I would like to put international management in the first part. Firstly, talking about international labor relations is necessary, because different country has different culture. Get to know the hobbits of local people are good for your business, besides think over the benefit of labor also is a good idea. Let’s see this example. In late March 1984, E1 A1 which is the national airline of the state of Israel suffered a horrible strike. This strike was last for six months. Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Worked (IAM) negotiated with the management of E1 A1 Israel Airline, but this negotiation had reached an impasses. The deadlock was failed to be broken by the National Mediation Service. Then the strike began in Jul. 10, 1984. The E1 A1 gave a contract for the strikers. The company let employees to vote on to issues. One is accept or reject the firm’s proposal. The other is whether or not to strike. Obviously, employees were not satisfied with the contract. There are 89% of union members voted to go on strike. Finally, the company gave in. they changed the way to treat the employees, for example agree to a three-year freeze in hourly wages. From this example we can say have a good skill to handle the relationship with labor relations is very important. If in different country, we need to pay more attention to the culture. (Preble, 1996, p.380).secondly, international manufacturing management should be mentioned. In recent years G. H Manoocheri said “we have rediscovered the importance of role the manufacturing function can play in the success of a firm. Consequently, the manufacturing function is viewed as a competitive weapon.” (1996, p.388).that means noticing the changing of manufacturing function is very important. As an international business man, we should know that new opportunities as well as major threats. So, use professional marketing management to access to foreign markets and resources overseas. Let’s put the American experience as an example. “In the decades following World War Ⅱ,in some industries, such as steel and auto, it has lost its industrial and technological leadership.”(Manoocheri, 1996, p388).94% of computer sold in United States in 1970, but only 66% in 1980.later, in 1990s, the problems could be reviewed. The U.S. has started to see and rediscover manufacturing’s importance. They adjusted the policy by government. Then The U.S. becomes the more competitive in the world. We can compare country to business man. International marketing management is following. When we are doing a business, we need to ask ourselves where we can sell the products and services and what the potential benefits are. Things like that. We need to consider environment of international marketing, political factors, economic factors and cultural factors. Let’s talk about environment of International Marketing first. Nowadays, most world trade takes place between the developed markers of North America, Europe and Japan. But the developing countries in Asia also occupy an important part.(Manoocheri, 1996, p.432). So as a business man, he or she should know how to learn about the environment of International Marketing. Political factors change usually. It depends on the relationship between countries, so it is a good Idea to concern about that before you make a international trade. Economic factors and Cultural factors also should be cared about them. Otherwise you may lose your money during the trade.
After we finish talking about international management, we are going to analyze Interpersonal skills.
We need to communicate with our clients during our business no matter it is international trade or domestic business. Now we only talk about international trade. There are often some barriers are created from meeting someone who comes from another culture. Communication barriers interfere with effective communication. An example of this trouble is head nod. The nod in America means understanding, but the nod in Japan means listening.(Chaney&Martin ,2007,p.12). Therefore if we want to learn good communication skills, we need to avoid the barriers. Such as cultural barrier, experiential barrier, and physical barrier.( Chaney&Martin ,2007,p.12). Cultural barriers can be religious or social differences. Before you communicate with other nationalities people, make sure you learn about and respect others religious and social custom. Beside Experiential barriers also can make you confuse. People could have no idea of thing they don’t experience before. When someone talks about one thing which you don’t know, you can not talk about your opinions. In addition, Physical barriers also are big problems. For example the first floor in Britain and in America is different. In Britain, first floor means the ground floor in America. What I am trying to say is getting known your clients’ background is very important. Another point in Interpersonal skills is negotiation skills. There are lots of negotiations during international trade. A succeed international business man should have good negotiation skills. Negotiation skills should not only learn from books but also learn from people. Negotiation skills are practical. You need to practise it usually. Learning psychological skills help you a lot. Last but not least. Linguistic skills, language are the most basic thing. Everything is built upon language. If you don not understand each other. Firstly, learn a second language which you think you probably use in your international trade. Make sure you can handle it very well. You should be independent. Do not want someone could do it for you. It is your own business. Also you need to know about that different people have different accent. Pay attention to it. It would help you to understand your clients. Before I put out my second point, I would like to show that “international English is English for businesspeople who either deal with other culture whose native language English or for whom English may be second language.”(Chaney&Martin ,2007, p.139).it is better focus on most common words. Especially, words in your business field.
To sum up, I think a good business man should master international management which is included international labor relations, international marketing management and international manufacturing management. Also need to be good at communication skills and negotiation skills which I call them interpersonal skills. Finally, you need to handle the problems of languages. International trade is complex. You need to spend your time in analyzing it. Usually good international businesses man also good domestic business man. So it is a good idea to improve you ability in your own country first. Remember that things always changes so different situation different solution.
