The Reality of War

The Reality of War Before the 1st world war a lot of poems were written to glamorize the true picture of war. I feel that the Battle of Blenheim tries to subtly depict the true picture of a bloody, horrific and terrifying war. When war broke out and innocent young men in the prime of their life were sent to die, to see their friends bodies torn apart in front of them it gave them the will to write poems about the true reality of war. This gave people a different way of thinking about an old saying ''Dulce et Decorum est''. My essay is about the contrast between the great and honorable vision and the terrifying and gruesome vision of war. In the First World War there was a soldier named Wilfred Owen, he wrote many poems on the shocking truth of war. One of them is named Futility, this is my favorite. He also wrote a poem called Anthem for Doomed Youth, both of these poems were written in the war and were written to shock. They are very graphic and create images in your mind of despair, sadness and chaos. The other poem I have red is the Battle of Blenheim, this comes across slightly more subtle and for me gets the anti-war message of war across because this creates a pleasant image of an old man on a fine summers evening in the garden with his grandson asking innocent but revealing questions. It does, however put over a different message of a battle which was fought by the

Which country is most responsible for the Cuban missile crisis?

Which country is most responsible for the Cuban missile crisis? Cuba is the least to blame for causing this crisis, though it still did have a part in causing the crisis due to some of its hostile actions. Firstly, it nationalized all American businesses in Cuba by taking over their businesses for the country instead to receive its profits. Also, it was responsible on behalf of asking for weapons from USSR and not only did it allow shipment of Soviet soldiers, mechanics and defensive weaponry but it also allowed the presence of offensive nuclear weapons in the country. On the other hand, most of Cuba/Castro's actions are justified. The only reason he nationalized those businesses was because after the corrupt dictator Batista was removed from power, he visited USA to ask them to trade with them and convince them that he was not anti-American, but instead USA showed him a cold shoulder and ignored him. Since the USA were not helpful and were instead suspicious of him, he still needed to make some profit for Cuba in order to avoid economic depression, thus he nationalized these companies. Then USA overreacted to the situation instead of renegotiating a new deal and placed an embargo on Cuba by breaking all business ties with Cuba. This now left Cuba with only one option, to find another trading partner, and USSR was interested. This made USA more suspicious of Castro's

Examine the concepts of normality and abnormality

Lili Mae Matthews Examine the Concepts of Normality and Abnormality Having a mental illness may show a considerable difference in a person’s behaviour. This may be classed as abnormal behaviour. However, it is very different to distinguish the difference of abnormality due to eccentricity or a different cultural or religious background, a different upbringing, the period of time in which you were born, age and gender are all limiting factor in the diagnosis of a mental disorder. There isn’t an exact point in which a mental health professional can rely on in the diagnosis of a disorder. We cannot put a pinpoint on which you become mentally ill because of the limitations, the fact that is that not every person’s abnormal behaviour will be down to a mental disease. There are different kinds of abnormal conditions. Absolute occur the same way with the same frequency in every culture. Universal occur in all cultures but in different frequencies. Relative, are unique to a particular culture. There are particular disorders that are more common in women than men. Women are more likely to suffer from depression and specific phobias while men are more likely to suffer from alcoholism. Racial discrimination plays a very big part in the misdiagnosis of mental illness. Afro-Caribbean immigrants are 7 times more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia in the UK than a

Child Abuse An Issue Never Forgotten According to the Every Child Matters Education Fund, everyday nearly five children die from abuse and neglect in America (qtd. in National Statistics on Child Abuse). This is a disturbing statistic to try to comprehend. The fact that a child is being disregarded or, worse, beaten by a loved one is a hard image to swallow. No child should be thrust into a situation where they pray they can leave alive much less unharmed. Howeve,r children all over the country have to try to survive these severe conditions of neglect and abuse only to have it haunt them for the rest of their lives. A child is precious thing to behold and not one should ever be battered or mistreated. More eyes need to be opened to the issue of child abuse and the effects it has on a child's future life. It hurts to know that while a father comforts you with one hand he could easily strangle you with the other. As a victim of child abuse, it is not that hard to imagine this pain. It's this mixed feeling of betrayal and fear that will forever scar a person's inner psyche. To look in the mirror and see a bruised eye, only to be reminded of your father's love for his daughter is something no child should experience, and no child can forget. A simple act of discipline can turn into a horrible near death experience. Physical child abuse is not ever an issue to be taken

The treaty of Versailles was shaped by French determination to exact revenge and to ensure Germanys permanent weakness How far do you agree with this view?

'The treaty of Versailles was shaped by French determination to exact revenge and to ensure Germanys permanent weakness' How far do you agree with this view? World war one, one of the most destructive wars the world has ever faced, famous for trench warfare and along with it the unrelenting bombardment of the battlefields tearing countries and countless soldiers apart- this was in clearly a recipe for destruction. Inevitably, France, being the epicentre of the war along the western front, was ruined ruined; cities, towns, farms were destroyed in their thousands! From this, clearly France would be beyond hostile towards Germany as they were left with a destroyed landscape, and an unbelievably high death toll- understandably revenge was in just about every sane Frenchman's sights, especially when they saw a virtually untouched Germany. Was the treaty of Versailles shaped by French determination to exact revenge and to ensure Germanys permanent weakness? Or rather was it far more liberal than what the French wanted as the other nations in the big 3 had more input into the final draft of the treaty? It is extremely important when we look at the final draft of the treaty of Versailles to judge who had to the most influential role in the final draft of the treaty by first looking at the aims of the big three- Clemenceau, Wilson and Lloyd George. Clemenceau and Wilson polarised

Discuss the role of neural and/or hormonal mechanisms in aggression

Discuss the role of neural and/or hormonal mechanisms in aggression The role of hormonal mechanisms play a significant role in aggression as high levels of testosterone and low levels of cortisol have been proven to influence aggressive behaviour. Testosterone has been thought to act on areas of the brain which control aggression from young childhood onwards because it lowers serotonin in the brain which leads to aggression as serotonin inhabits responses to environmental stimuli. Lindman et al (1987) found aggressive behaviour in drunken males positively correlated with testosterone levels. Cortisol is the other hormonal mechanism which inhibits other hormones such as testosterone. High levels of this are positive sign for the human body as it in effectively causes a reduction in aggression. However low levels are associated with increased aggression, Vikuuen (1985) found low levels of cortisol in habitual violent offenders. As well as Hormonal mechanisms there are neural mechanisms that are associated with aggression. Low levels of serotonin are associated with increased susceptibility to impulse behaviour, aggression and violent suicide. Tamed animals have higher levels of serotonin than their wild ancestors. House cats are often beat up by wild cats due to their reduced aggression. High levels of dopamine are also associated with aggression. The link is not as well

Describe four physical and four behavioral Indicators of abuse

Unit 5 P1 Danielle Wheatland Describe four physical and four behavioral Indicators of abuse. There are many different types of abuse such as mental, physical, sexual, neglect and emotional. Abuse can affect children in many different ways. Abuse can start from any age in a child’s life and can carry on for many years until the child has courage in telling someone or someone finds out about the abuse going on. As a child care practitioner we must not judge the word ‘beat’ for example if a child comes up to you and says ‘mummy and daddy beat me’ and the word has different meanings in different cultures for example it may mean a smack or little tap. The main definition of abuse would be referred to four main categories such as physical sexual emotional and neglect abuse. In the UK smacking is an issue as some parents are still aloud to smack their child by law. In Wales one in five secondary schools has had issues of children being abused or neglected during childhood. The NSPCC have found out more than 2,200 children are being beaten up, hit with objects or serious neglect. The word ‘beat’ means different thing in other cultures for example ‘smack’ in Britain most people would think of serious matters such as a forceful hit and abuse. You must never jump to conclusions when

Of Mice and Men is filled with irony

Of Mice and Men is filled with irony, in fact, the sixth word in the book is Soledad which in Spanish means loneliness! Of Mice and Men is widely known for its powerful ending and fabulous descriptions of the lives of the migrant workers during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Of Mice and Men is about two men's unlikely attempt at the American dream which is shared by George Milton and Lennie Small. Everyone they met doubted their dream. John Steinbeck uses irony to develop the theme no one wants to be alone as they pursue their dream or in general. Steinbeck develops this theme through the ironic portrayal of George and Lennie, Candy and his dog, and Curley's wife and Curley. George Milton and Lennie Small are the main characters in Of Mice and Men. George is a small, wiry, quick-witted man who travels with Lennie, a large lumbering child-like migrant worker. George and Lennie's relationship is somewhat awkward because a big man usually isn't best friends with a small man, but at the same time, it makes sense because Lennie suffers from mental retardation and needs a caretaker. Regardless of his disabilities, George stays with Lennie and they pursue their dream together, the dream to own their own farm. Throughout the book they meet many people that believe that they can achieve this dream and want to join them and some people that have their doubts. People that have
