned into a social disease. I think that Barbie was an early

Islam - More Than A Religion.

Islam More Than A Religion Despite its huge following around the world and the growing Muslim communities in the United States, Islam is foreign to most Americans who are familiar with Christianity or Judaism. Because most Americans know little or nothing about Islam, they have many misconceptions about Muslim beliefs and rituals. The negative image many people in the United States and Europe have of Islam and the Muslim world has a long history. Many have judged Islam without making an effort to consider this religious tradition on its own terms, without bothering to become acquainted with its teaching and the ways in which Muslims practice their faith. Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam is a monotheistic religion, based on the belief in one God.. This religion was proclaimed by the Prophet Muhammad in Arabia, in the 7th century A.D. The term Islam virtually means "surrender". Within Islam the believer (called a Muslim) use the Arabic word for God, Allah, to refer to the creator of the world and of all life within it. Allah is viewed as the sole God----creator, sustained, and restorer of the world. The will of Allah, to which man must submit, is made known through the sacred scriptures, the Qur'an (Koran). Allah revealed the Qur'an to his messenger, Muhammad. According to Islamic beliefs, Muhammad is the last of a series of prophets (including Adam, Noah, Jesus, and

The Handmaids Tale

The Handmaids Tale The Handmaid's Tale is a unique story about the oppression felt by the women of a society that has changed dramatically from that which we know today. The novel was written in 1985 and is set in 2000-2005 it tell the story of a society which revolves around women being the sacred vessels for life; ironically in this society women have no rights, or freedoms. Only those who are on the upper scale, (the wives) have power, even so the husbands or commanders control them for the most part. This novel was written by Margaret Atwood and is very futuristic for its time, it symbolizes how many women all over the world and particularly in the Middle East were and still are subjected to oppression. By analyzing the novel one can begin to see the different topics which it is meant to symbolize and what effect the presentation and format these topics are discussed in have on the reader and the novels over all effect. Although there are many characters in the novel only the real personalities of a selected few are revealed. Offerd is the main protagonist and the narrator of the novel, she is a younger woman who has lived through a great deal of change and chaos. Offred survives to make several tapes of her life's journey that serve as the story line for the novel. Offred does not seem to a particularly strong character, however she does endure a lot. She takes what

Health care and Advertising; The problems that arise in the field of Pharmaceuticals.

Health care and Advertising; The problems that arise in the field of Pharmaceuticals Intro Healthcare advertising and marketing is on the rise. Few healthcare providers even had marketing departments in the 1970's. Now, even mainstream providers are investing in their images. Advertising often helps the consumer make choices amid a large number of options. But consumer patient choice is increasingly limited by managed care plans, adding a layer of irony to the spread of direct advertising. In this paper I would like to talk about advertising, specifically in the healthcare field, go over some the problems, and try to find solution to some of the problems in the industry, and try to express my opinions on the matter. What is Advertising Advertising is salesmanship. The only purpose of advertising is to make sales. It can either be profitable or unprofitable. It is any form of non-personal presentation and promotion of goods, ideas, or services by an identified sponsor. Advertising is used for business firms, non-profit organizations, professionals, and social agencies. Major decisions in advertising include objective setting, budget decisions, message, and media decisions, and campaign evaluation. It is a way of promoting products, services, or information. It is a way for business to communicate with consumers in a visual manor. It started in the 17th century with

To what extent does stress cause Cardiovascular Disorders?

Physiological Psychology. To what extent does stress cause Cardiovascular Disorders? A cardiovascular disorder is any disorder effecting the heart and circulatory system. There is evidence that links stress plays a role in the development of two types of cardiovascular disorders, hypertension (high blood pressure) and coronary heart disease (CHD), which reduces the flow of blood to the heart. Stress may directly cause cardiovascular problems by; rising heart rate which wears the lining of the blood vessels, increasing blood pressure which causes too much pressure on the blood vessels resulting in damage, also mounting glucose levels leading to blocked blood vessels. Stress can also have an effect on our lifestyle, we may find that smoking or drinking helps to take away the strain, yet this can have an immense negative effect on our cardiovascular system. Krantz et al (1991) devised a study to look into the extent to which mental stress could be revealed to enlarge the heart condition called Myocardial Ischemia, also for patients suffering coronary artery disease; they looked to see if they reacted in a different way to those without cardiovascular problems. The test involved patients undertaking three mental tasks: arithmetic; a Stroop test; and simulation of public speaking. It was concluded that there is a direct link among performing a mild cognitive task and a

An Infant Baptismal service

R.E. Coursework Baptism My family and I are members of a Presbyterian Church. Nearly all of the baptism services that I have witnessed have been infant baptisms. An Infant Baptismal service This part of the service (in my church) usually occurs just before the children's address. The children don't leave for Sunday school, until after the baptism has been carried out. The minister welcomes the parents and their family to the church. Usually all of the baby's relatives would come to this service, and they have the front few rows reserved for them. The relatives being present is important, as the family is taking vows on behalf of the baby, about the family-thus being the family of the church, or the world wide family of Christians. The minister explains the importance, meaning and the significance of this sacrament: - "This is a sign of god's promises towards those who trust in him. Through baptism a person becomes a member of the church. Baptism is a sign of God's love and special relationship with the church in the New Testament". Two of the baby's relative's normally read appropriate scripture lessons. These will remind us of the covenant that God made with his people in the Old Testament, when he spoke to Abraham. The New Testament readings will make a link between the initial covenant, and the one through Jesus in the New Testament. It is into the New

In What Ways Are The Stories "Your Shoes" and "Flight" Said To Be Similar.

In What Ways Are The Stories "Your Shoes" and "Flight" Said To Be Similar "Flight" and "Your Shoes" are both similar in their own ways. The authors Doris Lessing (from Flight) and Michele Roberts (from Your Shoes) both try to express the idea of the older person seeking to restrain the younger one. It explores the feelings and actions of these people and how they cope with their sorrows. "Your Shoes" is about a mother whose fifteen-year-old daughter has just run away after an argument. "Flight" is about a grandfather who lives alone and is loosing all his grandchildren to their husbands. They both express themselves with things that they find important in their lives. For "Your Shoes" - a pair of shoes, and for "Flight"- a bird. The Grandfather in "Flight" is quite selfish, by not wanting his Granddaughter Alice to get married to her boyfriend. I have evidence supporting this, and you can tell when he says, mourning, " She's the last, can't we keep her a bit longer?" This is quoted from line 90 when he's speaking of his granddaughter to his daughter as if she is some sort of pet or toy. There is selfishness in "Your Shoes" too but interpreted in a different way. The mother in the story talks mostly of the bad childhood she had with her mother instead of worrying about her daughter, e.g., "She loved you more than she loved me. It isn't fair." and "My mother was like you,

Pendulum Lab

IB HL Chemistry (Surface Area and the Period of a Pendulum) Submitted to: Ms. Fronczak Submitted by: Raphael Hanna Date: February 17, 2009 Course: SCH3UC Design Question: How will varying the surface area of the bob affect the period of a pendulum? Independent and Dependant Variables: The surface area of the bob was varied by melting chocolate into different shaped blocks with the same volume. The resulting effect on the period of the pendulum was measured. The independent variable in the experiment was the surface area of the chocolate blocks and the dependant variable was the period of the pendulum. Controlled Variables: The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of surface area on the period of a pendulum. This was does by varying the surface area of several blocks of chocolate and then measuring the period of the pendulum. Several variables however, can alter the results of this experiment. Controlled variables: Pivot point- The type of pivot point could affect how the pendulum swings by increasing the friction and changing the velocity of the pendulum. In this experiment the type of pivot point was kept constant throughout the experiment Length of the string- The length of the string will vary the arc on the pendulum and the period as a result will change. Using a ruler for increased accuracy the string length was kept as consistent as
