Explore the ways Shakespeare creates tension in the opening two scenes of Hamlet

Explore the ways Shakespeare creates tension in the opening two scenes Shakespeare creates a lot of tension in the opening two scenes, by starting act one, scene one, with short sentences and questions, such as, "Who's there?" So the audience can tell that the characters are feeling edgy about something at the start. These short sentences carry on until line 20, it gets the audience involved from the start, you're straight into the play, and there is no big introduction. It begins the play at midnight when it is very cold, which it itself is very spooky and is like the witching hour "Tis now struck twelve." "Tis bitter cold." The characters start to talk about a ghost that they've seen, and you can sense fear from them "touching this dreaded sight twice seen of us" Once the ghost enters there is a lot of tension, especially as the ghost doesn't speak, which makes it even more spooky. The ghost creates mystery for the audience. The ghost says nothing despite the valiant efforts on the parts of Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo. Suspense is created when the audience are ignorant as to the purpose of the ghost. The tension carries on all the way through the first scene. With the audience being able to see the ghost, but not being able to hear it. In scene two there is a lot of tension going on between the family. Hamlet dislikes his mother and claudius. Claudius is the

Shay's Rebellion

Olha Kolesnykova APUSH-3rd 10-8-08 For the critics of republicanism, Shay's Rebellion was a chilling vision of the future. Describe the economic troubles, many of which first developed in the revolution that subsistence farmers (along with others) in the post-revolutionary era faced. With regards to Shay's Rebellion, discuss how it could be interpreted as proof of the fallibility of republicanism. In the post war era many economic troubles developed. The war debt- was agreed to in the Treaty of Paris in 1783 had to be paid back to the English. The debt was large a hefty sum of 35 million (much of it needed to be paid to French and Dutch bankers). Under the republican system, and the newly ratified Articles of Confederation the Congress of the new nation couldn't tax. Congress had to borrow money- and as exhibited later on borrowing is a very unfortunate concept. Therefore, the states had to have the willingness to meet their financial obligations. The states needed to find way to get all the money, so they started raising taxes. Again, the states borrowed money from merchants and investors. The people complained about the taxes, and tried to pay in paper money- which the government wouldn't accept because the value fluctuated all the time. Other issues also added to the financial crisis. The English, Dutch or French wouldn't trade with the Americans- this brought

In 'A Modest Proposal', Swift proposes that eating the children of the poor is the answer to Ireland's economic problems.

A Modest Proposal - Jonathan Harvey The Eighteenth Century was an extremely difficult time for the country of Ireland. Not only were the English lords ruling the nation, but they were also taxing the Irish out of all of their income. Due to these harsh taxes and other laws passed from distant England, Ireland was quickly becoming a land of the starving. By 1729, something had to be done, regardless of how drastic it was. Jonathan Swift's 'A Modest Proposal' is a satirical essay that disregards all humanity and morality for the sake of economic gain. In 'A Modest Proposal', Swift proposes that eating the children of the poor is the answer to Ireland's economic problems. Throughout the essay Swift says that he has thoroughly researched this idea. He even goes so far as to give calculations about how many children Ireland could support a year. In this essay we will observe three passages where Swift uses satire to point out the problems facing Ireland and how to resolve these problems. The first situation that Swift creates where moral order is confused is when he describes what delicious meals the children would make. He says that his American friend has told him that a year old child makes a delicious dish, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled. By listing actual dishes people could serve with children, Swift makes it appear that eating infants is practiced in

Discuss One Production You Have Seen Where the Performers Have Made a Positive Impact on the Audience - Relate to the Performances of Two Performers. The play I am going to discuss is "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I saw this at the Lowry Centre in Manchester. The cast consisted of 8 actors, 2 of which particularly stood out to me and captivated the audience for the duration of the performance. The play is based in Maycomb County, a small town in the Southern states of the U.S. in the 20th Century. It is a very racially prejudice society and one of the biggest underlying themes in the play is racism. One of the characters I am going to be discussing is Atticus Finch, and elderly lawyer and a lifelong citizen of Maycomb County. The whole play is based on Atticus's court case, which happens to be defending a Black man - Tom Robinson, who has been accused of raping a white girl. The other actor who particularly stood out to me was Scout Finch, Atticus's daughter. In this essay I will be discussing these actors and how they impressed me throughout the play. The first actor I am referring to is Scout Finch, in the first scene. The stage is empty apart from an old wagon tipped up in the corner and gravel littering the floor. The whole cast comes on stage and starts singing gospel music. This really sets an atmosphere, and really makes you feel like you are there, with

Personal experience of violence.

[image001.gif] My assignment is based on something that changed my life or had an impact on my life in some sort of way. There are a few things that have changed my life but overall it has been very sheltered. For example I go to a public school, which is very strict with behavior and other things. The school acts very seriously upon drugs and crime to help prevent children from having bad experiences with these things. So this brings me to a decision I am going to have to make about what my assignment should be about. It needs to be something meaningful, and not just a little thing that shouldn't really have an effect on anyone. Up until last year I used to watch adverts or programs about abuse and not think anything else but "Oh!", "That's very bad!", and "if I caught him alone...!". But last year on the way to school, something had a huge impact on me mentally. I was going the usual way to school from my house on what seemed like a perfectly ordinary morning, but little did I know that something would happen that day that I would remember for the rest of my life. I guess it was a form of road rage - or was it abuse? Not another man/woman hitting the same gender, but a big six foot, strapping bloke hitting an innocent woman who had simply made a mistake whilst driving to work, or wherever she might have been going. What actually happened not only

Imagine you are Hari representing the villagers. Write a speech of protest to the Chief Minister against Industrialization in the village of Thul.

Hari's speech to Chief Minister Imagine you are Hari representing the villagers. Write a speech of protest to the Chief Minister against Industrialization in the village of Thul. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Today I have come before you, to speak of a great injustice. The city of Bombay is a mess. Nobody who has truly seen Bombay can deny this. During the monsoon season, when the streets flood with dirty water, disease and contamination reign. During the dry season, the city must go long periods of time without rain. The heat kills and ravages. What if you could find yourself a small portion of paradise? What if you could live there in accord with the weather, and not have to worry about the problems that living in Bombay brings? Just think of sheltering from the sun perfectly cool beneath a palm-tree, instead of having to move your household into the rafters of your flat to escape the rainfall. Bombay is an industrial mess and sadly cannot be restored to what it once was. The toxic roots of factories and industrialization have plagued the city and abolished all hope of Bombay returning to the glory that it was. So why am I telling you this if there's nothing you can do? What's the point in crying over spilt milk? Whilst Bombay may already have fallen victim to the juggernaut of modernization, other paradises are at risk! Would you rather live in a paradise or a

Investigate how the concentration of hydrochloric acid effects the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate.

Abdullah javed 10w/k science coursework Rates of reaction Aim: To investigate how the concentration of hydrochloric acid effects the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate. Introduction: I will be conducting an experiment on the rate of reaction for my gcse coursework. I will be doing this coursework for a period of two weeks. We will be reacting sodium thiosulphate with hydrochloric acid. And i will be investigating how the concentration of hydrochloric acid effects the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate. When sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid are mixed, A yellow precept of sulphur is produced the solution becomes increasingly difficult to see through as more and more sulphur is formed. Prediction: I think that as the amount of sodium thiosulphate is decreased and the volume of water is increased, the reaction time between it and hydrochloric acid will increase. This is because when concentration of a substance increased, it reacts a lot quicker due to there being more particles that want to react with each other. Reactions can only happen when the reactant particles collide, but most collisions are not unsuccessful in forming product molecules. Water has been introduced in this experiment to vary the concentration .If there is more water in the experiment, the less
