Examine the way in which the culture and expectations of a society influence the lives of an individual in at least 3 stories.

These three stories that I have selected show the way that society, culture and expectations influence an individuals life. They were all written in about the same time period. The authors of each one had very different styles that produce different atmospheres for the stories. Each story has a different atmosphere and plot, which do show how the individual is being affected by their culture.

Vendetta

These are the most important themes in the story Vendetta:

Vengeance; Infliction of punishment in return for a wrong committed; retribution Loyalty; A feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection

The story is mainly about these two themes above. Other important themes in the story: family values, duty, loss and tradition. The story is set in Italy near the coast of Sardinia. In Italy men and women, but mainly men, have a lot of pride and will not let anyone make them look like a fool. They have a lot of pride in their family and believe strongly in vengeance that hurt them.

The author of this story is famous for horror stories. This is a very bloody and vividly described story about the way the dog ‘savagely’ tares at the flesh and black pudding.

The story is very violent and angry. The writer has created a quite fierce atmosphere of the story by using words and phrases that describe very vividly what the actual event looks like, how the dog is attacking the prey. It is a very effective way to describe and portray what the woman is feeling and thinking. It shows the theme of vengeance very well because of all the anger portrayed by the author.

When the widow of Paolo Saverini lost her son she made a promise to him to avenge his death. She swore she would not rest and let herself end her life before she has revenge. She swore upon her sons’ mutilated dead body lying before her. She was an old woman and her son was all she had left. She was going to defend her pride not matter what.

The main character in the story is a woman. She is a widow who wants revenge on the death of her son. In her culture women are not superior to men. She disguises herself as a man when she goes across the sea to the island where the murderer lived, because she would get across easier and with less questioning. She is a woman so has a sense of duty for her family, so to keep her promise.

Vengeance fits into the story as an important theme because it is the main thing that determines how the woman reacts. The widow feels a sense of taking vengeance on the man who killed her son. All the actions taken by the widow and her dog are due to vengeance. It leads the woman to behave and think differently. In Italian culture the women have high expectations to look after their families and to be loyal to them.

The culture and expectations in the story influences the lives of the main individuals by making them behave in specific ways ...
