Lourdes is one of the most famous centres of Christian Pilgrimage. Describe and Explain why Christians go there

A01: Lourdes is one of the most famous centres of Christian Pilgrimage. Describe and Explain why Christians go there. Pilgrimage, meaning a journey to a holy place, is a trip many people of many faiths take often. It can be compulsory or through your own choice but it is always to do with faith and traditions. Many religious people don't go on pilgrimage and this doesn't mean they are not close to God, it may be for expense problems or they don't feel it will help them. Pilgrimage is often to a place where events have happened, relevant to what pilgrims believe, in the past and can alter someone's thoughts, beliefs or physical/mental being. Many centuries ago a pilgrimage used to be a long and dangerous journey that was a challenge to a person's faith and only the fittest survived. Nowadays it is a less demanding challenge which still tests a person's faith but aims to improve it. While very few pilgrims travel by foot nowadays, most travel by air, train or some other modern public transport. There are many questions as to why people go on pilgrimages and the main reason is to regain or improve a person's faith. The pilgrim is devoting a small section of his or her life to helping those less fortunate than themselves. It may be a way to increase the strength of the pilgrims bond with God or re-build their faith. As they visit these places of pristine emotional splendour they

Describe a visit to a Christian place of pilgrimage

a) Describe a visit to a Christian place of pilgrimage One Christian place of pilgrimage is located in Lourdes in the south of France. This is thought to be the site of the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The history of Lourdes is as follows. In 1858 there was a girl called Bernadette Soubirous, 14, whose father was an ex-miller and whose family was poor. One day she was with her sister and her friend collecting firewood. When she was by the river bank at a place called Massabieille she heard a gust of wind and saw a lady standing in a niche above the cave entrance, dressed in white with a blue sash and a rosary around her arm. She knelt to the lady but when she told people of her visions they told her it was her imagination and that she should stay away from the cave. However, Bernadette continued to visit and the lady kept appearing. She told everyone in the village of her visions and some people followed her but did not share any of the visions. On the 25th February, a Thursday, she was told to drink and wash in the water from the cave. However there was only a tiny trickle of water in the cave and the tiny trickle became a stream pouring into the river. This stream now yields tens of thousands of gallons of water every day. On 2nd March she told Bernadette to build a chapel at the cave and to have processions there often. However, the priest did not

Pilgrimage. In Jerusalem just like Lourdes there are many activities pilgrims take part in.

A02 - Pilgrimage (Kieron Curran) When people go on pilgrimage they go for guidance and following the footsteps of Jesus and also to get closer to God or maybe to strengthen their faith further. The hopes that pilgrims have when the go on pilgrimage are to be mentally or physically cleansed and every once in a while a miracles happen like someone goes on pilgrimage with cancer and when they come back the cancer has gone. Most people go to get spiritual healing for example they might go to pray for family or friends, if some one is ill or sick, if some one has died or if the pilgrim is going through a low point in their life. The second activity is visiting the baths. This could affect a pilgrim's life by having the feeling with them that they are closer to God after getting out the bath and so, it could change them by getting more encourage to go to Church more often if they are not already doing that and getting the courage to take that step to take the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Because when they get into the bath it is like them taking an act of penance. In Lourdes the light procession, which could make the pilgrim feel special inside as the hold the Jesus the light of the world in their hand and when they get home they could feel more confident into meeting and talk to new people because in the procession you just don't pray all along the way but you also get the

AO1: Pilgrimage by Sanamdeep Aujla Explain the religious activities that Christians take part in when they go in pilgrimage? Refer to two places of pilgrimage in your answer? Pilgrimage is defined to a journey to a holy and sacred place where people show their devotion to their faith. For this assignment, I will do a great deal of research from different sources on Christian pilgrimage ,allowing me to examine the different religious activities that Christians take part in when they go on a pilgrimage. Firstly, I will discuss a brief history upon Christian pilgrimage. The idea behind pilgrimage has been thought of in many different ways throughout time, but all that Christians know of is that pilgrimage originated from ancient Rome. Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine found a Cross which was thought by Christians ,as the true cross upon which Jesus was crucified. Lourdes is a French town at the front of the Pyrenees and has become one of the most important places for Christian pilgrimages. During the eighteenth century, a French girl named Bernadette had a series of visions within this town. She had eighteen apparitions in total, and it was during the ninth that the vision revealed herself to the Virgin Mary. During this vision Mary told Bernadette to dig in a specific site ,where Bernadette would discover a spring. A spring of water began to flow

Christian places of Pilgrimage - The room of the last supper

Describe a visit to a Christian place of pilgrimage Jerusalem is a city with many historical and sacred sites that are of great importance especially for the Christian religion. Christian pilgrims have different views on how it became a place of pilgrimage. Some say that it is after the death of Jesus while some people say that it is when Christians felt that they wanted to know more about the Christian religion and take it into historical account. Pilgrimage is the travelling or journeying of a believer in a faith or the follower of a religious sect to a sacred place within or outside the context of his religion. Pilgrimage is a very popular form of worship in all religions and those who go on pilgrimages are called pilgrims. Many religions go on pilgrimage but we are going to centralise this discussion on the holy sites in Jerusalem. This is because this is where Jesus was arrested, crucified and where he was resurrected. These interesting sites include.... The room of the last supper This place is also called the cenacle of the upper chamber room in which the Eucharist is based on. Seven weeks after the passion the Holy Spirit appeared to the disciple and this was the origin of the Pentecost, which is recorded in the New Testament in the book of acts of the apostle. Almost every turning in the east Jerusalem reveals some significant site of religious or historical

Christian Pilgrimage - Canterbury and Lourdes

ANGELA BENTLEY PILGRIMAGE a State the names of two places of Christian Pilgrimage. There are numerous places of spiritual significance where some Christians make pilgrimages to, these could include, Canterbury Cathedral in England, and Lourdes in France. b Explain why these two places are important for Christians. These two places are important for Christians because of the events that are said to have taken place there. Ever since the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in the Cathedral in 1170, Canterbury has attracted thousands of pilgrims. The Cathedral is a holy place of pilgrimage, founded by St Augustine for the worship of Almighty God and the honour of Christ our Saviour. Although the town of Lourdes has just 17000 inhabitants, 5 million visitors go there each year. This is due to a vision seen by Bernadette Soubirous on numerous occasions, although the first visitation is said to be on February 11th 1858. Apparently Bernadette kept asking the lady in white who she was, and eventually she replied "Que soy era Immaculada Conceptiou" - I am The Immaculate Conception, this confirmed that these visions were images of the Virgin Mary. Lourdes is the most popular place of pilgrimage in Europe and there have been numerous miraculous healings reported related to the shrine and especially the water of the spring. 2. How and why might the life of a Christian be

In this coursework I am going to talk about a Christian place of pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage Pilgrimage is a journey to a distant sacred goal, it is found in all the great religions of the world. It is a journey both outwards to places and for spiritual improvement. It can express past evils or the search for a good future. The pilgrim may pursue spiritual need in the sacred sites of a particular faith or seek a miracle through God or a saint. Throughout the world pilgrims move invisibly in huge numbers among the tourists of today. One way to fully experience the sacredness of the universe is to become a pilgrim. Since the past time people have sought out places of revelation in the landscape, on holy mountains, by curative springs, at oracular caverns and the shrines of saints. Pilgrimage is currently a popular term used to refer to almost any excursion to a place that has special meaning. The ritual is different for each religion. But generally people seek out the holy places important to them, perform rituals, and pray for themselves, others, or situations. What pilgrims do at the shrines is sit and meditates on the saints. Pilgrims pray to feel their presence, open our hearts, and receive their sacred love. In this way they directly experience love. Pilgrimage is one way to search for the deeper meaning and purpose in our lives and to try and get a deeper and spiritual understanding of god. Through pilgrimage the spirit is renewed and the general

Explain the part pilgrimage plays in the religious life of Christians. In your answer, include reference to the two places of pilgrimage you have mentioned.

Question 2 Explain the part pilgrimage plays in the religious life of Christians. In your answer, include reference to the two places of pilgrimage you have mentioned. Many Christians see pilgrimage as an important part in their spiritual growth and development. Some Christians also believe that pilgrimage may help them in their post-mortal journey to heaven. Christians go to church to praise the lord and give thanks to God. Serious Christians also pray at home, sometimes before and after meals, and sometimes at bedtime. The first place of pilgrimage that I have mentioned, Lourdes, attracts millions of pilgrims each year. This is because the spring that Bernadette dug in the presence of the Immaculate Conception is seen as a very important spiritual place in the world. Lourdes is also very important to Christians because Our Lady herself went there in the form of seventeen visions to Bernadette Soubirous. Some of the pilgrims that visit Lourdes are very ill people, some of whom are dying. These people may have asked able people to take them to Lourdes as a last wish. Many people believe that a dying person who visits Lourdes whilst they are ill will have a much quicker and safer journey to heaven. Others who are terminally ill might want to bathe in water that has been taken from the spring. At the baths, each person is stripped down to his or her under-garments. They

Pilgrimage. When pilgrims get to Lourdes they engage in various activities

Pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place. The place is usually where events have happened in the past that are relevant or important to what the pilgrim believes in or has faith in. People go on pilgrimages for various reasons. These reasons include things like seeking spiritual healing or discipline, increasing their faith; feel closer to God, just to experience what a pilgrimage feels like. In places like Lourdes, which is situated in the South of France, many people visit there because they believe that miracles really do occur there. Lourdes came about in a period of six months when a young girl called Bernadette(now a saint) had a number of visions of the Virgin Mary in a grotto near her home in Lourdes. Because of this Lourdes is known as a Marian Shrine. The Pope later declared Lourdes authentic and it was said that spring revealed to Bernadette by the Virgin Mary had miraculous powers capable of healing. This in now why so many people are flocking to Lourdes to seek their own physical healings. When pilgrims get to Lourdes they engage in various activities. Most of them visit the grotto(which is where Bernadette saw her visions of Mary) and pray using rosaries and candlelights while they wait and expect a miracle from God. Some pilgrims visit the pool which is fed by the spring flowing from the grotto area and bathe in this water as an act of faith.

Mark Cranshaw 1P RE Coursework A01 Pilgrimage is a journey to sacred places that are inspired by religious devotion. The place that is visited is usually where events have happened in the past that are relevant or important to what the pilgrim believes. Pilgrimage is an ancient custom which has changed over many years. It used to be a long and dangerous journey, but now many treat it like a holiday. A very early example of a pilgrim was Hsüan Tsang, a 7th century Chinese Buddhist; he travelled 65,000 km/ 40,000 mi during his 16 year pilgrimage through India and China. Here is a picture of Hsüan Tsang, returning home from India: Another old pilgrimage tradition which happened in the 1400's was a pilgrimage from London to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. He was an English priest and politician who lived in the era of Henry II. He was appointed archbishop of Canterbury; but interests in the church conflicted with interests to do with the crown and Thomas Becket was assassinated in 1170. He was declared a saint, and his shrine became the busiest centre of pilgrimage in England. Here is an image of Thomas Becket: There are several different types of pilgrimage. Some people used to go on pilgrimages as punishment for a crime. They did this to gain forgiveness and remorse. The journeys were often very long, and hard. Some carried armour to make it harder for
