Examine the impacts of UK retirement migration to the Mediterranean on the source and host regions?

Examine the impacts of UK retirement migration to the Mediterranean on the source and host regions? The ageing population from the UK (the source) are migrating in considerable numbers to the Mediterranean (The host) an example of this is Spain, and this had both positive and negative impacts on the source and hosts. There are a number of positives for the source country. One positive is there is less of a burden on the countries services, examples of this being healthcare and housing, with the ageing population moving to the Mediterranean this requires less money to be spent upon an elderly population which invariably need more healthcare treatment and this helps to reduce economic costs. The movement abroad also reduces the dependency ratio in Britain as there are less dependent people for the economical active to support and this is a benefit to the source country which is Britain as it reduces the economic burden on the country. However the movement of the elderly population to the Mediterranean also has negative impacts on the source country. One example of this is the breakup of families as the older population moves away; with grandparents moving abroad this can cause family problems in Britain and can in some cases make families more dysfunctional. The movement of grandparents abroad also take away the possibility of free childcare and this is a negative impact as

With reference to case studies discuss the importance labour plays in the location of industry

With reference to case studies discuss the importance labour plays in the location of industry. Labour is an important locational factor for industry, however in some industries it is of greater importance than others. In the high-tech quaternary sector highly skilled labour is essential, more so than other factors such as energy or raw materials. For this reason high-tech companies choose to locate near their labour force, often around large cities and university towns. Cambridge is a good example of this trend. As an attractive city with the prominent Cambridge university at its centre it is an ideal location for high-tech industry. These factors have lead to the development of the Cambridge Science Park, 3km North of the city centre, founded by Trinity college. The group of science and technology related businesses benefits from close links with the university where it is provided with a constant flow of skilled, enthusiastic labour. Similarly in East Anglia, where there is the highest concentration of high quality software engineers and developers in Europe, there has been an influx of technology companies, this is evident with the recent development of Ipswich, a town in the South East once renowned as a port. Ipswich itself has a skilled and flexible workforce and serves a wide area with a third of a million people living within 12 miles and now has the greatest

Explain how the transfer of capital can be influenced by world trading organisations and financial institutions?

Explain how the transfer of capital can be influenced by world trading organisations and financial institutions? (10marks) The transfer of capital is influenced by three main organisations and financial institutions; these are the World Trade organisation (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The organisations don't literally deal with companies and countries money, but instead guide and work together to make trade easier and also to encourage developing countries to trade in order to develop further. The WTO has been set up with around 150 countries, with over 30 planning on joining in the near future. They are set up to encourage trade between countries, but also to ensure the trade is fair and legitimate. The WTO works by particular people representing each country to discuss any trade problems and to ensure everybody is treated equally. One of the largest problems the WTO has had to deal with is the "banana wars", where countries in the Caribbean and Latin America have been allowed free trade since 1975, with no excess fee to Europe as they were part of their colony. Although the WTO is far more focused on a global aspect of trade, paying focus to both developed and developing countries, the IMF is far more focused on developing countries, especially those that are in need of financial support or aid. One of the most recent cases the IMF

Investigate to see if adding mass to a cupcake case will increase the speed at which the case falls, in air.

Investigate to see if adding mass to a cupcake case will increase the speed at which the case falls, in air. Plan Key Variables * Drag, or air resistance, is a force that is a variable that can affect the accuracy of the results that we will get. * Mass is a key variable too. * Wind currents are a key variable. * The height from which the cupcake cases are dropped. Background Knowledge Acceleration: Is the change in velocity of an object per unit time. This happens when two unbalanced forces act on each other. Force: The force of weight makes any given object fall towards the earth's centre. As the object falls it accelerates, because of its weight, till it reaches a speed, were it does not accelerate any more because the forces acting on each other; drag and the weight; become balanced, this is known as terminal velocity. Here are a few formulas that I know form previous encounters with this subject: F = m * a A = Change in velocity / time taken A = F / a A = V / (a * t) The air resistance force, otherwise known as drag, acts in the exact opposite direction to the gravitational force (which acts towards the centre of the earth). When the object hits the ground, the forces of the object that it lands on and the gravitational force, balance out which causes that object stay in a set position. Previously, in measuring acceleration I measured the

The Effects of Smoking On Health

THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING ON HEALTH Smoking is the act of inhaling the fumes of burning substances. It used to be men who mainly smoked pipes and cigars which involve little inhalation. Now a days the amount of young women and children smoking is on the increase although the overall amount of people who smoke is declining in most countries. There are thought to be around 4000 different chemical in a cigarette, many are toxic and 43 of them are carcinogens. The main substances in a cigarette are tar, carbon monoxide and nicotine. It is these three substances which cause the greatest threat to health causing damage to either the gaseous exchange or the cardiovascular system. Tar is dangerous because it settles on the lining of the airways in the lungs. In the 1950's it was found to cause changes that can cause lung cancer and lung disease. Lung disease causes the sufferer difficulty in breathing. This is caused by tiny particles settling in the depths of the lungs. These particles make the lungs more susceptible to air borne infections, such as pneumonia, influenza and allergic reactions. If these become very bad they can trigger asthma attacks and server coughing which causes damage to the alveoli. Continuous coughing causes scaring of the alveolar surface which reduces the surface area for diffusion. Chronic bronchitis is also caused by tar in cigarettes. The tar

The Changing Role of Classroom Assistants

The Changing Role of Classroom Assistants There is an increasing level of concern regarding the increasing workload of teachers within schools. A major cause of concern is also the deficit in the number of qualified teachers, which has been estimated as high as 40,000 teachers by the year 2006. On average a teacher during term time spends 52 hours working, including 20% or roughly ten hours a week on tasks not directly involved with their teaching role, such as photocopying and preparing worksheets for classes. It is widely accepted that if there are going to be improvements within the education system, this problem needs to be addressed, reducing the amount of non-teaching work for teachers and encouraging more people into the teaching career. A recently proposed method of modifying the education system in order to help achieve this, is to increase the responsibilities and levels of work carried out by classroom assistants. Classroom assistants are members of the school staff who support fully -qualified teachers, doing non-teaching tasks within the classroom such as preparing materials, photocopying or listening to children read. They undergo the same vetting procedures as all staff working with children, and generally earn between £9,531 and £12,444 a year based on a working week of 32.5 hours, however they generally do not get paid for the school holidays so wages

Theory of Knowledge Journals - Perception Unit

Theory of Knowledge Journals Table of Contents DATE JOURNAL ENTRY * September 7th, 2007 * "I know" entry * September 21st, 2007 * Perception entry * October 10th, 2007 * October 26th, 2007 * The sense of smell entry * The Matrix entry "I Know" Journal Friday September 7th, 2007 Magdalena Nowakowska Today on Friday September 7th, my friend Radhika informed me about the fact that she knows that a student dropped out of our Physics class. The reason that she knows this is because of her personal experience or empirical knowledge. Radhika independently saw the student leave the class. The physics teacher, Mrs. Drekic, also informed her that a student was leaving the class. Thus, she also gained the knowledge by authority. Recently, my mother told me that she knows it has been nearly six years since the September 11th terrorist attack on New York City in 2001. There are several reasons as to why my mother knows the written above statement. One is because she lived through this event; thus, she knows it because of personal experience. Another reason why my mother knows for a fact that the September 11th terrorist attack was six years ago is because of authority. The television network CNN [Cable Network News] has declared several times on the news program that the terrorist attack was six years ago. Perception Journal Friday September 21st, 2007 Magdalena

Role of the Family in Society

Role of the family Family systems, like biological organisms, evolve with time and circumstance. It seems readily evident from an examination of the nature and role of the family in the developing world that form may indeed follow function. Many sociological studies conducted in recent years have indicated that the nuclear family is found at both the primitive and modern stages of economic evolution. The nuclear family predominated in early societies with subsistence hunting and gathering economies where food supplies were uncertain, and still predominates in modern industrial societies where the marketplace requires the geographical mobility of small, nuclear systems. This pattern of family roles in society, established over long centuries, still applies in most of the developing nations of the Third World. Examinations of the sociological histories of various areas of Europe, Asia, and South America provide us with useful examples of the durability of the nuclear family. The nuclear family has always been important in the Third World societies of Eastern Europe, where households have been small and based on monogamous marriage, even where polygamy has been permitted. Ties to both parents? relatives have been and still are respected, even when descent has been traced through only one line. Bonds between parent and child have always been legally and emotionally

The conditions that require circuit protection are direct shorts, excessive current and excessive heat. When one or more of these conditions occur the above protective devices (connected in series with the supply) are able to disconnect the circuit thus preventing the danger. Fuses Circuit symbol: This provides protection by melting due to the heat produced because of ohmic resistance, when a higher than a rated current flows through it. There are three main types of fuses, Re-wirable fuses These have a thin wire that is held on a ceramic holder. The wire is designed to burn when a high current passes. An advantage is the reusability but it is vulnerable to mishandling where incorrect fusing elements can be fitted by inexperienced people, putting users in danger. Other Problems with this type are the oxidization (causes the cross section of the wire to reduce
