What is the internet?

Internet What is the Internet? The Internet is the large group of millions of computers around the world that are all connected to one another. The Internet is one of the most important changes that has happened to the way we live and work in the last fifteen years. It began life in a small American laboratory; its inventors could never have foreseen how it would develop over time. The Internet now spans the world, connecting billions of people in their everyday lives. How do you connect to it? These computers are connected by phone lines, fiber optic lines, coaxial cable, satellites, and wireless connections. When you log on to the Internet you are given access to many of the other computers that are connected around the world. Some common ways of connecting to the Internet include: * Internet service provider (ISP) by modem * Internet ready cable * digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service providers are a company that provides internet access. For a monthly fee they will offer you a broadband connection to the internet, without this service most individuals and businesses would not be able to use the internet. Depending on this type of connection, a computer may be permanently connected to their ISP or will dial up over the phone line when the computer needs access to the Internet. Often, they also provide other services as well such

Email and Email Security.

Email Email, Or Electronic Mail, Is Becoming More And More Popular As People Learn To Communicate Again With Written Words. For Many Purposes It Is Superior To A Phone Call Because You Don't Have To Catch The Person In And You Can Get Straight To The Point. No Time Is Wasted On Casual Conversation. It Also Leaves A Written Record To Refer Back To For A Response Or If You Forget Who Said What. Email Is Superior To The Traditional Office Memo Because It Uses No Paper (Save The Trees!!) And It Can Be Sent To A Whole List Of People Instantly. Purpose: Transmitting Messages Between Computer Users Major Advantage: Speed For Communication And The Lower Cost . Major Disadvantage: You Don't Know If The Receiver Actually Reads It, Though You Can Find Out If They Received It. Of Course In A Phone Conversation You Don't Really Know If The Person Is Actually Listening Either! With No Body Language Or Vocal Intonations It Is Difficult To Convey The Emotional Tone You Want. Introduction to Email Security Today email is so widely used that it has become the default means of communication where the correspondents feel that they can discuss matters that can be kept between them. We analyze below how this might be a dangerous illusion, especially when discussing matters with legal, business or political content and I but may comment to use email safety . General Paper: What Use Is The Internet?

Philippe Francois Friday 4th March '03 General Paper: What Use Is The Internet? Lower 6 - Business2 Ms. Boodan The internet is the world's largest, globally inter-linked network of computer systems. It allows users to transmit and receive data digitally, across the telephone network system. This concept of data transmission on a world-wide scale, has opened the doors to a vast range of possibilities for this data sharing capability. Initially, the internet was developed under a government funded project called ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency), in late 1962, directed by members of MIT who saw great potential in the ability to transmit data across a global network system i.e. the telephone system. The intention was mainly to design a system that would enable the sharing of information on research and development on scientific and military aspects. In addition, it was to provide an alternative communication network, which could be re-directed across a number of alternative routes, in the event that a site was destroyed by nuclear attack. Since the internet's first stages of development, today, it is still used as a data sharing agent. Whilst in the past, it was used primarily used by government specialist and large organizations, it can now be found in use, in the homes of more than 500 million households worldwide, according to estimated statistics at Telecom

Hardware and Software -IT

Hardware The system requires certain pieces of hardware in order to run properly. These include the following areas of hardware: I have used Excel to create the project. For the actual system for the party planners I would specify the use of a more up-to-date PC system such as a dell vostro 1525 with an Intel core i5 processor system running Windows 7 as the quality of the output will be better and the planner may need to run several versions at the same time. A monitor is required for the system as an output device to display images. CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors are big but have strong screens with glass screens that don't get damaged easily. However, they make quite a lot of heat and noise. They also take up a lot of space due to their size. The more common monitors are the thin TFT (Thin Film Transistors) monitors that take up less space as they are smaller than CRT monitors. They also make less heat and noise than them, but these monitors are more sensitive and a sharp object can permanently damage the screen. Even the colour and contrast isn't as good, which has dull pictures. For JJ party Planners, the best monitor would be a TFT because it takes up less space and makes less noise. The sales assistants won't damage the screens or need high quality pictures so a TFT monitor would be fine as it doesn't cost too much now. The system is more than fast enough,

Ict and the law

ICT and the Law In this piece of coursework I will be talking about various laws and how they affect myself, Mr James (An Adult with a disability) and Mr Hulse (An adult in employment. There are 4 laws I will be concentrating on: * The DPA * Health and Safety * The CMA * The Copyright, Design and Patents Act DPA (1998) The DPA (Data Protection Act) is a law which enforces how data is collected and stored. It stops it from being misused and transported to countries who do not have similar protection of data. For instance, if a school had the personal data of a student and sold it to someone or gave it away, or pinned it up on a notice board or a wall somewhere, they would be prosecuted by the DPA for misuse of data. The DPA ensures all personal information digitally stored is not used in any other way than necessary, and are not viewed and changed when there is no need to. How would you feel if you applied for a job and someone had changed your GCSE results to a very poor standard, making it near impossible to get the job, or if someone had made all the results really good, you would be given a position and expected to do more work than you can possibly accomplish. What if someone had added one or more offences to your criminal record? This is why the DPA exists. This law covers both digital and written information which is covered from the moment it is created until

3D - The impact of ICT on the local community Introduction I live in the borough of Waltham Forest. Waltham Forest is quite an advanced community in terms of technology. Technology is used for various things, whether to make them more efficient or to provide a better service. Walthamstow is a small town located within Waltham Forest, which also harbours Leyton and Leytonstone. It is located to the North East of London and bordered to the north by Chingford, to the south by Leyton and Leytonstone, to the east by Epping Forest, to the west by Tottenham and the River Lea valley. Walthamstow is identified by the London plan as one of the 35 major centres in Greater London. Walthamstow's market is one of the longest daily outdoor markets in Europe and dominates the High Street. There are various shops lined along the high street with some high-end chain brands to several individually opened stalls that specialise in food, fabrics, household goods and other such stuff. The Mall in Selborne Walk is the largest place in the area to find lots of different brand shops selling high-end goods manufactured and produced to the mass public via corporations instead of individual businesses. The individual businesses tend to be all located outside on the high street. The central library has also recently been refurbished and modernised. It was expanded from 2006-2007 to hold a wider range

The Use of ICT in the Wider World.

AO4 The Use of ICT in the Wider World ICT (Information Computer Technology) is used throughout the world in many different and interesting ways. In fact without ICT the world would not be as it is now. I am going to research the many ways that ICT is used throughout the world. Computers in Shops Not all shops use ICT but the ones that do find every day things such as stock control very quick and easy. * Bar codes are the patterns of thin black lines you find on most products. These bar codes are then scanned by a computer to which will then give the price of the product and this can also be used for stock control. The computer then reduces the recorded stock of the product. And when the stocks fall below a pre-set amount called the 're-order level'. An order for more stock is automatically sent to the shops warehouse or supplier. This type of system will be mainly used in supermarkets. But smaller shops might have a smaller simplified version of this. * Debit payment is where you pay for the items that you have purchased with a debit of credit card instead of cash. The customer will hand over their credit or debit card, it is then swiped, the bank will be contacted, the customer has to sign a receipt to verify that it is their card and the money will be deducted from their bank account. Or in the case of a credit card it will be added to their account ready for them to

Why Do You Think Online Shopping Is Becoming More Popular?

Why Do You Think Online Shopping Is Becoming More Popular? Table of Contents Introduction 2 Online Shopping-Why so Popular? 2 Pros and Cons 2 The Experience 3 Summary 3 Bibliography 4 Introduction The first web browser was created by a man named Tim Berners-Lee in 1991 and since then the concept of buying goods online has been around. Online shopping has massively changed the way consumers shop in the last ten years, the ability to shop online has been around since 1994 when 'Pizza Hut' opened their first online store. Shops such as 'eBay' and 'Amazon' first appeared on the World Wide Web in 1995 and 1996-however these sites were very different to how they are today. Online shopping has seen an extremely high increase in customers over the years; there are many reasons for this... Online Shopping-Why so Popular? The graph to the left shows UK internet retail sales, as you can see between April 2000 and December 2002 the online retail market value has seen a sharp increase. There are many reasons for this, firstly that internet shopping is a lot safer then it was ten years ago, sites such as PayPal make online shoppers feel safer as you only give out your card details to one company and they act as a 'middle man' between you and the seller. In addition sales have increased due to more people that want to shop online because in most cases there is more choice of
