Thesis:        Some people believed that the Roman Empire would last forever.  However, it

eventually deteriorated because of military decay.  The Roman Military decayed because of over spending, military anarchy, the use of foreign troops, and a drop in the dedication of soldiers to the Empire.

  1. After Marcus Aurelius death, effective leadership in governing Rome was lacking
  1. Roman Emperor was the backbone of Roman stability.
  2. Roman army was crucial in ensuring the empire's stability.
  1. Military Spending.
  1. Maintaining an army was too expensive.
  2. Military spending left few resources for other activities.
  1. This frustrated Romans, which made them lose their desire to defend the empire.
  2. Emperors had to raise taxes frequently to maintain an army.
  3. Tax led to people to flee Rome, which affected the Roman army.
  1. Roman Empire was plunged into military anarchy.
  1. Romans became too dependent on outsiders fighting in their armies and ruling over them.
  2. Romans came to rest too heavily on their technology and not enough on what had kept them powerful.
  1. Roman Empire's elite.
  1. German units did not easily fall to the traditional Roman discipline and command.
  2. Loss of tactical supremacy destroyed the elite.

  1. Caused terrible financial burdens on the Empire.
  2. Rome went bankrupt and citizens withdrew their loyalty from Rome.

  1. People were granted citizenship, which made citizenship no longer necessary for enlistment.
  1. This led to the Roman army to deteriorate because no one wanted to serve in the army.
  1. Roman army became unorganized and useless.
  2. The Roman army became desperate and came to be composed of lowlife from uncivilized backgrounds and barbarians.

  1. Barbarians attack led to the fall of the Roman military.
  2. Emperors were afraid of their own troops of possible rebellion against them.
  3. Character change in the Roman soldiers, due to the lack of loyalty and honor toward the emperor.

  1. Romans were buying too much and the Roman army was not bringing any money from other lands.
  2. Inflation aroused.
  3. Rome used up a lot of money for the military to protect their empire.
  1. Many soldiers died in battles, causing the army to lose a lot of soldiers.
  1. Rome had to recruit from the citizens.
  2. Most of the soldiers were mercenaries.
  3. Soldiers did not fight with pride.
  1. Conclusion.
  1. Rome was violated internally by the emperors and their soldiers and externally by the barbarous tribes.
  2. Lack of Roman loyalty led to the Roman army to deteriorate.
  3. Rome hurt itself.

Why did the Roman Army Deteriorate?

        The Roman Empire stood in great power for many centuries.  Rome was considered the center of civilization for years.  The empire was beautiful and although it attracted many invaders, it was very well protected by the walls surrounding the empire and, of course, the powerful army.  Some people believed that the Roman Empire would last forever.  However, it eventually deteriorated because of military decay.  The Roman Military decayed because of over spending, military anarchy, the use of foreign troops, and a drop in the dedication of soldiers to the empire.

        When Marcus Aurelius installed the adoptive system, Rome became most powerful.  However, the system was never reinstalled after his death, causing effective leadership in governing Rome to be lacking.  The Roman Emperor was the backbone of Roman stability and therefore the strength of the Roman army was crucial in ensuring the empire's stability.  This stability was drastically altered when corruption and military decay began.

        During the Pax Romana period, the Roman soldier used his superior organization and training to conquer nations.  He was extremely disciplined and professional.  He and his army were literally the wall that protected Rome.  Their fighting ...
