"An essay on the 'Prisoner's Dilemma'."

"An essay on the 'Prisoner's Dilemma'." The problem of the prisoner's dilemma is an intriguing one. Elegant in it's simplicity at `first sight, on closer inspection it reveals a depth of complexity which can confound and confuse, leading observers first to one (seemingly) perfectly rational solution, and then subsequently to an equally rational and yet diametrically opposed one. In marked contrast to some of the equally well known yet more contrived paradigms (later we will consider Newcomb's Problem in which we pit our wits against some omnipotent being who apparently has the ability to predict our future behaviours) it is an instance of a paradoxical situation with which we can easily associate and as such is made all the more interesting. It is not hard to imagine oneself in the position of the prisoner deliberating as to the likely actions of his partner in crime (pun intended) whom, we can assume with some reasonable level of confidence, is likely to reason and act in the same fashion. Before analysis, let us first summarise the key points of the problem. You and I are prisoners guilty of some crime. We will be sentenced according to the following rules: `þ If I confess and you don't, I will go free whilst you will receive a ten year sentence `(and vice-versa). `þ If we both confess we will each receive a five year sentence. `þ If neither of us confess we will

The Tempest- The Significance of the love story between Ferdinand and Miranda in the play as a whole

Examine the significance of the love story between Miranda and Ferdinand in the play as a whole. On one level Miranda and Ferdinand can actually be seen as 'insignificant' in The Tempest, because they are such a 'clichéd' romantic couple. So their actions and speeches in the play are fairly limited, because of the simple and very 'typical', "love story" and also because they are both young and naïve and so their plot is quite static. On the other hand they can also be seen as vitally significant in The Tempest because they are one of the components that contribute to the main theme of the play, "Order", and to many of the other themes surrounding this main theme, such as the nurture/nature debate, Elizabethan hierarchy, fate, love, reconciliation etc... All these themes relate to or are the build up of the 'mother' theme, order. Prospero's plan is to restore 'order' following the injustice done to him and Miranda. To do this he needs to restore himself as duke of Milan but also bring harmony between the people with whom he has had conflict with i.e. Alonso. The love between Miranda and Ferdinand is the key to this as Ferdinand is the heir to Alonso's throne and Miranda is Prospero's heir. Therefore they can be seen as holding the theme in place because they consolidate Prospero's plan of order and reconciliation. Also, by them coming together we are reassured that the

P1/M1/D1- Factors that impact upon my learning and development.

Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development P1/M1/D1- Factors that impact upon my learning and development. P1: Learning can be defined as "The acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, or study, or by being taught." (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn, accessed March 23rd 2012) You start learning from birth and the learning process continues through formal schooling and even right through to adulthood There are however many things that can influence an individual's personal learning process, these can include the following: - Different learning styles - Time - Access to resources - Learning environment - Motivation - Responsibilities There are two main theories that are used when explaining the way an individual learns. These two theories are ‘Honey and Mumford’s learning styles theory (1985)’ and ‘Kolb’s experiential learning cycle (1984)’. Honey and Mumford’s theory states that all individuals have a specific learning style adapted to their nature, they state everyone is either an activist, reflector, theorist or a pragmatist. An activist can be defined as an individual who enjoys getting involved, likes new ideas and likes to dominate. There are both preferred and less favourable learning situations for this type of learner, less favourable situations such as working to the rules would be a factor that would impact

Opening an Arcade – Feasibility Study

Opening an Arcade - Feasibility Study I am going to carry out a feasibility study into opening an arcade. The arcade will be named "Big Money" and will be located in Glengormley, which is a small village on the outskirts of Belfast. Glengormley is a constantly growing and developing village with an expanding youthful population. An arcade with a variety of machines and snooker tables would be good for the area because it will create a small amount of employment, attract more people to Glengormley and give people somewhere to go. My reasons for choosing this are because as a young person living in Glengormley I find that there is a lack of decent places especially arcades for people aged 16 to 50 to go. I am also very interested in fruit machines and enjoy playing them as well as playing snooker and pool so I think that by opening an arcade a lot of people could benefit from it. For my investigation I intend to analyse both the practical and financial aspects of starting a new business. I will break my report up into three parts: market analysis, financial feasibility, final evaluation and conclusion. Analysing the market is one of the most important aspects to consider when starting a new business. In my market analysis section, through effective market research I hope to establish that there is a demand for this type of business. I will use both primary and secondary

Why does nationalism exert such a powerful pull? Rada Ivekovic´, a Croatian-Serbian philosopher living in exile in Paris has one explanation. She tells me that in today's world identities are in a permanent state of flux - feminist identities, ethnic identities,

I have chosen to carry out my investigation on 'racism' - The hypothesis I have set myself is 'Racism is Wrong'.

GCSE Humanities Coursework "Racism is wrong" I have chosen to carry out my investigation on 'racism'. The hypothesis I have set myself is 'Racism is Wrong'. The reason why I have chosen 'Racism' as a part of my investigation is because I have gone through racial harassment and I feel that me being able to do this coursework will let me speak my mind about racism and talk about it in more detailed manner. This means that I will be able to write down my experiences. I personally believe that racism should be eliminated through all walks of life. Be it someone's religion, skin colour or even what language they speak 'racism is wrong' I will use a variety of research methods to help me. These methods should include, Internet, books, writing letters, interviews, surveys and leaflets. The Internet is very good resource for lots of information, it is quick and easy, and the information is of both sides it is also up to date. The disadvantages in using the Internet are that you need to carefully select relevant pieces; the Internet has secondary information and can be biased. Next books, these are easy and reliable but can be biased, books have a wide range of information. But the down side to books is that the information may not be up to date. Books are a source of secondary information. Writing letters is the best way to get primary evidence, it is also up to date.

Critically assess the extent to which discriminatory practices within the criminal justice process operate against ethnic minorities

'Critically assess the extent to which discriminatory practices within the criminal justice process operate against ethnic minorities' 3.998 words Reference number: 20 Introduction Since the creation of human societies, crime has always been present, in many different forms, becoming an inevitable phenomenon for every society. At the same time, a number of questions have been raised as well. 'How can crime be prevented?', 'Who is responsible for taking an offender from initial contact with the law to final disposition?' To provide answers to the above questions, solutions to the crime problem and to shape the direction of crime policy, people turn to the criminal justice system. In contrast to crime, the criminal justice system has existed for approximately 200 years (Senna and Siegel, 2002). In order to understand the criminal justice system one should view it as the process that takes an offender through a series of decision points, beginning with arrest and concluding with his/her rehabilitation. Through the criminal justice process, key decision makers determine-based upon laws, rules, regulations and discretion-whether to maintain the offender in the system or to discharge him/her without further action. It is important at this point to mention that, the criminal justice process is divided into two categories: 1) the adversarial criminal justice system and 2) the
