Alternate Sources of Energy

Introduction

Energy is extremely important to us and is an inseparable part of our lives. Everyone uses energy in their daily lives. Energy is needed for so many things such as providing light, cooking food and also for transportation. Humans cannot function properly without energy and there would be chaos if there was no energy to supply our daily activities.

Currently, the majority of the energy sector depends on fossil fuels or hydrocarbons to provide energy. The pie chart on the right shows the percentage of energy in the US that comes from fossil fuels and that number is a staggering 88%.

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon. They are the world’s most important energy sources. They are the main source of electrical energy and are also used to heat homes due to the amount of energy produced when burnt. They produce steam, carbon dioxide and heat during combustion in the presence of oxygen. One major disadvantage is that if their combustion is incomplete, some of the products will be pollutants which affect the ozone layer and also are harmful to humans.

How much resources are left?

The oil reserves are diminishing at an alarming rate and scientists predict we might be out of oil by 2050. This will cause a huge disturbance in the energy industry as majority of the energy industry depends on theses oil reserve. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), there are roughly 1,300 billion barrels of proven reserves in the ground, worldwide. Half of the oil ever consumed was consumed in the past 20 years! At the current rate of 87 million barrels of oil every day, we might roughly have 41 years left. But this is just an estimate as there might be undiscovered oil reserves somewhere such as in the Poles.

Some people ask what if we just switched our energy needs to natural gas. The EIA says that we have about 6,400 trillion cubic feet of natural gas left. That is about 1,140 billion barrels of crude oil in terms of energy produced. We are consuming about 53 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) of natural gas every day. At this rate, we will finish the current reserves in about 60 years.

Another fossil fuel is coal. It is the most abundant fossil fuel in the world.        Worldwide, there is about 3,100 billion BOE of coal. We are consuming about 71 million BOE every day and so coal will last the longest at 120 years left.

Of the total energy the world is consuming presently, 240 million BOE per day, oil, natural gas and coal make up 88% of the total.  Just 12% comes from nuclear, hydro-electric and renewables like solar, wind, geothermal and other sources.

The picture above shows the amount of oil reserves left in the world as off 2009. As ...
