romeo and juliet who is responsible for the death of mercutio act 3 scene 1

Who is responsible for the death of Mercutio in Act 3 Scene 1? Act 3, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet is an important point in the play where Shakespeare creates a dramatic and action filled scene. I will examine this scene to see who is responsible for Mercutio's death. Act 3, Scene 1 is set in the streets of Verona and this sets the scene and creates a tense atmosphere as the Montague and the Capulet families are at war and have caused fights and violence on the streets before. At the beginning of the scene, Benvolio is trying to persuade Mercutio to go home as he is worried that if they meet the Capulets there will be a fight and they won't 'scape a brawl'. This helps to create more tension as we know what will happen if they meet with the Capulets. You could argue that if Mercutio had listened to Benvolio he wouldn't have died as he is trying to make Mercutio go home but he doesn't listen to him. Although Mercutio is always joking and makes fun of Benvolio and says 'Thou! why, thou wilt quarrel with a man that hath a hair more, or a hair less, in his beard, than thou hast: thou wilt quarrel with a man for cracking nuts', he is also up for a fight as his long speech about 'quarreling'shows. You could say that Mercutio is asking for trouble as he is so wound up and when Tybalt and the other Capulets enter and Tybalt asks for 'a word with one of you' he answers by

How Important to you consider Mercutio to be to the impact of Romeo and Juliet

How Important do you consider Mercutio to be to the impact of Romeo and Juliet? In Romeo and Juliet, we see many different and contrasting characters, each playing a specific and individual role and each creating a different and personal effect. Although Mercutio is shown and looked upon as a secondary character, "Kinsman to the Prince and friend to Romeo", I believe he plays one of the most important roles in the drama. Shakespeare has been clever in creating Mercutio, as he is not born into either of the conflicting families he acts as just a personal friend to Romeo, this means he has a freer role, and he can do and say things that Romeo and other Montague's cannot without causing too much aggravation with the enemy. Mercutio has chosen to be friend of Romeo and the Montague family, he does not dislike the Capulets and never in the play wishes to injure any one of them in any way, his main concern is for Romeo and basic peace between the two houses. It was never his objective to get anyone from either family killed. The first time we see Mercutio, is in Act 1 Scene 4, he and Romeo, together with a group of their friends and kinsmen, are on the way to a party given by their own family's enemy, Lord Capulet. Their plan is to crash the party so that Romeo will have the opportunity to see his love, Rosaline, whom they know, has been invited to the Capulet's mansion that

Mercutio is always bursting with energy and his speeches are full of extravert ideas

Mercutio is always bursting with energy and his speeches are full of extravert ideas. He is very extravagant and wild. All the attention is drawn to him, he brings out the humor in most situations. Shakespeare uses Mercutio to divert the attention to him and to enlighten the scenes causing it to be taken light heartedly. Mercutio is Romeo's best friend, he is very loyal to him and neutral to the feud . He over shadows Romeo because he is so engaging. His death launches the final tragedy snowball. He seems to take neither life nor death seriously . He is very vibrant and full of energy. He takes everything as a joke. He is constantly joking at other peoples expense but tends to bring the humor out of everything. 'You are a lover; borrow cupid's wings'. This demonstrates that he doesn't even seem to take love seriously. He is implying that Romeo should borrow Cupid's wing which indicates how sarcastic he is. 'If love be rough with you be rough with love'. This reveals how cynical he is towards love. The notion of love amuses Mercutio. He has a down to earth view of love which revolves around physical passion. His profane view of love emphasizes the strength and purity of Romeo. We are attracted to his character because he is so captivating and lively. He has a very vivid imagination. His brilliant imaginative language contrasts sharply with hat of his melancholy friend

Evaluate Shakespeares Presentation of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet Considering Language, Themes and Context

Evaluate Shakespeare's Presentation of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet Considering Language, Themes and Context Kinsmen to the prince and Romeo's best friend, Mercutio is one of the most extraordinary and complex characters in this play. His main role in the play is an entertainer and is the main source of humour in the play. He is a character full of imagination and quick wit but is presented in an outlandish way. Shakespeare presents Romeo by using a variety of sexual innuendo and bawdy language. He can often get hot-headed and dislikes people who are vain and obsessed with their looks. He is disinterested by Romeo's love life and often jokes of it, he believes the aim of relationships is only sex. However, he is the "messenger" and is the reason for the meeting of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare uses a variety of language, mostly sexual and creative techniques both linguistic and dramatic to full effects to present the character of Mercutio in the best way possible. Act one scene four is when Mercutio is first introduced to the audience, much later than many of the other major characters. We already know that Romeo is heading to the feast with his friends but the introduction of Mercutio at this point makes the audience want to find out more about him. His first words mock Romeo but in a playful way, showing that he can still criticise and ridicule, yet still remain friends.

Analyse the dramatic function of Benvolio and Mercutio in the play 'Romeo and Juliet'

Analyse the dramatic function of Benvolio and Mercutio in the play 'Romeo and Juliet' Romeo and Juliet is traditionally a love story, however it also includes elements of humour and tragedy. The characters Mercutio and Benvolio both contribute to these elements, providing not only comedy but also sensibility. Both are important as not only do they bring another layer to the story and keep the audience entertained, because they are friends with Romeo they influence him significantly, and provide the catalyst which prompts him to meet Juliet, kill Tybalt and ultimately to a certain extent kill himself (leading to Juliet killing herself). The huge contrast between the characters of Mercutio and Benvolio is also very important - one is extremely peaceful and passive, while the other is aggressive and lively. To a certain extent they almost signify Romeo's two 'extremes', both of which can be seen in various points throughout the play, as Romeo shows aspects of both Mercutio's enthusiasm and Benvolio's peace loving nature (although not to the extent of the original two characters). This role is important because it means that Mercutio and Benvolio can show the huge contrast in Romeo's character and influence him in different ways. Benvolio's prosaic function is that he acts as an objective reporter or messenger of actions to others. This is necessary as it not only informs

How is pride and honour portrayed by the characters Tybalt and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet

Pride and Honour- Mercutio and Tybalt The play I am referring to is the romantic tragedy written by William Shakespeare in the 16th century, called ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The film was then interpreted again the 1990’s by a director called Baz Luhrmann. The key characters in this story are Romeo, one of the central protagonists; Juliet is the other main character. There is Mercutio who is Romeo’s best friend and finally Tybalt a character who is an enemy to most, and always wanting a fight. The basic outline of the story is: Romeo is part of the Montague house and Juliet is part of the Capulet house, in the play these two families have an ancient and on-going feud between them. The setting is in Verona, Italy where peace does not last for long. Romeo is faced with unrequited love between himself and Rosaline, part of the Capulet house. Then Mercutio takes Romeo and a few other friends to a ball at the Capulet mansion so Mercutio can prove that Rosaline isn’t the only girl ‘available’ to Romeo. Incidentally at the party Romeo meets Juliet and falls in love with her a first sight. A short while later Romeo and Juliet get married by a priest called Friar Laurence. After the wedding Tybalt is seen provoking the Montagues and insisting to start a fight. Eventually Mercutio get stabbed and Romeo pursues his best friend’s murderer, in revenge Tybalt is killed brutally

How important do you consider Mercutio to be to the impact of Romeo and Juliet.

How important do you consider Mercutio to be to the impact of Romeo and Juliet Mercurial: Having sudden changes of mood "Thou art like one of these fellows that, when he enters the confines of a tavern, claps me his sword upon the table, and says 'God send me no need of thee!'; and by the operation of the second cup draws him on the drawer, when indeed there is no need" Mercutio is a diverse character who shows a multitude of emotions and yet this one quotation sums up his character to the full basically. He is a judgemental person, we can see this from the above quote where he accuses Benvolio of being a quick tempered quarreller, and is incredibly useful to the plot of the play. He helps the play move along much more smoothly with his quick witted remarks and sexual innuendos and even with his death assists the plays story in a huge way by making the story more enjoyable and action packed. We learn a great deal about his character in Act 1 Scene 4 where he performs the "Queen Mab" speech. As this is the first time we see him we are intrigued to learn more about him and the speech is not only a sort of biography for him it also has a large impact as it contains variable amounts of philosophical advice, for instance, "Through lovers' brains, and then they dream of love" predicts that the love that Romeo will soon feel for Juliet and the small speech he has after the

How important is Mercutio to the plot and action in the play? Romeo and Juliet.

How important is Mercutio to the plot and action in the play? Chris Kelly I believe that, although Mercutio is introduced to the play quite late and his death occurs not too long after, much of the play's action, interesting dialogue and comic relief revolves around him, making Mercutio quite a central character. It is Mercutio who inadvertently brings the two lovers together for the first time when he lures Romeo to the gathering at Lord Capulet's residence 'Nay gentle Romeo, we must have you dance' With these words Mercutio is attempting to entice Romeo into a playful and social mood and this gives us an insight into Mercutio's personality- good humoured, witty and charismatic. I think that Mercutio's main role in the play emphasises these traits and it is Shakespeare's portrayal of him as the opposite to Romeo in many ways, that adds appeal to the story. Romeo is shown as a dreamer and his views on love and his relationships are quite romantic and idealistic. Mercutio on the other hand, takes a more grounded, almost cynical view on relationships between lovers 'If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down' Although Mercutio's ideas can be seen as cold or un-romantic, his gaiety and fun-loving nature often contrast with Romeo's brooding and serious state of mind and it is in these conflicts that we are shown the

By a close examination of his use of language comment in detail on the character of Mercutio. Mercutio in Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, is one of Romeo Montague's best friends. He is a relation of Captain Prince who is the captain of the police force in Verona. Mercutio lively character with both a jovial side and a gloomy, more secretive and hidden away side. He has a duality in his personality. One moment he is a fun, joking character to be with and other times he can be a very bitter and brooding character. He has a sharp wit which he uses in the jokes that he makes. He is constantly making puns in his lines in the play and a lot of the time he is teasing or making a mockery of someone. Mercutio's language is very poetic and reflects his views on love. His language is very strong, and influential throughout his role the play. Even at the point of his death he is still using puns and using humorous language. A lot of the time when he is mocking someone it is Tybalt of the Capulet house. Tybalt is a very good dueller and Mercutio ridicules his duelling skills. In the words, 'Come sir, your 'passado'.' Mercutio is making a fool of Tybalt's sword skills even though Tybalt's skill level is superior to Mercutio's skill level. Dramatic irony is introduced here because Tybalt then appears and slays Mercutio. Mercutio tends to liven up the play with his hot headedness

Shakespeare Coursework Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet DUNCAN, MERCUTIO AND TYBALT; A COMPARISON OF THEIR DEATH SCENES

Shakespeare Coursework Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet DUNCAN, MERCUTIO AND TYBALT; A COMPARISON OF THEIR DEATH SCENES The two plays were written by William Shakespeare but they are both completely different stories. However they have one thing in common, each has a murder scene. The main character in Macbeth is Macbeth who meets some witches who tell him what will happen to him, They say 'Hail Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor' and another witch tells him 'Hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter'. This makes Macbeth think as he becomes the Thane of Cawdor which makes it seem like he will become king and the only way is to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth is the wife of Macbeth and keeps pressing him into killing Duncan, who is the King of Scotland at that time and who likes Macbeth and gives him the title of Thane of Cawdor. The murder scene starts in Act 2 scene 1. Near the end of the scene Macbeth sees a dagger in his mind drawing him towards Duncan's room. Then Lady Macbeth sounds the bell which is a signal that she has drugged the guards and it is safe for Macbeth to kill Duncan. He then goes and kills Duncan off stage. When he returns on stage he has two bloody daggers and is in a distressed state of mind. He tells Lady Macbeth about the killing and she tells him he should have left the daggers there but he can not do it so she does. He then goes to the well and
