Evaluate how Thorpe Park should develop its products and services in the future, given the tough competition.
Business Studies Coursework - Title: Evaluate how Thorpe Park should develop its products and services in the future, given the tough competition.
AIM
The aim of this assignment is to evaluate the products and services of Thorpe Park. I will complete this by surveying their use of marketing on their services by collecting a mixture of primary and secondary data. I will use the following methods to obtain my primary data: questionnaires, seminar talks and experience the park myself. I will gain secondary information from the internet and newspapers.
After collecting the information, I will then analyse and interpret it and, if necessary will recommend a scheme for improving their marketing regime.
Background
Thorpe Park, located in Surrey, England, was opened in 1979. It originally was design to be a water park; however from the mid 1980's the owners changed their business strategies and decided to compete in the leisure industry as a Theme Park. An example of this is the change of rides: from the 'Model World' of the 80's to the new 'Nemesis Inferno'.
Thorpe Park is currently one of the largest Theme parks in Europe and arguably the best in the country. It operates in a massive 500 acre plot and on a good day, can make a profit turnover of nearly £500,000.
In 1998 Thorpe Park was bought by the Tussards Group, one of Europe's largest operators and developers of visitor attractions. The Tussards Group's strategy is to develop a range of successful visitor attractions that are special, imaginative and exceptional visitor value. Thorpe Park is own by the group alongside other major attractions in the country such as Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures and The Madame Tussards waxworks. Since the early 1990's Thorpe Park changed its target market from family to 18-24 year olds. We can obviously see this because of the increase in the exhilarating rides. A range of rides at the park are at the start of their 'product lifecycle' such as 'Colossus' and 'tidal wave' however some are nearing the end, e.g. 'Thunder Rapids.
