The Slinky Fad.

Ross Leelum The Slinky Fad In the world today we always come across fads that have been rejuvenated from the past or some that are just still around but not extremely popular. We find fads in things like clothing, actions of individuals and toys and gadgets. Some of them are extremely silly while others are taken very seriously but no matter what they always tend to change our society. They created the popular cultures of the past and are always continuous. In the 1940's the Slinky was one of the most popular fads that caught worldwide attention and is still around today. A "Slinky" is Eighty-Seven feet of flat wire coiled into three inch diameter circles, standing two inches high when stacked. Its springlike appearance and structure allows it to walk down stairs and stretch apart. In 1945 around the time of the Vietnam War, a naval engineer named Richard James was developing an anti-vibration device for ship instruments which consisted of springs when by mistake he knocked over a few springs and was amazed at how they appeared to walk down the shelves in his working area. He then came up with the name "Slinky" which is Swedish for healthy, sleek and graceful. He then made a number of these toys and decided to sell them at the Gimbel's Department store in Philadelphia during the winter of 1945, just in time for the Christmas season. At that time he sold them for one

Sin city anaylsis

Sin city poster uses chiaroscuro lightning which contrasts between light and dark; this gives several different effects, light represents good, while dark represents evil. This leads us to think that the film is about good vs. evil. Were as Kill bill portrays quite a bright image, the lighting is high key as the fundamental colours are used very effectively; the oranges and yellow's are blending in together connoting fire, this leads us to think that the film will be quite lively with action and sets the mood of the film. The poster of sin city depicts quite a dark image, the only feature which is colourful in the poster is the name of the movie "sin city" which is in a big comic red font which is very effective, this could have been done for several reasons; to catch the audiences eye and make them keep in mind the name of the film, it could also be put in red to symbolize danger, death and blood which is a common thriller signifier and straight away tells you the genre of the film which is a thriller. In Kill Bill, the presence of a samurai sword which urma Thurman is holding establishes the film as a martial arts type of film, the sword is also an iconography of violence. There is blood on urma Thurman to represent a death of someone; this sets the genre of the film and places it as also a thriller. In sin city the use of diagonal rain is used, the light reflects off the

Give an account of the design arguments from Aquinas and Paley.

a) Give an account of the design arguments from Aquinas and Paley. The Design Argument is perhaps one of the most well known arguments for the existence of God, this may be down to the wealth of philosophers that developed their own versions, or the sometimes simplistic nature of the argument which, initially, states that a designer must exist since the universe and living things exhibit marks of design in their order, consistency, unity, and pattern. As an 'a posteriori' argument it uses empirical evidence from our natural world in order to prove our world is ordered, consistent, united and patterned. The teleological argument fits true to our human nature which frequently observes these marks, perhaps even when it is not there. Although the design argument is generally attributed to Paley due to his analogy, his own approach is greatly influenced by St Thomas Aquinas, and even those before him, such as Plato, Aristotle and Socrates who all formed their own versions of a teleological argument. Aquinas in particular was the main driving force of the teleological argument before Paley. The argument forms the fifth of Aquinas' five ways. He looked at the universe qua regularity, in that he looked at design in relation to the order and regularity in the universe. Aquinas stated that everything worked to some purpose or other. Aquinas pointed towards inanimate objects such as

What Is The Dramatic Importance Of Inspector Goole's Character In Priestly's 'An Inspector Calls' And What Things Would A Director Need To Consider When Casting This Role

What Is The Dramatic Importance Of Inspector Goole's Character In Priestly's 'An Inspector Calls' And What Things Would A Director Need To Consider When Casting This Role. In this essay I intend to discuss the dramatic importance of Inspector Goole's character in Priestly's 'An Inspector Calls'. Inspector Goole is a catalyst for the events of the play. He is calm, firm and confident. He forces, with words, the other characters to acknowledge and confess to knowing Eva Smith at one time or another. His manner also enables him to bring Sheila and Eric to the realisation of their guilt and responsibility towards the death of Eva Smith. Inspector Goole is dominating and puts a lot of pressure on the character he is questioning, this allows him to reveal the chain of events that led to the death of Eva Smith. A director would have to consider this when casting the role. Inspector Goole has a great presence, 'he creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness'. Inspector Goole dominates the situation from the start and is not intimidated by Mr. Birling, Gerald Groft or anyone else in the family. Inspector Goole is always in control, '(taking charge masterfully)', he dominates the proceedings though-out the play, '(cooly, looking hard at him)', this also shows that Inspector Goole is not intimidated by anybody in the family and is in total

La Belle Dame Sans Merci

Look again at the poet's description of their loved one in 'Shall I compare thee?' Compare this with another poet's description of their loved on in one of the other poems from the pre-1914 selection. La Belle Dame Sans Merci I will compare the sonnet 'Shall I compare thee?' written by William Shakespeare to the ballad 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' written by John Keats. I have chosen to compare these two poems as they share various themes and contain differences too. 'Shall I compare thee' celebrates the beauty of the mans beloved. The poem shows that the poet wants the beauty to last forever and that in fact it will. 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' is about a lady who is supernatural and holds a strange power over the knight and other strong men. Both women have an overpowering beauty that the men wish to last forever. One is kept alive through a dream and the other through literature. 'Shall I compare thee' compares the loved one's beauty to the beauty of a summer's day shown in line one; 'Shall I compare thee to a Summers day?' The poet shows that the lady is more beautiful than summer for many reasons. The use of the symbol : in line four shows that the points will be explained. The women's beauty will last forever because the poet has written this poem. Line fourteen says "So long lives this, and this gives life to thee." 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' means the beautiful woman

God and Man in Dracula (1930), The Mummy (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

John Heylin May 8, 2007 Section AD God and Man The cycle of films produced at Universal Studios in the early 1930s represents, in important ways, the advent and elaboration of the twentieth century horror genre. Among the many themes introduced in films such as Dracula (1930), The Mummy (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935) is that of God and Man. In this paper, I intend to explore this theme by closely investigating the creation of the bride that takes place near the end of Bride of Frankenstein. Although a variety of narrative codes operating in this scene illuminate the film's meaning, it is the fine line between God and Man that deserves critical scrutiny. The creation of the bride scene opens up with the kites being released into the oncoming storm in hope of catching the electricity from a lightening bolt. We then cut to a low angle shot of Frankenstein running down the stairs towards the laboratory. After reaching the bottom, he runs to a giant electrical machine, the view tilted so as to give the feeling of anticipation as he holds the switch and bites his lip. Dr. Pretorius is shown from a low angle, with light splayed across his face and dark machines looming in the background giving him an almost god-like status. The next shot is a high-angle shot of Dr. Frankenstein, making it seem like he's cowering in submission, a slave to Dr. Pretorius. With

Website Report

Website Coursework Identification A new shop has recently opened and is trying to think of ways to promote their new 'Games' store. They haven't had many customers in their first few weeks and the business partners have decided to introduce ways of advertising their new shop. They have created some leaflets to hand out around the shopping centre and have a advertisement on a few of the local radios but one of the shop assistants suggested that the shop had a website. Nobody in the shop knows enough about creating websites, so I have been asked to produce a website that can advertise the store on the internet, sell some of the of the stores product and items and to try and include some small games to keep the customers interested and give them an idea about what they can buy. This will ensure that more people know about the store and it will also help sales. Analysis To produce a website for a local store, called Games, I will need a computer with internet access and an internet connection so that I can use existing websites for design ideas and web authoring software for example Microsoft Frontpage and to make hyperlinks to existing websites such as search engines. I will use Microsoft Frontpage to create and design my website and I will illustrate the pages using pictures from the Internet or use a scanner to scan images into the computer to make my website more

Welcome to mooseport INTRODUCTON: Film posters are the key factors in advertising a film because if you walk past a film poster in the street it could catch your eye and make you want to see the film. So the more interesting you make the film poster the more people will go and see the film. If you put a popular or an A list celebrity on the front of a poster people will more than likely go and see the film. It is also good to have positive reviews on a film poster as this can encourage people to see the film as well. One of the most important things on a poster is the reviews because if you look at a poster and you feel it looks boring then the review says it is a good comedy or an action packed film, it could change your views and make you more interested in the film. So I am going to use all these ideas in my denotation, connotation and genre. DENOTATION: On the film poster "Welcome to mooseport" the first thing that you can spot is the Welcome to mooseport text because it is in 3D and is in bold letters, vibrant colours and is centred on the page. The letters also stand out because it has moose horns coming out the first and last letters which makes it humorous. There is a large red ribbon behind the two main characters saying "Mooseport president". The names of the two men are placed directly above their heads saying Gene Hackman and Ray Romano in bold text. There is

Extreme Weather Event: Tropical Cyclones in Bangladesh

Extreme Weather Event: Tropical Cyclones in Bangladesh Introduction: In this report I will investigate the problems of tropical cyclones, and I will concentrate on the country of Bangladesh. I am using Bangladesh as the country for my report because it is a perfect example of what a tropical cyclone is capable of on flat land. What are tropical cyclones? A tropical cyclone is a very violent storm which is produced over warm tropical oceans which have a temperature of 270C. Below is a picture of how tropical cyclones develop. The oceans temperature is about 270C, and the arrows show that the intense heat is rising upwards. The clouds then start to form low pressure. They are like stronger versions of mid-latitude depressions. They are areas of very intense low pressure which are rotated by strong winds, cloud and heavy rain. The wind speeds can sometimes reach up to 150 km per hour. The top of tropical cyclones are usually about 1000km across. Below is a picture of a tropical cyclone breaking up. You can tell it is breaking up because the eye of the storm is no longer well developed and also, the spiral patterns of the lower clouds can be clearly seen. Below, there is another picture showing how tropical cyclones reach Bangladesh: The black arrows represent the tropical cyclones funnelling up through the ocean in the direction of Bangladesh. When they reach
