The Cause of Hatred and Distrust in the Middle East.

The Cause of Hatred and Distrust in the Middle East The war in Iraq is further poisoning the already noxious political atmosphere between Arabs and Americans. It has intensified and increased dangerous feelings of humiliation and outrage among the Arab public, while paranoid rhetoric about Western attacks against Islam elsewhere is spreading from the religious fringe to the mainstream. It is simplistic and self- serving for political leaders in the West to tell us that the terrorists attacks happen because they "hate freedom," or "hate our democratic values" or "they despise our love of liberty." Many, in fact, hate what they perceive as materialistic Western values, but this is not what leads them to kill themselves in suicide bombings, or to murder thousands of innocent civilians. The main source of Arabs' anger, since the end of British occupation in the Middle East to the end of the Iraq conflict, stems from the partitioning of Palestine, American aid to the Arabs' enemies, Israel, Israel's control of sites holy to Muslims as well as Israel's work in developing the "Ethnic Bomb", and the United Nations' sanction on Iraqi people for more than a decade. The beginning of the current conflict can be traced back to when the partitioning process took place. According to CIA data: "After World War II, the British withdrew from their mandate of Palestine, and the UN partitioned

Nuclear proliferation in Iran

The world is becoming much smaller than it was in the 20th century. Military conflicts are becoming less reliant on strategy and fighting style and more reliant on who has the best weapon capabilities. States are worrying about who is will the press the red button that could start a nuclear holocaust. Nuclear weapons are the deciding factor in whether a state poses a threat to the international community. Iran, a country that is trying to become a new hegemony on the world stage, is attempting to gain nuclear weapons. It is very important that the United States and its democratic allies keep Iran from succeeding in their nuclear program. Even though it is tough to stop another country from doing anything, the problem that can arise if Iran succeeds could be catastrophic, a catastrophe that might lead to world war III that would surely include the use of nuclear weapons. A government’s main priority is to ensure the safety of its citizens and protect the countries ideologies. To keep safe states are doing two things. One, they are attempting to gain nuclear capabilities and two; they are aliening themselves with already nuclear capable states that share common ideologies in domestic, political and foreign policies. For the states that already have nuclear capabilities, they are trying to stop states with opposing ideologies from gain nuclear weapons. This is all

Conflicts over place

Conflicts over place Conflicts over places involve rival claims to define their meaning and thereby, rights to control their use or future. This is all centred on the concept of a 'sense of place', where particular places hold significance and meanings for people thus being important in how people define their identities. While some people might feel that some of their characteristics are linked with certain places. A sense of place is important in making sense of the world around us giving us feelings of belonging to certain places, ranging from individual structures to whole countries or regions. However particular places might hold different meanings to different groups of people leading to the potential clashing of ideas and concepts. While some groups might take this a step further by attempting to gain overall control of a particular place increasing the potential for conflict. Many of today's examples for conflict over places are centred on the interpretation of an area's past. This would certainly include Jerusalem in Israel, where the origins of conflict lie in the areas religious history. Jerusalem is the holy city of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Situated in the Judaean Hills, 35 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. The growth of the city may be attributed to its location along a pass through the Judean Hills on an ancient trade route, and to its religious

The roots of the Arab Israeli Conflict.

Modern World Study : The Arab Israeli Conflict The Roots Of The Conflict Both sides have very strong religious historical claims to the land of Palestine. The Jews were the first to settle in Palestine in 1200 BC. 1000 years later the Jews were driven out of Palestine by the Romans. 500 years later the Arabs conquer Palestine. Both Nations have lived in Palestine for at least 1000 years, giving them both historical claims to Palestine Jerusalem is where the Wailing Wall is situated. It is also the home of the Dome Of The Rock, site of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac. For these reasons Jerusalem is the Jews' most Holy city. The Dome Of The Rock also has significance for the Arabs; it is the site of Mohammed's Night Journey. Palestine is also the site of El Aqsa, the final judgement will take place. But for the Arabs, Jerusalem is only their third most holy city. Because of these claims, both sides can call Palestine their homeland, both historically and religiously. This means that by favouring the claims of one side, the other side will be offended. Events since 1948 Since 1948, the state of Israel has been involved in many wars. There have been five wars in the last 50 years. In each case, the Israelis have won the war, and with few exceptions the Arabs have been embarrassed. In the 1920s the Jewish immigration encouraged large numbers of highly skilled intelligent and

why some palestinians dont agree with terrorism

Why does the Palestinian president and some Palestinians not support terrorists? The disputing conflict between Palestinians and Israelis has led to a number of terrorist attacks and clashes between opposing groups. A significant event occurred in the southern Israeli resort of Eilat where a suicide bomber killed three people and Palestinian militant groups claimed they were behind the attack. The attack was carried out by three known Palestinian groups - Islamic Jihad, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and The Islamic Brigade. This resort to extremism was carried out by Palestinian militants due to what was described as a "natural reaction" to the actions of Israel in the West Bank and Gaza. Suicide bombings such as these are carried out considering hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces; mainly in the Gaza strip. Militant groups are retaliating and acting toward bad treatment by Israelis such as humiliation, vandalism and expansion of settlements. The Palestinian group who mainly act out acts of terrorism are the Hamas group who feel they want to obliterate Israel whereas some minorities feel there is no need to react; if there is an end to terrorism there will be an end to bad treatment. These two opposing viewpoints are the pivotal attributes to the outcome of clashes and riots between political parties. A critical reason for Palestinians to oppose

Would you agree that the creation of Israel in May 1948 has been the most important event in shaping the present situation in the Arab Israeli conflict?

Would you agree that the creation of Israel in May 1948 has been the most important event in shaping the present situation in the Arab Israeli conflict? One cause of the current conflict between the Arabs and the Israelis is the creation of Israel in 1948. There are lots of other important factors, which have contributed to this major area of dispute and hostility between the Arabs and Israelis; a dispute is still far from conciliation. In 1947 the UN discussed the future of Palestine and a decision was attained to separate the land into two states: Jewish and Arab. The Jewish leader agreed with this idea but the Arabs rejected it as there were less Jews than Arabs and yet the Jews were to be given more land. Even though both sides didn't agree to the creation of Israel it went ahead. Despite having done nothing wrong, the partition left the Arabs feeling punished. They were determined that they would regain the land wrongfully taken from them. Since that day the Arabs and Jews have fought over whom the land rightfully belongs to. Source 1 shows what the creation of Israel has caused to occur in today's society. Israeli soldiers treat the body of the Palestinian man they had just murdered as a trophy. That is one example of the horrendous atrocities the creation of Israel is causing at the present. Another cause of the conflict in the Middle East today is that both sides

Using events from 1968 onwards explain why the PLO moved making peace with Israel in 1993.

Using events from 1968 onwards explain why the PLO moved making peace with Israel in 1993. After WW2 the leaders of the superpowers of the world (America, Britain, and France) felt it was right to give the Jewish people a country of their own, after the horrors they endured at the hands of Hitler. They decided that the small country of Palestine, in the Middle East would be the ideal place, even though there were many Arabs living there already. They would rename the Jewish part of Palestine Israel. This would obviously anger the native Palestinians because they were forced to give up half of their land, which they had had for thousands of years, and all of the people living in those areas would lose their homes. This naturally brought about conflicts between the two religions. I will be trying to explain why the PLO moved making peace with Israel in 1993. I will use the factors: The PLO; Israel and the USA to back up my points. The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) was formed in 1964 as a direct consequence of the Jews living in Palestine and they are the also the largest Palestinian group of freedom fighters. In 1968 Yasser Arafat became the leader of the PLO and he has remained there, forever since. He believes that Palestine cannot defeat Israel through war, but instead they should use terrorism to try and destroy Israel. He said: "When we hi-jack a plane it has

Analysing How Conflict Has Affected Human Rights in Israel and Palestine.

1-13/1/03 Analysing How Conflict Has Affected Human Rights in Israel and Palestine Every individual has nobility. Human Rights were introduced as a way of guaranteeing that the dignity of everyone is properly and equally respected. To be more precise, a human being should be able to fully expand and use human qualities such as intelligence, talent and conscience. One ought to be able to satisfy his or her religious and other needs. This is a brief description of Humanistic Civil rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNUDHR) was prepared by the U.N. as a form of keeping peace between civilians. The term 'United Nations' was first used on the 1st of Jan 1942 to represent the main group of countries (USA, Britain, France, etc.) fighting against the three axis powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) (www.un.org/). On the 25th April 1948, the United Nations was formally set up. It aimed to keep international peace and solve problems without violence. It was 1948 when the UNUDHR had been introduced. Since then, there have been many conflicts arising all over the world. One of these is the dispute between Israel and Palestine. This began when Jews wanted to settle in the Arab-inhabited land of Palestine. When the Ottoman Empire collapsed, Palestine was ruled by Britain, and since the Jews wished for a homeland, Britain had promised support to establish one in Palestine.

What happened to the Palestinians as a consequence of the 1948 War? Now internationally known as Israel, this significant area of land (approx 10,000 square miles) is situated in the middle East at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. The capital is Jerusalem and its neighbouring countries are Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The state language is Hebrew, however over the years the range of people populating the land has considerably grown. Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, German, Russian, Polish, Romanian and Persian people all occupy Israel. The land too ranges from the fertile densely populated Mediterranean coastal plains to the lowest place on earth; the Great Rift Valley. The Israeli/Palestine conflict has been a major issue ever since the ancient times when it was originally the homeland of the Jews, Judea (meaning the area around Jerusalem). In 6 AD the Romans conquered Judea and it was renamed Palestine. The Jews were forcibly exiled from their homeland and scattered across the world. Then in 7 AD Palestine was conquered by the Arab followers of the prophet Muhammed, Arabs then occupied Palestine for thousands of years and Islam and the Arabic language became a familiar way of life for the Palestinian population. In 1516 Palestine was conquered by the Turkish ottoman Empire. In the late years of the 19th century, anti-semitism in Russia and then France became more

How far is religion the main cause of the conflict in the Middle East since 1914?

How far is religion the main cause of the conflict in the Middle East since 1914? The conflict in the Middle East has been unsolved for years and since then there has been much violence and suffering. Arabs and Jews both have a claim to the land that we now call Israel. In biblical times God promised Abraham the land of Canaan, now Israel if he and his followers spread the word of God. The Jews settled there. "Then the Lord appeared to Abraham and said 'To your descendants I will give this land'". (Genesis 12:7). Over the next 700 years different societies had control over the land. When the Romans took control, the Emperor Hadrien pushed the Jews out of Israel and they became a scattered people. In the early Middle Ages, the Arabs controlled a huge empire covering the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Western Europe. Gradually this declined but the Arabs still kept Palestine. An important religious development took place during the 7th Century when most Arabs converted to Islam, after the death of their leader Muhammed. Jerusaluem, in the heart of Palestine, became a holy Islamic city as many Arabs believed this is where their great leader Muhammed had ascended to heaven. This made Jerusaluem a great religious centre for Arabs. In 1896 a Jew named Theodor Herzl published the Jewish State which says that the Jewish people needed a homeland. He wanted to call for
