How far do you agree with Dr Johnson that Miltons work lacks human interest?

How far do you agree with Dr Johnson that Milton's work lacks human interest? Samuel Johnson, or Dr Johnson as he was sometimes referred as, was a great English author who made enduring contributions to English literature. Being such a distinguished and renowned author, his views on literature were and still are today, stern and well-known. However, I have views both agreeing with and opposing Dr Johnson's view that Milton's work lacks human interest. Firstly, human interest strictly speaking, is about everyday people just like us, being able to relate to a story, and possibly learn something from it and put it into practise in our own lives. The epic poem Paradise Lost concerns the Christian story of the Fall of Man, while dealing with more present topics such a marriage and politics. Milton's purpose, as stated in book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men." This is a good base to start my argument on, which is that I do not agree with Dr Johnson, and believe that Milton's work does hold human interest. By involving politics and marriage into his works, this is surely of human interest, as people will be curious and inquisitive about how things worked back then, and it is therefore of human interest if people want to learn about it. Milton states the purpose of his epic poem, and it is obvious that he intended Paradise Lost to educate people about God. If anything,

How Useful Are Sources A to C To Explain Why The United States Became Involved In The War In Vietnam?

How Useful Are Sources A to C To Explain Why The United States Became Involved In The War In Vietnam? Sources A-C gives us some insight into why the USA fought and got involved in Vietnam and reveals a number of reasons about Vietnam. I shall be reviewing each source from which I have stated above. Sources A, B and C. Source A is a primary public speech made by President Johnson (Lyndon Baines Johnson) in April 1965 just one month after the start of 'Operation Rolling Thunder' according to the provenance. This is where he wanted his opinions to be spoken out and heard. In the speech Johnson is saying "We fight in Vietnam because we have a promise to keep". This is a promise regarded and made by Eisenhower when he was President in 1953. Lyndon Johnson wants all the Americans to believe what he is exactly saying and still wants to keep this promise. The Truman Doctrine was mentioned in the speech which was to come and help about communism in 1948 and Johnson wants to stick with this. In 1954, President Eisenhower and JFK started sending "advisers" as first president Kennedy would have wanted. You can see that Johnson is talking in a very religious manner and just maybe a religious when speaking out in the speech. President Johnson wants people and to reassure all Americans about the 'Domino Theory'. The domino theory was a mid-20th century foreign policy theory. If one country

Dead funny by Terry Johnson - Plot and sub-plot.

DEAD FUNNY by Terry Johnson Exploration Notes Ahmed Rashid Plot and Sub-plot The story of dead funny is based on two married, middle-aged couples and their friend Brian, who they know through the dead funny society, which honours dead comedians. This society is a common interest to them all, except consultant obstetrician and chairman of the society, Richard's wife, Eleanor, who is most proud not to be a member. During the play, they all have their different problems and a story to tell, and discover that comedy is a serious business and that tragedy is to be laughed at. The play begins in Richard and Eleanor's living room; with Richard arriving later than expected from work, boasting tickets to see Norman Wisdom, much to Eleanor's disregard and indifference. She is too busy worrying about the fact that it's Wednesday evening, which they've put aside for time spending alone together to get their sex life back on track. Their sex counsellor, Miriam, isn't helping matters. Despite Richard's pleas and attempts to avoid it, they end up taking Miriam's advice and begin to enter into some foreplay, before being interrupted by Brian with the news of Benny Hill's death, which comes as a shock to himself and to Richard but of no significance to Eleanor. They arrange a meeting in remembrance for all members of the society, on the following Wednesday. Brian leaves after a bit of

Project Aim This project builds on the in-depth analysis of a pharmaceutical giant: Johnson&Johnson (J&J) within the pharmaceutical industry sector carried out in Business Analysis Project 1. The overall aim is to critically evaluate the strategies that J&J pursues. In addition, by benchmarking key competitor companies, the strategies operating within the industry are assessed. Finally, the viable strategic options for J&J in the medium-long term future are predicted. Introduction The project is based on the systematic theory which was developed by Johnson and Scholes (1997) to explore the corporate strategies. On the base of analysis of external environment and industry forces in BAP1, this project first figures out the current situation of J&J in the broad industry environment. By using the tool of SWOT to analyze J&J's internal strategic capability, its current or possible strategies are explained and evaluated. Finally, with the prediction of the industry future development, the author pointed out the probable strategy for J&J in the long run. This article is divided into six parts. Part 1 evaluates J&J's positioning within the external business environment. Part 2 sees through the internal strategic capabilities of the company. In part 3, the author relates the company purposes and stakeholders' expectations with J&J's strategic choices. Part 4 is the current or

RFK: The Hidden Factor in the Decision-Making of the LBJ Presidency

RFK: The Hidden Factor in the Decision-Making of the LBJ Presidency "As historical figures, [Lyndon] Johnson and [Robert] Kennedy are forever entangled: one cannot fully comprehend either man without considering his relationship with the other."1 Throughout the decade of the 1960s, political titans Lyndon B. Johnson and Robert F. Kennedy battled for control of the United States government. Their mutual dislike for one another sparked heated debates and played an important part in major policy decisions of both the John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson presidential administrations. However, the relationship between LBJ and RFK made its most significant impact during Johnson's presidential reign. The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of "the Bobby factor" in decisions made during the Johnson administration. Analysis of LBJ's decision-making in three areas demonstrates the fact that RFK was a crucial factor: the passage of civil rights legislation, staff selections within the Johnson administration, and evolving policies about Vietnam. To begin with, it is necessary to understand the root of the dislike between LBJ and RFK. A brief discussion of the two men's families, educations, political experiences, and character traits indicates that conflict was inevitable. Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in 1908 and spent his childhood in the Hill Country of Texas.

How far were disagreements between MLK and Johnson the major reason for the failure of Kings Northern campaigns?

How far were disagreements between MLK and Johnson the major reason for the failure of King’s Northern campaigns? The disagreements between Martin Luther King and President Johnson was a major reason behind the failure of King’s Northern campaigns, however, this is only one reason behind why the campaigns failed. Many white Americans as well felt that the civil rights movement had become obsolete as segregation had become outlawed and voting rights guaranteed. Even so, King realized that racial equality required more than just legal change and therefore changed his attention to the social and economic problems of northern states. Beforehand, MLK had targeted his campaigns in the South, which dealt with different problems such as the segregation in education, housing and employment, while the North had different problems which black people had to face. Instead of having to face legal segregation like in the southern states, the northern states still faced racial discrimination in social and economic forms. For example, employers imposed skill tests on job applicants while the African Americans had never had to face this before and some had been educated in the worse schools in America. The scale and nature of the problems faced in the North is an underlying and a root problem, but a difficult one, as it links all of the problems which will inevitably point to failure in

WORK SUBMISSION Name: Gareth John Tanswell Student Number: 030036088 University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Institute of Geography and Earth Studies Title: Explain the nature of early-modern human geography in the light of Samuel Johnson's definition Module: GG12610 Engaging Human Geography Lecturer: Dr. Robert Mayhew Due date: 17th October 2003 (Extended due to illness) Submission date: 5th November 2003 This work is original text by Gareth Tanswell, submitted to the UWA only for assessment purposes. Signature: ____________________________________ Explain the nature of early-modern human geography in the light of the following definition: "Geography in a strict sense, signifies the knowledge of the circles of the earthly globe, and the situation of the various parts of the earth. When it is taken in a little larger sense, it includes the knowledge of the seas also; and in the largest sense of all, it extends to the various customs, habits, and governments of nations." (Samuel Johnson, A Dictionary of the English Language (1755)) The empirical discipline of Human Geography up to and during the period of Samuel Johnson's study in the 1750s was not recognized in the way it is today. Indeed, Johnson himself only classes it as part of 'the largest sense of all' within the description of the subject of Geography. The recognition of Geography as a science by Immanuel Kant

How far did the "American dream" as defined by president Kennedy and Johnson shatter between 1960 and 1968?

How far did the "American dream" as defined by president Kennedy and Johnson shatter between 1960 and 1968? The word dream is defined as "to have an ambition" in answering this question and thinking of what were the dreams of president Kennedy and Johnson I define their dreams and begin to evaluate the events from 1960 to 1968 and whether the presidents achieved their dream or was it "shattered". President Kennedy was born into a large family, he went to private schools and then went on to graduate at Harvard University. President Kennedy's dream was anti communism, economic growth and civil rights. President Johnson's dream was to educate the young, medical care and to abolish poverty. President Kennedy's dream shattered between 1960 and 1968 due to the events occurring in those years. The Bay of Pigs event was an important factor which also taken in to account when saying the "American dream" shattered .The bay of pigs event occurred in 1961 Kennedy opposed Fidel Castro's regime as there seemed to be more and more communism taking place in Cuba which threw a huge threat over America. Although Kennedy wasn't successful in his attempt to overthrow the regime, the force he had sent in were captured and few. This didn't do Kennedy any favours as he was the new president and attacking a neighbouring country with incorrect intelligence wasn't a great move. As Fidel Castro's

Family Day Out It was a hot summer's day in Florida and the Johnson family were on their way for a picnic on the beach. They were all sitting patiently in their small car. The car was red with a dent on the side that could only be seen when you were inspecting it from a close distance. The inside of the car was very musky as they were all sweating from the heat of the sun, shining down through the windows and bathing the passengers of the car. Mr Johnson was driving with much caution. He was wearing a cheap-looking shirt that Mrs Johnson had brought on sale from a local shop of hers. It was obvious that it was on sale as it had already started losing colour. At that moment in time he was wiping the salty sweat off his head with a white handkerchief that had his initials embodied onto it. Mrs Johnson was sitting in the passenger seat at the front of the car. She was a wearing a rancid green dress that would make anyone feel slightly nauseas at the sight of it. She had golden hair that was tied in ponytail with a pink ribbon. Her eyes were the colour of the sky on a cloudless day. She was on the phone at that time with someone from her office. Jennifer Johnson was sitting at the back clutching her Barbie doll in one hand and a carton of 'Yum Yum Orange Juice' in the other. She was wearing a t-shirt which had a picture of flowers embossed onto it and she had pink shorts on with
