Commentary on extract from 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" by Lord Byron
Childe Harold's Pilgrimage This extract form the poem 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage' by Lord Byron expresses the spiritual journey that the character Childe Harold is going through, and how the beauty of nature is spoiled. In this extract the character is reflecting on the raw beauty of nature, and on the destructive behavior of humans on nature. Through this poem the emotions and the tone change from meditative to powerful and angry. These changes are revealed through diction, imagery, and the structure. The vivid imagery created by Lord Byron through the poem helps the readers to experience a dramatic picture full of emotions and feelings that the character developed through out the poem. In the first stanza the poet describes the raw beauty of nature, such as 'deep sea', 'music in its roar'. This description in the introductive stanza helps to create the lonely meditative mood that the character is going through in his spiritual journey. As the emotions evolve into stronger and angrier emotions the images become more aggressive and powerful, setting this change is the first line in the second stanza as Harold addresses the 'deep', 'dark blue' ocean. The line 'A shadow of a man's ravage' helps the readers to imagine the man as evil and vile. Using the simile 'like a drop of water' to compare the size of the man to the ocean's size shows how insignificant humans are to
Compare and Contrast Characters and Presentation of Fiela Komoetie and Barta Van Rooyen
Compare and Contrast Characters and Presentation of Fiela Komoetie and Barta Van Rooyen. Although Dalene Matthee's novel is set up at the turn of the twentieth century in a predominantly male South Africa, two of the most notable female characters of the novel stand out from amongst the others due to their impact on the development of the central events. I am today going to concentrate on the representation of Fiela Komoetie and Barta Van Rooyen, who appear to exist in different worlds with their own roles and status in the respective families. These two female figures play an eminent role in the life of the main protagonist of the novel, Benjamin Komoetie and undoubtedly affect the utter existence of the two families. The Komoetie family, based in the dry climate of the Wolwekraal represent the poor class of the South African society which is predominantly black. The family belongs to those who have to work hard for their money on the arid land that they inhabit. In the Komoetie family, Fiela Apoools, which is her maiden name, acts as the head of the family taking control over the daily routines that the family goes through. Although she is the female figure in the family, she clearly possesses more authority over her male counterpart, Selling, who is no able to do hard work due to his physical ailments. Fiela often uses her authority to force other members of the

Part 2- Non-fiction work
Summary of "An Angel at My Table" "An Angel at My Table" is the second volume of the autobiography out of the trilogy by Janet Frame (1924-2004). The plot of the story was set in several parts of New Zealand, especially in Dunedin, Oamaru and Willowglen. However, the character was not in one place but moved from place to place. In this volume, there is emphasis on Frame's passion for literature and her role in her family, mentality as a student and the success of becoming a writer. She was born on August 28, 1928, to Lottie and George Frame in Dunedin on the east coast of South Island and was the third of five children. Her father was a poor railway engineer and her mother's family (known as the Godfrey's) were established in Picton. She was brought up in Oamaru which was on the eastern coast of South Island. Her brother, George (known as Bruddie in the autobiography), was affected by epilepsy and two of her sisters, Myrtle and Isabel died at a young age by drowning which were separate accidents in 1937 and 1947. These traumatic events distressed Frame that turned out as the consequences in her life and left traces of them in her writing. The story starts when Janet Frame moves in with her Aunty Isy and Uncle George in Number Four Garden Terrace in Dunedin after living in Oamaru in Fifty-Six Eden Street. There she began training as a teacher at the Dunedin Teachers'
Characteristics in the Heart of the Matter
Characteristics in "The Heart of the Matter" In book two, part one, chapter one to five, page 99 - 121. In this part we get to see some new characters but none of them are described in details, except for a few. In chapter two, the survivors of the ship, which came to a mechanical failure in the middle of the sea, arrive on the shore. All of the survivors are exhausted and in terrible state as they have been out there in the sea for two months. I will just quickly go through the survivors who come up one by one. The first survivor, who comes to the shore, introduces himself as Mr. Loder, and he is the chief engineer. He reports that since the captain is dead, it's his responsibility now to make the report explaining the incidence. The next survivors to come up are two elderly men, called Forbes and Newall, who look like plumbers by appearance. One has his foot injured, while the other has his hand injured. After them is a stalwart grey-headed woman whose name is Miss Malcott. She seems to be really worried and in a hurry. She refuses to see the doctor and wants to go to Lagos, to the educational department, as soon as possible, where i think she has got a job. Then, the French officer comes up, his English is not good but he sounds like a friendly person. While Scobie is talking to him, another survivor passes by on a stretcher, who is a small boy of about ten years
Commentary on "Anthem for Doomed Youth"
Commentary on "Anthem for Doomed Youth" "Anthem for Doomed Youth" by Wilfred Owen aims to expose the horrors of war, and its effect on the lives of those involved. The author attempts to reflect the experiences of the soldiers, a community that he himself belongs to. As Owen notes in the introductory remarks, his poems are on the pity of war, and this poem sets out to examine the actualities of life on the front. He also draws comparison with the life outside the trenches, referring to religion that he describes as impotent in response to the horrors of the war. The author does this through diction and series of images that aim to create a visual and acoustic representation of the two worlds. The title of instantaneously draws the attention of the reader, which sets out the tone of the poem. The use of the musical item, performed at large processions, "anthem" can have two meanings. First of all, it resembles a song performed at a mass gathering possibly with a religious connotation, but also an appropriate musical background for a march, with the destination, death, revealed in the title itself. The "doomed" youth describes the situation that the soldiers are, and how inevitable their deaths are. Interestingly enough Owen, at first used the word "dead" instead of "doomed", implying that not only they are ill-fated, but they are, in fact, already dead. The use of the phrase
