Data Handling Coursework

Introduction

I have been given data about pupils from Mayfield (a fictitious high school). I have been given data about years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. The information included in the data sheet is eye colour, IQ, heights, etc. I have chosen 2 aspects, height and weight. I want to investigate the relationship between height and weight. I will look at the heights and weights of years 7 and 11 as they have the biggest gap in age.

Hypothesis

My hypotheses are:

Hypothesis 1 – Taller you are then heavier you weigh.

Hypothesis 2 – Year 7 boys are lighter than year 11 girls because year 7 boys are smaller.

Hypothesis 3 – The spread of year 7 boy’s heights are larger than the spread of year 7 girl’s heights.

Planning

I am going to use scatter diagrams to investigate taller you are then heavier you weigh. I am going use stem and leaf diagram and from them I am going to use box plots to investigate that if year 7 boys are lighter than year 11 girls. I am going use stem and leaf diagram and from them I am going to use box plots to find the interquartile range to investigate that if the spread of year 7 boys heights are larger than the spread of year 7 girls heights.

Data Collection

I need to collect data to follow up my investigation. I will use years 7 and 11 pupils from Mayfield School because they have the biggest gap in age. I will only pick out the heights and weight because this is the only information required. I am going to pick samples to investigate my hypotheses. I will not pick every pupil’s height and weight because there would be too many. I am going to pick 60 samples as 60 is a good number as it splits into 4 groups easily. This is good as I have 4 groups which need investigating and 15 is a good number to find out lower quartile, upper quartile, etc. I will not pick the first 15 pupils on the data sheet as they could all be short as the data is in alphabetical order and also if the first 15 pupils were erroneous number, such as if all the year 7 boys heights were around 1.40-1.70 and then I got a erroneous number such as 1.92 it would ruin my investigation.

To find out my 60 samples I am going to use random sampling, I will do this using my calculator to pick out random numbers. To do this I will put the number of people in a year and then press the ‘Ran #’ key, this will pick a random number. I would then look on the data sheet and pick the height and weight of the number chosen. Some problems might occur when randomly sampling as if I was to get 15 year 7 boys and the random number came up twice, the number was erroneous or if I ...
