Physiological Approach Research Method #1: Biological Methods This research method can also be divided into two smaller groups: Invasive and Non-Invasive Method. Invasive method basically involves the actual cutting and damaging of a brain, while non-invasive method revolves around scanning a fully functional brain with different devices. Invasive Method The invasive method can also be broken down into two smaller groups: lesions and ablations surgery. Ablation surgery is the process of actually removing a part of a brain, whilst lesions surgery involves damaging a part of the brain with electrodes. Most of these methods however, are done on animals, usually because of ethical issues. Surgery is still done on human brains, although they are only used to help the patients more than to experiment on them. Learning Journal Learning Style Before I can proceed with a critical evaluation of my skills development, it is imperative I reflect on and determine my predominant learning style. I have used Kolb's et al (1984) Learning Style Inventory (LSI) theory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) theory (1998) in order to evaluate my learning styles and abilities. 'Appendix 1' illustrates my results of these self-completion tests. Kolb's learning style model is illustrated in 'Appendix 2' The LSI is simply an indication to how I view myself as a learner (Kolb et al, 1984). The inventory showed I have a main orientation towards Active Experimentation (AE), illustrated in 'Appendix 3 '. The characteristics of this style suggest I focus on influencing people, am good at getting tasks accomplished and that I value having an impact and influence on the environment. The combination scores from this inventory describe my learning style more accurately since everybody's style is a combination of the four learning modes (Kolb et al, 1984). These scores, shown in the grid in 'Appendix 4', suggest I have an Accommodative learning style that emphasises AE and Concrete Experience (CE). The greatest strength of this style is explained by Kolb et al (1984) in that it involves 'doing things' by seeking involvement in new experiences and being adaptable to changing situations. After the experimental method, the psychologist can make a hypothesis from the results of the investigation. The hypothesis consists of two different variables; these variables are the Independent variable and the Dependent variable. Independent variable (IV): this is the variable that is directly manipulated by the experimenter, for example, the amount of noise in a room. Dependent variable (DV): this variable is affected by the independent variable, for example, how well the person does named tasks. The dependent variable is measured by the experimenter in order to make the hypothesis. All variables apart from the dependent variable, all other variables have to be controlled in order to make the experiment fair, and to find the results we want. This is known as Experimental control. Variables that have to be kept the same throughout the experiment are known as Confounding variables and have to be controlled in order to keep them constant. Critically examine the use of the social survey as a resach method for sociologists Social surveys can be defined as research projects which collect standardized data about large numbers of people. Alan Aldridge and Ken Levine argue that the key charcteristic of a survey is "that we collect the same information about all cases in the sample". -Method The first method I have chosen to use is Questionnaire's. I plan to do this by handing out question's to different type of ethnic groups and gathering the information and putting it into graphs my questionnaire will total of 9 question 4 open and 5 closed questions. I hope this will help all my research aims because my questions would be referring to ethnic groups and attitude towards learning and also pressure or support they get a home. The strengths of this method will be that it will be quick and easy to fill in and that it there is no cost as for I will be handing them out instead of posting them because it is expensive also as for I am handing them out in my school it is much easier as for the person would know me and speak openly, closed questions would give a quantative data. Another Strength is that they are anonymous so the person wouldn't feel embarrassed and because there is not much open questions the person wouldn't have to write a lot. The problems with this method will be that people might lie to make them-selves look good or people might not complete the questionnaire because some of the questions are open so they might not want to write, if they do this it would be harder for me to draw conclusions.
