The circulatory system.

The circulatory system The circulatory system can be greatly affected by the type and amount of training a person does and therefore has to be considered very closely compared to other body systems. The main functions of the circulatory system are: * Transport- carrying blood, water, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, and transport the removal of waste. * Body temperature control- the blood absorbs the body heat then carries it to the lungs and to the skin, where it is then released. * Protection- it helps to fight disease, e.g. antibodies, which fight infection, are carried in the blood and the clotting of seals cuts and wounds. The circulatory system has four main parts: * The heart * The blood vessels * The blood * The pulmonary and systemic circuits. The heart . The blood enters the right-hand atrium. The blood is deoxygenated. 2. The right atrium pumps this blood into the right ventricle. 3. The right ventricle pumps the blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where oxygen is picked up. 4. The blood then returns to the left atrium through the pulmonary vein. 5. The left atrium pumps the blood into the left ventricle. The blood leaves here through the aorta to be distributed to the rest of the body. From here the blood looses its oxygen because it is used for other bodily functions. The cycle then takes place all over again. Blood vessels

Movement in and out of cells

________________ Movement in and out of cells. ________________ How substances get in and out of cells (Unit 4 page 26) All cells, need food materials salts and water to live. They also, need, to get rid of toxic substances such as carbon dioxide. Substances may pass through the cell membrane either passively, that means without energy requirement by a process called diffusion, or actively, by some form of active transport. Diffusion: The molecules of a gas, a liquid or a dissolved substance moves from a region where there are a lot of them (i.e concentrated) to regions where there are a few of them. (i.e.less concentrated) until the concentration everywhere is the same. Whether this movement will happen or not depends on whether the cell membrane will let the molecules through. Small molecules such as water, carbon dioxide and oxygen pass through the membrane by diffusion. So diffusion tends to equalize the concentration of these molecules inside and outside the cell all the time. Many processes involve diffusion. Some of them include aerobic respiration and tissue respiration. Rates of diffusion: The speed with which a substance diffuses will depend on the following factors: a) temperature, b) pressure, c) distance it has to diffuse, d) it`s concentration at both sides d) size of the molecules or ions involved. e) Surfaced area So: The thicker the wall

Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing- How Does Shakespeare Present Difficulties In Relationships In Much Ado About Nothing? 'Much Ado About Nothing' was written in 1600 by William Shakespeare. The play is set in Messina, Sicily however it shows typical English comedy characteristics for that time. I find this unusual because not many people travelled far from home. Relationships are shown in various ways throughout the play using themes such as love, romance and patriarchal society. The main relationships which are portrayed are between Hero and Claudio and Beatrice and Benedick. Act two scene one is the masked ball. Conversations take place between a number of couples; this makes the scene seem lively and gives a sense of movement. The character Beatrice is attracted to Benedick. However Shakespeare confuses the audience by having Beatrice pass insults to Benedick, "masking" her real feelings. Beatrice says to Benedick "why he is the Prince's jester, a very dull fool; only his gift is in devising impossible slanders". Beatrice is teasing Benedick so that her real feelings towards him are concealed. Don John appears to deliberately try to cause problems in the relationship between Hero and Claudio by claiming "how canst thou cross this marriage?" Don John is showing his distaste for the marriage his brother arranged. This is because Don John is jealous of his brother's higher status

Many people in the society are not very familiar with mental health problems. Although, research has shown that about 50 years ago, people would class people with mental health problems and would say they had a 'demon' was inside of them and possessed them.

stand by me

Ayesha Begum English Analyse The Narrative Techniques In Stand By Me The first narrative technique is camera angles, and the first camera shot they use is an extreme long shot in the beginning of the film where they show the countryside, a small jeep and some trees in the scene. This scene makes me wonder where the car is going and why they are showing the jeep. The place is lovely but it looks lonely and the car is the only thing moving in the scene so it shows that the person in the jeep wants some time to himself/herself to think over things and get a bit of peace. You can see a lot of background in the scene I think this is so that the audience knows where the film is set in the beginning and so that the audience knows that the person driving the jeep wants some time to himself/herself. The next shot they use is a long shot because they show the whole jeep and a bit of the background around the jeep. You can see a man sitting in the jeep all alone and it seems like he is upset over something, because this is the first person we see it shows us that he probably is a key character in the movie. The next shot is a close up shot because it shows the whole face of the man in more detail and you can tell that by seeing his expressions he is really sad or something bad has happened and he is upset over it. It looks like he is remembering something from his past - he looks

Symbolism in The Great Gatsby.

Symbolism in The Great Gatsby By 1925, author F. Scott Fitzgerald was known primarily as the historian of the Jazz Age and chronicler in slick American weeklies of the American flapper. Perhaps this is why critics and reviewers were caught off-guard in that year, at the height of the Roaring Twenties, when Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby, a story cited today as the Great American Novel. It is true, as Magnum Bryant says, "The simple romance of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan is merely the foundation for a narrative structure that accommodates Fitzgerald's ideas about irreconcilable contradictions within the American Dream and ultimately about the ideal quest itself"(Byrant n.pg.). The intricate weaving of the various stories within The Great Gatsby is accomplished through a complex symbolic substructure of the narrative. The primary images and symbols that Fitzgerald employs in developing the theme of The Great Gatsby are the green light, the Valley of Ashes, and the overlooking eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. The green light at the end of Daisy Buchanan's dock is the first use of one of the novel's central symbols. The initial appearance of the green light occurs when the narrator, Nick Caraway, sees Gatsby standing in front of his mansion, stretching out "his arms toward the dark water in a curious way" (Fitzgerald 26; ch. 1). From his own house Nick believes that he can

OF MICE AND MEN

Alex Mayne-Nicholls How effectively has Steinbeck created tension during the incident with Candy's dog? The killing of Candy's dog in Steinbeck's novel "Of mice and men" is a very important incident. The author makes this scene very tense using different techniques. Everything starts because Slim considers the dog is useless and has a bad smell. "He ain't no good" (p70). And as he just got five puppies he believes Candy could make good use of one of those. Candy, very nervous and doubtful, finally accepts that killing his dog, which has been with him for a very long time, will be the best to do. Even though he knows that he will miss him. Carlson, described as "thick bodied" (p70), goes out of the ranch and kills the dog. These moments in the ranch are of absolute silence, and nobody is able to break this silence. "Silence fell" (p75). Time seems to pass very slowly; every sound scares everyone, until we can finally hear a shot from outside. The poor old dog was killed, we knew he should die, but didn't want it to happen. After this death, everything came back to normality in the ranch, or the men were at least talking to each other again. In these pages, Steinbeck uses different techniques to achieve tension and time passing slowly. Time passing slowly can be shown when he starts sentences with a conjunction. "And slim ..." (p74). "And the silence ... " (p75). This

Of Mice And Men

Of Mice And Men John Steinbeck uses animal imagery to express and introduce characters, events and themes in 'Of Mice and Men.' Steinbeck also uses nature, to convey events and settings in a subtle way. In section one of 'Of mice and Men' Steinbeck uses various colours to help the reader visualise the clearing as a tranquil and peaceful place. By describing the Salinas River as 'deep and green' the reader instantly envisages the water to be refreshing, mysterious and untouched. In addition, Steinbeck suggests that the clearing is full of sunlight: 'The water is warm too, for it slipped twinkling over the yellow sands.' Yellow, in this context, is calming because the words 'warm' and 'twinkling' are used before it. Steinbeck also uses alliteration to create a calm and peaceful atmosphere: 'south of Soledad, the Salinas River.' The repetition on the soft's' sound is calming and subtle. Steinbeck repeats this technique: 'the water is warm too.' As with the's' sound, the soft 'w' is calming. In this setting of absolute calm and serenity, Lennie and George are introduced. Steinbeck uses extensive animal imagery to describe Lennie: 'dragging his feet in the way a bear drags his paws.' This gives the impression that Lennie is large and cumbersome. However, the main reason that Steinbeck uses this form of imagery in describing Lennie is to portray him as amoral and therefore

Of Mice and Men Essay

Of Mice and Men Tone Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is a novel of several moods, however, the dominant tone of this novel is that of heartrending. This mood is developed through the unconquered dreams of the main characters. There are also other moods evoked through the actions of the characters: reflecting sorrow, shame, and brutality. The novel ends on a tragic note, consequently, the concluding mood is undeniably one of depression and frustration. Following, are two paragraphs that will confirm why this novel is heartrending. One of the most excruciating passages occurs on page 63, when Curley's intimidating behavior provoked Lennie to commit an act that he was so desperately trying to avoid, "Blood welled from his nose. 'George,' he cried. 'Make um' leave me alone, George.' He backed until he was against the wall, and Curley followed, slugging him in the face. Lennie's hands remained at his sides; he was too frightened to defend himself." In that passage, it states that "he was too frightened to defend himself," the word "frightened" really disturbed me and played a immense part on why this passage made me experience a depressing feeling. I myself began to become apprehensive; terrified that George will physically and emotionally hurt Lennie, leaving him in an intense condition. By definition, frightened means "to fill with fear," and Lennie, a huge,
