Educating Rita

In the play, Educating Rita, Willy Russell creates humour in a number of different ways. I will refer to the humour in scenes 1 and 6. In scene one, I found a variety of humorous moments enjoyed by both Frank and Rita. The first comical episode I came across was, "Look if you're trying to induce some feeling of guilt on me over the prospect of a burnt dinner you should have prepared something other than lamb and ratatouille... because, darling, I like my lamb done to the point of abuse and even I know that ratatouille cannot be burned. ... Darling, you could incinerate ratatouille and still it wouldn't burn." In this paragraph, I found the text to be quite sarcastic, but yet serious, which made it funny. It's not only what Frank says; the humour also relies on how you can imagine him saying it. The author creates the humour in his characters by bringing parts of normal people into the story, and reflecting it on their everyday life. An example of this is at the end of Frank's phone call to Julia, when he says, "What do you mean am I determined to go to the pub? I don't need determination to get me into a pub..." I have used this quotation because it's something a typical man would say to his wife or girlfriend. In act 1, scene 1, a conversation takes place between Frank and Rita within the first 15 minutes of encountering each other. They are discussing an erotic

Many critics agree that there is a dramatic transformation in the Russell's Protagonist, Educating Rita. Rita has many parallels with the author Willy Russell. Both Russell and Rita had the same job as a women's hairdresser and then realize that there is more to life than just new clothes and decide that an education would give them 'choice'. So they both studied literature to get a better education. Russell reveals the changes Rita undergoes through his stage directions, Rita's language throughout the play and her body language. In the beginning of the play, we see Frank in 'control. This is shown by Rita's respect and admiration for him, she refers to his room as "a perfect mess," (Act 1 Scene 2). This shows that Rita sees Frank's room as being a symbol of middle class unpretentiousness. To Rita it seems that Frank is too busy to clean up. However her statement is biased as Frank is from the middle class and Rita sees the middle class as being superior to her as she is of the working class. Rita also shows her admiration for Frank by saying " an' I like you" (Act 1 scene 1). She has just met him but Rita grows to admire Frank very quickly, and refuses to change tutors. This shows that Rita looks up to Frank in the early scenes, and appreciates him for who he is. Rita also says, "if I'd got some other tutor I wouldn't have stayed," (Act 1 scene1) Rita's admiration for

Educating Rita

Educating Rita Educating Rita is a short play that revolves around a young middle class woman (Rita) who is driven by a hunger to better herself and climb the harsh ladder of society through education and knowledge. Set in Liverpool 1985, during a time of high unemployment rates, economic depression and severe class divisions, the play deals with the idea of change in both negative and positive ways, but also boldly confronts the delicate issues of social class and education. There are two major themes in the play, both of which equally as important, the first of the two is the domineering clash of culture that is present so significantly throughout a major part of the play. Although there are several references to other characters in the play, Frank (Rita's tutor) and Rita herself are the only characters the audience encounters directly, and through them, their attitudes and language doe's the theme of clashing cultures emerge. The second is personal relationships, which is invoked by frank and Rita's influence on each other and the way in which they affect each other's development throughout the play. Willy Russell (author of educating Rita), was born in Liverpool forty years before the setting of the play, belonging to a better-off working class family, Russell failed and dropped out of school becoming a ladies hair dresser for six years, he then later quit his job and

Chelia Batkin Act 1 Scene 7 is very important. Comment on how and why the audience's view of Rita changes at this point. This scene demonstrates several important decisions that Rita must make to change her future. Having momentarily been tempted to go back to her old ways, Rita resists and finds her self trapped between two classes in society making her now more than ever determined to change. This scene also shows how Rita makes herself cope when important relationships in her life come under strain. Rita, as assumed for her class and upbringing, failed to pay attention during her time at school. She refers to her school life as: ' Just normal,' and ' Boring.' Many of the influences of her friends and family determined her future, making Rita's choices and opinions sculpted by society, and the people she grew up with. She talks about how she would have been seen as a ' wimp ' for wanting to study and learn. When Rita speaks to Frank about her youth and school life, she is constantly displaying to us her need to please the people around her: Doing as was expected, choosing the ' Real qualities ' in life. Through out the play and verified in this particular scene, is the gradual relationship break down between Rita and her husband Denny: Rita is not given the support she deserves and needs form her husband. He is completely against her decision to ' find ' herself. Denny

GCSE Coursework- Educating Rita How does Willy Russell present the development of Frank and of Rita in 'Educating Rita?' In my essay I shall write an analysis to show how Willy Russell develops the characters of Frank and of Rita in his play 'Educating Rita'. This play is a 20th Century play and was set in the 1980's. This is important as we can see the language at this time in the 1980's. I will look at how the writer, Willy Russell, uses language, how he shows the development of the characters Frank and Rita and then show evidence using quotations. I will have to look at how both of the characters have change throughout the play, from when they meet each other till when they part ways at the end of the play. I will look at what each character wanted and whether they have developed according to that and how other characters in the play may view their change throughout the play. For example Frank and Rita may think they have got what they wanted but Denny may think that Rita has not developed or changed for the better. Firstly I will start by telling you about what the characters are like. Rita is an uneducated working housewife, stuck in a world her husband and family won't let her escape from. She is unhappy unsure of herself and wants to be educated like other students. She wants to fit in, and become more confident in herself and mainly she wants to find

Educating Rita

Educating Rita The title of the play 'Educating Rita' refers to a woman called Rita who decides to enrol on a literature course at an open university. Rita is a working class, 26-year-old hairdresser. She has a husband called Denny who disapproves of Rita's decision of enrolling on a course at the Open University, as he is worried she is going to turn into a different, more educated woman. The play is set in the 1980's. Which means that because Rita is working class she has to break away from the restrictions, which are imposed, on her by her husband Denny and the community she lives in. In act 1 scene 1 the stage directions are about 1 and a half pages long and they give us a clue to the type of person Frank is. " A room on the first floor of a Victorian-built university" This is the opening line to the play and is the very first stage direction. This tells us that frank works in a university. "Another desk CENTER covered with various papers and books" This stage direction tells us that Frank is a lecturer of some sort. Just from reading the stage directions at the beginning of the play you get a general idea about Frank. They tell us that Frank is a lecturer of some sort at a university, in the north of England. He is in his early fifties and likes to have a drink. When Frank is talking to his partner Julia on the phone we start to develop our impressions of him. We

Kamran Ikram, English coursework 2. Do you think it is right to call Educating Rita a serious comedy? In 'Educating Rita,' Willy Russell manages to entertain the audience by using humour in a variety of "serious" mannerisms, often in ways which many may not understand, and at other times in ways that can be understood even by the simplest of minds. One of the very first examples of humour in the play is represented by the increasing impatience of Frank when telling Rita to "Come in!" Amusingly, Rita continues to knock because the handle of the door to Frank's office is broken. Rita, having finally gained entrance bursts in and much to the shock of Frank shouts "...one of these days you'll be shoutin' "Come in" an' it'll go on forever because the poor sod on the other side wont be able to get in. An' you wont be able to get out" This, in actual fact is fairly serious, despite being hugely comical at the same time, as Frank is having a serious conversation with what seems to be his alcohol supplier whilst Rita is shouting on the other side of the door. It also helps us to understand Rita as she is in "purest form".Moreover, this is also serious, in that by highlighting Rita's loud and crude character, we are able to make out a difference in her level of maturity, and measure how much she is progressing in her quest for education further on in the play, where she calms down,

Discuss the Success of this Introduction to the Play's Characters and themes. Do you think Willy Russell has successfully made his opening Dramatic and Entertaining? I think that Willy Russell has made the introduction of the play, Educating Rita, dramatic and entertaining because he uses techniques such as: * Just two characters * Set in just one room * Humour * Similarities between Rita and Frank - both read books, and smoke etc. * Similarities between Rita and Willy Russell - both from Liverpool, both hairdressers and from working class backgrounds. Educating Rita is a stage comedy written by Willy Russell which premièred at The Warehouse, London, in 1980. The two characters are: Frank - an unsuccessful, upper class man who is in his fifties, writes poems and is a university lecturer. He is tired and jaded and has not looked out of his large bay window or looked at his nude, religious picture for about ten years. Frank is an alchoholic who pulls out a book at the beginning of the play and behind it appears a bottle of whisky. He then pours a large slug into a mug. He only works so he can buy more drink. Rita - A young 26 year old, working-class hairdresser, who is loud, inquisitive and uses lots of slang - "I'm comin' in, aren't I? It's that stupid bleedin' handle on the door. You wanna get it fixed!" This is the first time Rita speaks and she doesn't

EDUCATING RITA The play is in a naturalistic setting. The whole play takes place inside one room, namely Frank's office; a book-lined study in a university in northern England. And by adhering to the unity of place Willy Russell is not just able to concentrate on the drama, but also the humour of the play. The play is set in year it was written, 1985. The play itself is structured into two Acts. The first act deals with Rita beginning her search and her education, trying desperately to fit into Frank's world. Frank is the teacher, the one with all the knowledge. He's always saying the right words. Rita looks up to Frank. Whereas on the other hand you have his opposite, Rita, who is uneducated, loud, out spoken and common. Rita breezes into Frank's life like a breath of fresh air. The story of the play is that of the developing and changing relationship between the two of them both as teacher and student and also on a more personal level. During the play the character of Rita is completely transformed. And this needs to be shown through the way the actors play their characters and the way they interact on the stage. In the beginning she struggles greatly with her language skills, only managing to develop the necessary skills after her success at the summer school, to succeed in the second act. As the first act experiences the breakdown of Rita's marriage with Denny; the
