How did Shakespeare create tension in act 1 scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet ? Romeo has just gate crashed on the Capulet party and no one knows that he is at the party and if he is found by the Capulet he will most likely be killed because of Romeo being a Montague this because earlier in the play the Montague's and Capulet have a fight. Romeo see Juliet and say "snowy dove trooping with crows" (act 1 scene 5) this tells us that romeo thinks that Juliet stands out from every other person. Tybalt hear Romeos voice and he know romeo is not meant to be at the Capulet party. Tybalt wants romeo gone but lord capulet stops him and tells him off "why, how now, kinsman, wherefore storm you so?..."(act 1 scene 5) he holed this against romeo and wants retribution and calls romeo a "villain" (act 1 scene 5) this time this was a very offensive word to be called. While tension increases romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love the share kisses and proclaim there feelings for each other and how ever they do not realise that they are sworn enemies. Hello Film Weekly fans and in today's 100th issue the main topic will be to compare the two 'Rome and Juliet' Films. The first one was directed by Franco Zeffirelli in1968 and the most recent version in 1997 by Baz Luhrmann. I will be comparing the opening scene (including the prologue) up to the end of the first fight between the two families. As you watch scene 1 in each film you will see the obvious differences in the ways that both approach the prologue n different ways, they seem to be intended for different audiences and the setting, i.e. Verona and Verona beach and time set one in medieval times the other in modern day times. Luhrmann and Zeffirelli use very opposite effects and techniques in each of the Romeo and Juliet films. The contrasts between the Zeffirelli 1968 and the Luhrmann 1997 versions are vast. Examine the impressions created by the opening scenes Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet" and analyse how this is done. Once the 20th Century Fox logo disappears into blackness, we are immediately presented with an impression of what the film will be like. A television appears in the distance, against a black background (the emptiness of the surroundings make us concentrate on the television, and does not distract us). The fact that we are shown a television tells us that it's a modern film, and has brought Shakespeare to the present day. This is further proved by the fact that the presenter is a black woman, who until recently wouldn't have been given such a job. Her hair and clothes are smart (to show the time period), yet plain, so as not to distract us from what she is saying. Behind her there is a picture of a broken ring, a symbol of broken love, telling those who have trouble with the language, or need some time to adapt, what the story is about. The whole ensemble is given a very detached feel, by the fact that it's a long shot of the television (so we are distanced from what's happening), that her voice is lacking in emotion, and that it's a news program (we're used to stories of death and violence on the news, and often pay them little attention). Shakespeare manages to set the scene of the greatest love story ever told, and reveals a romance discovered in Italy that concerns two feuding families (the Capulets and the Montagues) and two members of which that fall madly in love with each other. 'Romeo and Juliet' is set over a five-day period, starting Sunday morning and ending Thursday morning. In those five days numerous events had occurred and the interpretation of particular characters change. Act 3 Scene 5 is a pivotal scene in the play as Juliet has already defied her parents by marrying a Montague. Right at the beginning of any text, it is vital that the author is able to engage the audience or reader's attention. Shakespeare was almost thirty years old when he wrote the successful play, 'Romeo and Juliet'. Although 'Romeo and Juliet' was popularised by William Shakespeare, it actually originated form an Italian prose writer called Meccucio Salerintano. Salerintano first wrote it in 1476; however, Shakespeare's source may have come from a minor Elizabethan poet called Arthur Brooke. He wrote a narrative poem with the name of 'The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet'. Before 'Romeo and Juliet', Shakespeare had completed two tragedies, 'Richard III' and 'Titus Adronicus,' both of which included pride, envy, murder and intrigue. Then, in 1595, 'Romeo and Juliet' was produced and the characters from this play, acted like the characters of his previous romantic comedies. The play is a sorrowful tragedy, which includes laughter, happiness and sensitivity even though we already know the ending is dark and painful to everyone. He was one of eight children of John Shakespeare, a local town official and glove maker, and Mary Arden. In 1982 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at only eighteen. They had three children together, Susanna, and twin Judith and Hannet. Sadly Hannet tragically died at eleven. Shakespeare was known for performing at the Globe theatre with the Chamberlains Men. He wrote 37 plays in his lifetime and one of his most famous plays was Romeo and Juliet. I am going to compare lines 1-100 of Act One, Scene One from the text of the two film versions; Franco Zeffirelli's version and Baz Luhrmann's version. The text opens with the prologue, which gives a brief outline of the story, it is 14 lines long, and is therefore typical of what is known as a sonnet. When it was written, Shakespeare was quite young, 31, already five years into his career. Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne at the time, and many of the characteristics of Elizabethan lifestyle are included within the play. In the Elizabethan times, it was not unusual for people to get married and have children young. In the play Lady Capulet says, "By my count, I was your mother much upon these years," to Juliet, who appears to be about 12 years old. She is telling Juliet that she was already a mother at Juliet's age, implying she should be getting ready to marry now. Women were also not considered of much importance in those days. They were not as 'important' as men, and just used for sex, which plays a big part in the topic of conversation between characters throughout the play. We watched a version directed by Franco Zeffirelli (1968) and another by modern director Baz Luhrmann (1996). In addition, we read extracts from the Romeo and Juliet script we received. Our task was to compare and contrast the prologue and opening scenes of the two movies, and give our views. The prologue of Franco Zeffirelli's version opens with a sweeping shot of the rolling hills of Verona. Gentle, soothing music is playing that fits in with the idyllic and peaceful scenery. The voiceover begins with a sombre, almost sympathetic tone of voice that fits in well with the music that plays in the background. It is easy to tell from the outset that Zeffirelli was aiming for authenticity, even going as far as to film the scenes in Verona. Timing was important in Zeffirelli's version and the line "two star-crossed lovers take their lives" is said at the same time the title of the film, "Romeo and Juliet", appears. This identifies the two star-crossed lovers as Romeo and Juliet, and in a way tells you the outcome of the story before it has even started. Saturation can give many effects in a trailer e.g. if there is a scene on a hot, sunny beach, you would want to saturate all the reds, yellows and oranges to make the scene "feel" hotter.
