What similarities are there between Friar Laurence and the Nurse and the functions they perform in Romeo and Juliet?

What similarities are there between Friar Laurence and the Nurse and the functions they perform in "Romeo and Juliet"? There are many similarities between the vital roles played by the Friar and the Nurse that become increasingly apparent during the play "Romeo and Juliet". These similarities mainly revolve around the very parental figures of the characters, in the way that they look after and are treated by both Romeo and Juliet. The Nurse is a wet nurse, who was brought into the Capulet household by Juliet's mother to feed Juliet. In the 16th century a wet nurse was a mother who had recently lost her own child and is still able to feed a baby; this enables the true mother to prepare for another child and to make life easier for herself. The Nurse behaves as more of a motherly figure to Juliet throughout Juliet's life than her true mother does; she calls her, "Prettiest babe" This helps to show how fond of Juliet she truly is; she then also goes on to say; "And I might live to see thee married once, I have my wish." Seeing their child get married is usually something that a mother looks forward to in life, seeing that their own daughter has grown up. The fact that the Nurse has this dream, not her mother, truly does show how much of a mother the Nurse is to her, it also shows how the Nurse does truly think of Juliet like her own daughter, this means that Juliet is a lot

COMPARE AND CONTRAST BECKETT'S PRESENTATION OF VLADIMIR AND ESTRAGON WITH THAT OF POZZO AND LUCKY IN 'WAITING FOR GODOT'

COMPARE AND CONTRAST BECKETT'S PRESENTATION OF VLADIMIR AND ESTRAGON WITH THAT OF POZZO AND LUCKY IN 'WAITING FOR GODOT' Many theories have been made about Beckett's characters and, as he himself doesn't tell us who they represent or why they are there (other than Waiting for Godot"), we have a lot of leeway to interpret the characters in as best a way as we see fit. Because the nature of Godot is at best unclear, it is impossible to determine the exact arrangement of Vladimir's and Estragon's relationship to him. Vladimir and Estragon seem to be stuck in one space, and they are never seen to be in a different setting (although they may refer to one) therefore they are almost like prisoners stuck together and they are companions, not out of choice, but out of necessity. I say this because they both agree that they are better off without one each other. "We weren't made for the same road". Another reason for why they are together arises from the existentialism of their forgetfulness. Since Estragon cannot remember anything, he needs Vladimir to tell him his history. It is as if Vladimir is establishing Estragon's identity by remembering for him. Estragon also serves as a reminder for Vladimir of all the things they have done together. Thus both men serve to remind the other of his existence. This is necessary since no one else in the play ever remembers them. "Vladimir: we

Compare and contrast Ulysses and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock in their treatment of ageing and ambition

Compare and contrast Ulysses and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock in their treatment of ageing and ambition The title of Eliot's poem initially suggests that it is not a traditional love poem at all. Eliot's choice to use the initial "J" instead of a first name implies a sense of importance, however Prufrock is a connotation of a "prude" in a "frock" which pokes fun at the pompous nature of the name and implies a subliminal other meaning to the name. Prufrock begins in the unpleasant modern world, which is comparable to "da Montefeltro" in Dante's "Inferno" being trapped in hell; however Prufrock is fixed in a lonely, isolating city. This reflects Prufrock's ambition, because he is insecure and feels as if he is trapped and cannot go anywhere. Eliot's imagery is extremely important in illustrating pieces of Prufrock's personality. He uses images of the city being bleak and frightening. The image of "the evening is spread out against the sky like a patient etherized upon a table" shows that Prufrock's view of the world is that it is bleak and empty. This also illustrates Prufrock's lack of ambition because it shows that he feels there is nothing good in the world worth trying for. Prufrock is afraid to speak to the women he sees because he thinks that he wont be able to say anything capable of making them become interested in him, and his overwhelming insecurity and fears

Local and National Provision Assignment Title: research and write about the local and National provision for your preferred sport.

Sally Yates 23rd January 2003 Local and National Provision Assignment Title: research and write about the local and National provision for your preferred sport. In this essay I am going to study tennis as my preferred sport and look at the facilities provided for it in, Suffolk and on a larger scale, the UK. I will try to explain how tennis is managed by including: How our local facilities are funded. The agencies involved in providing funding and organising grass-root developments and elite sporting opportunities. The structures and pathways involved in becoming a talented performer. Issues that face participants of all individual differences. The provision for participants with disabilities. There are many tennis courts around the area where I live, although the very closest are privately owned. The nearest public courts, are in Bury, the Abbey Gardens has 2 courts, but a £5 fee must be paid for each hour of using them. These courts are run and maintained by the local authorities. The Victory Ground and Risbygate are both clubs and require a joining fee to be paid initially, however both also have strict rules, which players must stick to. They run low level coaching sessions for all ages with a weekly amount to be paid. The cost to join these clubs wouldn't be

Compare and contrast how Donne and Marvell present death in To His Coy Mistress and Death Be Not Proud.

English Literature Coursework: Poetry Comparison Compare and contrast how Donne and Marvell present death in To His Coy Mistress and Death Be Not Proud To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and Death Be Not Proud by John Donne were written for two different purposes but the poets have used death as one of the main ideas in both poems. Death Be Not Proud was written at the time when Donne was ill so anger and contempt are very strong feelings that feature in the poem. Death Be Not Proud is in a group of poems and hymns written by Donne called the Holy Sonnets. Donne's Holy Sonnets explore his love of God and depict his doubts, fears and sense of spiritual unworthiness. Death Be Not Proud is the most prominent example because the messages and ideas Donne has written about never show him as spiritually at peace. The arguments used in Death Be Not Proud tend to defy death and are much more positive even though the poem is in fact quite negative. This may be because Donne was trying to make death seem small and insignificant because of his fear of it. The opening words of the poem "Death Be Not Proud," immediately show Donne's need to challenge death. He treats death as if he is arguing with a person and this may be to make it seem more of a mortal and something that can be beaten. Donne's first two lines are degrading death and Donne tries to show that he has no fear of what

Between 1920 and the end of 1933 the production, selling and transporting of alcohol was banned and made illegal.

Ben Hewison USA Coursework Question 2 Between 1920 and the end of 1933 the production, selling and transporting of alcohol was banned and made illegal. This was called prohibition, a year before, 1919 the Voistead Act was passed. Congressmen were the people who voted for prohibition, who had also been voted by people who supported the congressmen and prohibition, when they were promised to support it. Alcohol was seen as a cause of many problems such as medical and social issues. Supporters of prohibition, the campaigning of W.C.T.U and the A.S.L against alcohol were very successful. Prohibition was mainly brought in because of the fear of disease and death, crime, violence, drunken behaviour, neglect and poverty. In 1860 there was a big move of people westward in the USA, most as farmers and miners. Many of them were strict protestants they believed alcohol was the work of the devil. The first leaders of the temperance movement were women. They blamed alcohol for disease and death, crime, violence, drunken behaviour, neglect and for poverty. Then the W.C.T.U women Christian temperance union was set up. Their original idea was to make saloons illegal. They then aimed to get the making and selling of alcohol illegal. They took their idea to Kansas and it

Crooks and Curley's wife experience loneliness and isolation and in what way they try to deal with these difficulties.

In this essay I intend to write about why Crooks and Curley's wife experience loneliness and isolation and in what way they try to deal with these difficulties. Crooks is a nergro stable buck with a crooked spine. His eyes are described as the most noticeable feature on his face, brimming with knowledge of the injustice in life. ' His eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity.' He is also slim with a lean face, en-lined with wrinkles. His lips are also described vividly as very thin and pain-tightened. He covers up his intense eyes with large gold rimmed spectacles. Curley's wife is, of course a complete contrast, and is extremely pretty, thought sometimes try too hard. 'She had full, rouged lips and wide-spade eyes, heavily made up.' She has done her nails carefully which doesn't seem very suitable for life on a ranch. Her voice is another thing that is commented on, as have a nasal, brittle quality. Crook's personality is somewhat of a mystery. His real personality is hidden by the racism of the time. He is hurt and shocked by people's opinions towards him and so he feels the only way to get through life is to push back the same disgust to the other mean on the ranch. 'This here's my room. Nobody got any right in here by me...I ain't wanted in the bunk-house, and you ain't wanted in my room. Crooks doesn't see

Doors and Windows as Symbols of Character Thoughts and Relationships in Dom Casmurro and Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Doors and Windows as Symbols of Character Thoughts and Relationships in Dom Casmurro and Chronicle of a Death Foretold Often, a person's home is a physical representation of his or her psyche. The implication of this is that the characters of a novel are involved in a symbolic relationship with their dwellings. More specifically, the symbolic meanings of the doors and windows in that character's home provide a conduit into a character's intentions or thoughts. As said in Dom Casmurro by Bentinho Santiago "Our souls, as you know, are laid out like houses, often with windows on every side" (107). The literary material gathered through looking specifically at these aspects of a novel can then be used to strengthen the reader's perceptions of unspoken character relationships. Throughout this paper I will compare how the authors Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis and Gabriel García Márquez use certain doors and windows as a subtle and condensed form of symbolizing and revealing character relationships in their novels Dom Casmurro and Chronicle of a Death Foretold respectively. The passages in which doors and windows are mentioned in a significant way are few in number but we can see major themes of the novel compacted into just a few passages. The smallest gestures towards doors and windows on the part of any character can influence a reader's perceptions of the story in

Australia and Nepal - Worlds Apart - An examination of present and possible future energy consumption patterns in Australia and Nepal.

AUSTRALIA AND NEPAL - WORLDS APART AN EXAMINATION OF PRESENT AND POSSIBLE FUTURE ENERGY CONSUMPTION PATTERNS IN AUSTRALIA AND NEPAL Energy consumption patterns worldwide vary according to the stage of development of the country, population size, climate (geographical location of the country) and availability of energy resources. Such consumption patterns include the total amount of consumption, the ways in which the energy is used as a country and on a per capita basis, and the source of the energy. While MEDCs have an overall higher consumption than LEDCs, when LEDCs become increasingly industrialised and develop as the MEDCs did, their consumption becomes much higher because of the generally higher population base in LEDC's. Australia, an MEDC, has a high domestic consumption of 16.2GJ1 per capita per annum, whereas Nepal, an example of an LEDC, only consumes less than 1GJ2 of commercial energy (that is, energy from coal, petrol and gas - including domestic consumption) per capita per annum. Australia possesses reserves of natural gas, black and brown, uranium, and crude oil, and is 'climatically well placed'3 to exploit renewable energy sources such as hydroelectricity, solar power and wind power. The location of coal and gas reserves in Australia is illustrated in the map below, Figure 1. Figure 1: Map of Australia showing where coal and gas are located.
