Pride and Prejudice In the 19th century women were vulnerable with many problems because of their sex. In Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" it shows what life was like for men and women. It also portrays love and marriage from social attitudes for marriage and money. It also shows distinct attitudes and expectations with regard to marriage which affects women in many diverse ways. In the typical family women would rely on their husband's income as they were not allowed to work. However if you weren't married you depend on your father or brother all your life and mostly end up as an old spinster , who would be very poor as she would have no right on anything in the family . Coursework Essay Comparing The Superstitious Man's Story And The Call I am comparing the two stories, The Superstitious Man written by Thomas Hardy and The Call written by Robert Westall. The Superstitious Man's story is narrated by a third person. We don't actually find out much about the narrator because not much is mentioned. However in The Call the story is narrated by the rota-secretary of the local Samaritans. Tension in The Superstitious Man is built up in many ways in the story, when Betty finishes her ironing she decides to go up to their chamber but to her great surprise, on reaching the foot the staircase she sees Williams boots, standing in the same place as they always stood, when he had gone to bed. How is Act 3 Scene 1 the Pivotal Point of the Play? Right from the beginning of the play the audience knows that Romeo and Juliet are going to die tragically. This makes the audience aware that the play will take a turn for the worst. Throughout the play up to Act 3 Scene 1 there is a tone of optimism between the two families, although there are differences between the two houses, it does not appear to be particularly serious until this scene and the play is all all about love rather than the feud between the two families. In this scene there are absolutely no stage directions, therefore it is completely up to the director to decide how to portray this scene. In the beginning of the scene, Benvolio suggests to Mercutio that they should go indoors because if they encounter any men from the house of Capulet a fight would be unavoidable. Analyse the character of Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four. How is he portrayed as an anti-hero and how does this relate to his rebellion in the novel as a whole? In the opening chapter of Nineteen Eighty-Four, the reader is given a description of Winston Smith; our "hero" is described as vulnerable, frail, weak and fearful. However, Winston's function is crucial. As a trickle of his individuality seeps through, there is promise of only failure if he should take any measures to counteract conformity. Winston's defeat may be implicit in the opening of the book, but he is not yet defeated. The reader feels sympathy for Winston. Without Winston as a focus, the novel would lose most of its power. Nineteen Eighty-Four is the story of Winston's revolt against 'The Party'. The story begins with a description of the slavish life of Oceania's citizens. The surprise is that Winston lives a very similar life to ours, as today we are fighting a dictatorship regime, with a war, in Iraq. The new machines took up several of the mens job which lead to unemployment in Winter for the men. To help the laboures get by allowenceswere made but in the 1820's they were cut this caused the laboures and their families even more greif and misery. To show the masters of the farms how annoyed they were and to show them that they needed them back. The unemployed laboures went around burning hayricks and smashing up threshing machines. This happened throughout the south of England, the riots spread to countries as far as Norfolk, Devon, Hereford and Sussex. The reason of why they are called the Swing rioters is because they followed a man called Sir Captain Swing. No one really knows whether Sir Captain Swing is actually real or not. The laboures only really used him in their threat letters to get the farmers scared. All the farmers hated Captain Swing as they had no one else to blame that was the only name that was signed at the bottom of the lrtters to keep them anonymous. Th goverment acted very strongly against the rioters and took a firm stand 19 laboures were executed, 481 were transported to Austrailier band 644 were sent to prison. Mes vacances de ski En février, je suis allée avec mon collège à Schladming, en Autriche, pour faire du ski. Nous sommes partis de Winchester le vendredi. Nous avons voyagé en car jusqu'à Douvres, où nous avons pris le ferry à Calais. Nous sommes arrivés à Calais à environ dix heures. Puis, nous avons fait un voyage très long en car, en passant par la France, la Belgique, l'Allemagne et une partie de l'Autriche. Nous sommes finalement arrivés à notre hôtel à Schladming samedi après-midi. Nous avons déchargé nos valises du car et nous les avons mises dans nos chambres. Tout le monde était très fatigant, alors nous nous sommes couchés assez tôt. Le dimanche matin, nous nous sommes levés à sept heures. Quand nous nous sommes habillés, nous sommes allés en bas pour prendre le petit déjeuner. Une demi-heure après le petit déjeuner, nous sommes partis de l'hôtel pour les pistes. Le ski était excellent. Dimanche soir, nous sommes allés à un spectacle de ski. Ce n'était pas mal, mais le spectacle était dehors, et il faisait assez froid! La santé et la forme La nourriture que j'aime manger est la pizza, les lasagnes et les pâtes en général. Comme boissons, je préfère boire du coca et toutes autres sortes de boissons sucrées. Le week-end dernier j'ai mangé chez YO Sushi. C'était un repas sain parce qu'il ne contient pas beaucoup de graisses et inclus un grand nombre de poissons crus, alors le sushi contient beaucoup de protéines, et de bonnes graisses. Il faut faire de l'exercice. Comme exercice, je fais beaucoup de sport. En été, je joue au foot et au basket et je joue au foot pour mon collège. Je fais du jogging tous les weekends avec un ami et, en plus, je joue au tennis avec mon copain au terrain de tennis dans mon village, et je joue au foot avec des copains au parc. Le week-end dernier j'ai fait partie d'une équipe de foot pour mon collège. Nous avons joué contre la meilleure équipe dans la région mais heureusement nous avons gagné le match. Alors je suis très sportif et je pense que je fais assez d'exercise. Fumer est très mauvais pur la santé et le problème c'est qu'on peut devenir dépendent. Comme ça, c'est difficile d'arrêter. Je connais des jeunes qui fument et l'ours vêtements sentent toujours la fumée. Selon moi, une cigarette dans la main est dégoutant et un gaspillage d'argent.
