Middle east conflict - There have been several attempts to bring peace to this area but there is still no end to the fighting. What are the main obstacles to peace and how have these stopped previous attempts from working (including the most recent)?

A03: "There have been several attempts to bring peace to this area but there is still no end to the fighting. What are the main obstacles to peace and how have these stopped previous attempts from working (including the most recent)? There has been violence in the Middle East for the past 60 years, and there still seems to be no hope of a compromise between the Palestinians and the Israelis. In order for a peace settlement to work, both sides must agree to it, and must overcome the four main barriers which stand in the way. They must reach a compromise over the city of Jerusalem, showing it should be controlled by both peoples because of the joint history between them, the attitudes and expectations should try to be fulfilled, which would destroy the extremist movements on both sides of the conflict, but more importantly, it has to see a solution for the refugee crisis in this area of the world, that sometimes people believe are less deadly than the African refugee crisises. The first barrier to peace is the attitudes and expectations both sides have over this conflict. I looked at this section much more closely in the earlier sections of my coursework, but I have found out that both sides have strong historical and religious claims to Palestine- the Jews believe the land was promised to them 4000 years ago by God, from evidence in the Bible, and that they were unjustly

Why was the State of Israel successfully established in 1948?

Why was the State of Israel successfully established in 1948? The State of Israel was formally established in May 1948. The creation of a Jewish homeland fulfilled an ancient desire within the Jewish community for their own independent state, however its creation was largely due to a culmination of a series of factors during the first half of the 20th century that lead to the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948, identifying these factors will form the first part of this essay. The second part of this essay will focus on Israel's continued successful establishment as an autonomous state through 1948 following the Declaration of Independence as Israel faced attack from its Arab neighbours. It is necessary to examine Israel's actions during this time as its survival during this period is the best example of Israel having been successfully established. The Zionist movement was integral to the establishment of Israel, scholar Michael Wolffsohn arguing that its creation was primarily due to the political, economic, social and military achievements of its founders. (1) They were responsible for bringing the issue of a Jewish homeland to the forefront of global politics in the 20th century. The Zionists believed that the Jews were so different from other races that they could not live with other people and therefore needed their own independent Jewish state to live in,

The Lebanon Civil War: Syria’s Role in Lebanon

Nikola Uzelac History - Guided Course Work The Lebanon Civil War: Syria's Role in Lebanon Brief introduction: Lebanon is situated in the middle of the gulf, at the East of Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon's territory is let say very exceptional, looking at all the mountains that are falling in the sea, valleys around the river Beca, and Mediterranean coast. Beirut is a capital and one of the main harbors and trade metropolis in the whole Middle East. For the neighboring Arabian countries, Beirut is also the main gate to the world. As result of the very ritch history Beirut had very rear architecture, with the mingled orient and west influences. Exactly in the civil war I am going to write in the following pages, the most of these beautiful buildings were totally destroyed, as well as overall life in the country. CAUSES OF THE LEBANON CIVIL WAR: As the conflicts are concerned, the main issue acctually is the cause of the conflicts. As a starting point, it seems that Beirut was very attractive city for a long time ago, equally for the neighboring Arabic countries as well as for the rest of the world. Beirut was attractive as the place where in the first place, have passed by the thousand and hundred tones of various sorts of goods. Something that is also very attractive, is the oil pipelines .. Close to Beirut and other cities in Lebanon were very great and important oil

Discuss whether a peaceful solution to the arab - Israeli conflict is possible.

Discuss whether a peaceful solution to the arab - Israeli conflict is possible. Palestine, presently known as Israel, belonged historically to the Jews. During the time of the old biblical days, Abraham moved to Canaan (present day Israel) from Ur (present day Iraq). Due to severe famine the Israelites moved south settling in Egypt, east of the Nile delta. After being pressed into slavery and finally rescued by Moses, they resettled in modern day Israel. The Jews were driven out of Palestine by the Romans who occupied the land at the time, after two revolts in AD 70 and AD 135. The Arabs remained in Palestine. Jews were expelled and had to resettle wherever they could. They were often persecuted. Hatred of the Jews (anti-Semitism) stemmed from a variety of reasons. They were seen as 'Christ killers', as an elite group which considered itself to be the 'Chosen people'. By the end of the nineteenth century, anti-Semitism was commonplace in Europe, for example there were organized attacks on Jews in Russia ( pogroms). It was at this time that a movement called Zionism was set out to establish a Jewish homeland. The idea was put forward by Theodor Herzl. The main aim of Zionism was, 'to create for the Jewish people a homestead in Palestine secured by public law.' Also during WWII Hitler found the best solution to the "Jewish problem" by exterminating them in such a

Arab and Israeli conflict - source related study.

History Coursework Arab and Israeli conflict In this coursework I will be studying sources and show their effect and purpose also I will give my own views on the Arab and Israeli conflict. From looking at sources A and B I have learned the motivation of the members of the PLO was that the people of Palestine wanted to regain their land and would do anything to get it back from the Israeli. Another thing I have learned from these sources was the people who wrote them were anti-Semitism and had feelings of hatred towards the Jews. I can tell this because the way the source was written was to persuade people that the Palestinians were eager to get their land back from the Jews and would kill them if necessary. In addition to this they had waited to long and were impatient "For twenty years our people have been waiting for a solution to the Palestinians problem." This shows that the people had been waiting to long and wanted the problem resolved this is why they joined the PLO. Some other things mentioned in these two sources was the Palestinians refused to remain as refugees and wanted their land back. When concluding both sources A and B the purpose of both of them was to get an message across that the PLO was ready to regain their land and they were ready to fight "we are ready to shed our blood for you!" this show the people of the PLO were willing to clash with the

The Arab-Israeli Conflict

Both the Arabs and the Jews have lived in this fertile area of Israel since Biblical times. Both also claim to be descendants of Abraham; Jews are descended from Isaac. Arabs are Ishmael. After biblical time the Romans conquered the Middle East, the Jews living in Israel were persecuted, and so when they revolted against the Romans in AD 135 they were expelled and never allowed to return. As a result of this Jews were dispersed and resettled in Europe and Asia. Meanwhile the Arabs stayed in this area and renamed in Palestine. In 1516 the Ottoman Empire conquered Palestine and drove the Romans out. By the beginning of the 19th century the Ottoman Empire was becoming weak and other European countries were becoming interested in the Middle East. The United Kingdom in particular were interested in this piece of land as they had colonised India and the Suez canal, Egypt, meant that this would make transporting goods like spices and silks a lot easier than having to go round Africa. The United Kingdom even bought shares in the canal because they were so interested in the use of it. The reason why the canal was of such great importance to the British was because journeys to the east would be a lot faster and safer than travelling round the south of Africa. The Arabs wanted to be independent as they were sick of being dictated to by the Turks and they looked for help from

Israel's Security Barrier

Franziska Salem 900-02-0600 International Relations Dr. Sherine El Ghatit Paper, draft 2 Israel's Security Barrier The idea of a wall or fence separating the Israeli state and Palestine has gained fruit in the past years. While the concept of the wall started with vague ideas, it has now been turned into reality with the completion of the first phase of the wall in the summer of 2003.The Israelis claim that the barrier is necessary because it is the only way of protecting its citizens. Many Israelis have been targets of, and have suffered from, Palestinian suicide attacks. These have increased with the beginning of the Al-Aksa Intifada in the year 2000. This, claim Israeli officials, is sufficient reason for the planned barrier that is supposed to prevent such attacks in the future. Since a number of issues revolve around the erection of the wall its construction is not as simple. While The Israelis insist on the wall being a defense system, Palestinians claim that the planned wall is a way of annexing more of the Palestinian territory. Both, the Palestinian and the Israelis have extremely opposing views on the construction of the wall. The construction of the wall will therefore only serve Israeli interests and will be a definite loss for the Palestinians. Besides being illegally built since the construction of the wall will lead to de facto annexation of occupied

Can terrorism ever be a legitimate and effective means of pursuing political goals?

Word Count 3,100. Can terrorism ever be a legitimate and effective means of pursuing political goals? In politics there are many ways to implement change, in a democracy it is possible to change the existing system through elections, lobbying and petitioning. In a more authoritarian regime more extreme measures may be required to bring about change, such as a revolution or coup d'etat. However, when these methods are not possible or fail, many groups are left with terrorism as the only way to achieve their political goals. Most of these groups believe that their struggles are valid and their methods are necessary even though their attacks bring almost uniform condemnation from the international community. Before it is possible to examine how legitimate or justifiable terrorism is as a political tool it is vital to first find a working definition of it and to also see what the political aims are of those that use it often are. Smaller groups and organizations usually use terrorism when they believe there is no other way to achieve their aims. When a group are too small to effect change in a democracy or are not powerful enough to overthrow a totalitarian government either because they lack widespread support or because the regime is too strong then terrorism is often seen by the group as a justifiable means to pursue their goals. As well as a tool used by people against

Can Terrorism Be Stopped?

CAN TERRORISM BE STOPPED? Terrorism may be well considered one of the most controversial topics today. One can ask twenty different people their feelings on terrorism and what they believed it to be; a person may get twenty different answers. What are the crucial elements in modern terrorism? There is, first of all a fascination on the media publicizing this so much. The nature and history of terrorism as we know it today is that terrorist's like to provoke the public who has the authorities that gives them the upper hand scenario. The whole point, of terrorism, summed up, is that this is an issue that must not be ignored. Meaning the over reaction of the press, public and governments have to stop exploiting terrorist's that helps them kill innocent people for gaining a title. The only thing that people gain from such an act is capturing attention from the media so they are ahead of the game. Terrorism is a ballgame and you have to know how to play it well. It is calculated to create major fear, which in turns allows people to respond however they want. We face terrorism in our world everyday of our lives.
