Since the inception in 1896 the Olympic Games has been used by nations and groups to make political statements. Discuss how the Olympic ideal has been undermined by social and political protest. In attempting to answer the question I will cover the following points firstly defining the key terms. I will then give a brief historical overview of the issue of how the Olympic Games has been used by nations and groups to make political statements.Using examples from the Olympic games I will discuss how the Olympic ideal has been undermined by social and political protest. To conclude I will review the current issue of politics and the Olympics and where I think it will go in the future. The Olympic ideal is amateurism, playing for the love of sport not for the money. This is what De Coubertin believed the Olympics should be about, also he believed the Olympics should be used to bring countries out of war with each other and bring them together. When talking about the Olympics and protests that have gone on in the Olympics, there are a few terms that come up. A non-systematic protest is a protest that is taken out by a social group. For example Tommy Smith and John Carlos with the gloved salute to represent 'Black Power' in Mexico 1968. Another term is a systematic protest which is a protest demonstrated by a nation as a whole. For example the mass boycott in Moscow 1980. This

Investigate the provisions both locally and nationally for badminton.

Local and National Provision The aim of this local and national assignment is to investigate the provisions both locally and nationally for badminton. Although badminton is not recognized as a 'cool' sport, it has been rated as one of the top ten in the country. Locally, there isn't a lot of publicity for the sport due to lack of publicity or awareness of the sport. Nationally, badminton is an Olympic sport and has been since 1992, and has been a commonwealth sport since 1966. The BISI, Badminton Into Schools Initiative, is a grassroots programme created by the national governing body, The Badminton Association of England, to get children into playing badminton. It is set to cover all four key stages of the National Curriculum which creates a clear path for staff and students to follow. There is an organisation run by Suffolk county council called Champion Coaching. They offer a course of coaching sessions that tries to teach young children the basics plus some other skills depending on the ability. * At BISI 1, children under the age of six years old get involved in a series of activities. The skills developed at this early stage are fun based and improve hand-eye co-ordination, perception and spatial awareness, providing a good introduction in to a range of sports. * BISI 2 is for children aged between seven and ten. It expands on skills learned in the first stage. The

Leadership Essay - PE

What factors contribute to make a good leader and how might your style of leadership vary to be successful when involved in individual, racket and team activities? The role of a leader can be essential. Barrow (1977) defines leadership as "the behavioral process of influencing individuals and groups towards set goals". This definition is important because it places emphasis on the vision of a leader (i.e. goals, objectives) while also highlighting the necessary interaction between the leader and group members. A team without good leadership can cause it to fail; this is the consequence of a team without organisation and a sense of direction. The approach of the leader is very important but this depends on the situation, and the group size or members. Research has been carried out which focuses on weather leaders are born with leadership qualities or if they develop through time. There is no evidence to say that leadership qualities are skills that people are born with, overall it is suggested that leadership qualities are a mixture of the both. There are no certain characteristics which need to be present in a leader, but it appears that some important factors need to be present. Some of the main factors are; sport specific skills/knowledge, interpersonal skills, peer respect, good communication skills, empathy, consistency and fairness. Leaders are most obvious if they

The Adidas story (Timeline)

Company History In 1925, in a small German village, the world got it's first taste of Adidas. It was there, in a village by the name of Herzogenaurach, located 12 miles to the north and the west of Nuremberg, that those simple three stripes were brought to life by Adidas' founder, Adolf "Adi" Dassler. Adi created Adidas after realizing the need for performance athletic shoes. Adidas began small, producing soccer and running shoes, which ironically enough are still the main products that Adidas is known for. Adidas has continued to gain momentum through the years. Many attribute this to Adidas' quality, styling and reputation. Adidas is currently the largest supplier of athletic shoes in Europe. Adidas ranks second worldwide, with their products selling in almost 200 countries. In 1994 alone, Adidas sales totalled 3 billion dollars. In late 1995, Adidas went public with its stock. It was a tremendous success and continues to trade internationally. Adidas posted an amazing 40% increase in net sales in the first half of 1997. The Dassler family has a rich heritage in shoes. Adi's brother, Rudolf went on to create the 'puma' brand in 1948 after a dispute with Adi. And, another Adi Dassler, who just happens to be the grandson of the founder of Adidas, has launched his own shoe company, 'A. D. One'. which specialises in adventure and sub-urban footwear. Adidas, always on the

How have the Olympics been used by Governments & individuals for propaganda purposes?

How have the Olympics been used by Governments & Individuals for propaganda purposes? Propaganda designers have been putting hidden messages into television commercials, news programs, magazine ads and more. These messages have been carefully designed to influence our opinions, emotions, attitudes and behavior. Their purpose is to persuade us to believe in something or to do something that we would not normally believe or do. Most importantly, these messages have been designed to benefit someone, and that someone may not be you! " The Olympic flame will not be lit with oil, but with Coca-Cola" Sour grapes from the competing host nation, Athens? Possibly. The right to host the 1996 Olympics became a race between two cities- Athens, the birthplace of the Ancient and Modern Olympics, and Atlanta, the birthplace of Coca-Cola. The International Olympic Committee voted against tradition in favour of Olympic commercialism. After all, tradition alone cannot generate income. Corporate sponsors such as Coca-Cola can. In fact, Coca-Cola invested $423 million into its ''hometown'' Games. So what can you buy for $423 million? An 11 storeys high Coke Bottle, 100 new Coke commercials and an entire Coca-Cola Olympic City. Atlanta would no sooner lay claim as hosting the most commercialised Olympic Games in history. So commercialised in fact, that the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games were
