Creating a computer based system for a video rental store.

INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND The organisation, which I am going to be doing, is a video/DVD and games shop. The name of the shop is Starlight Rentals. The organisation is quite a big organisation and this shop has about approximately 100-150 transactions a day. This organisation has a lot of members because if you want to rent a movie you have to be a member. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Starlight rentals deal with up to 100-150 customers everyday and for all the videos/DVD and games, which have been rented all written down on pad of paper. The problem is that because this is written down this is very difficult for owner because every time a movie is returned then the owner has to then look through the all his papers to find the name of the person who has returned the movie and then tick his name off. Ict Coursework

ICT COURSEWORK Analysis Hardware - The hardware which I will be using in this project will be the processor, monitor, floppy drive and the mains ones the keyboard and printer and a standard desktop PC with correct software. The processor - this processes data into information such as if I were to type some work (data) onto a computer it would become work with a meaning which is called information. The printer - this receives processed work, then prints the work so that the person who has typed the work can read the final copy through for himself. The type of printer that i will be using is a ink jet printer because it is fast and cheap. I could use a different type of printer such as a laser jet printer. The Keyboard - this is the main type of input device. It is very simple and easy to use. So work can be inputted easily and fast. This means work takes no time at all. Software - The software which I will be using in this project will be a Microsoft Access relational database program. In the next few lines I will discuss what the program actually does. Microsoft Access - This program will allow me to create a database. In the database I can add things such as tables, queries, forms, reports, macros and modules. Security - The security which I will be requiring must have my own password so only I and Mr. Bavington can get onto the main screen. This will mean

Data Protection

Data Protection Five major threats to the security These are 5 major threats to the security of data held within a computer system: - Theft - Virus - Spyware - Media Failure - Hacking/Unauthorized access I'll be talking about what is meant by them and how to prevent these issues from occurring in this project. Virus Viruses, these are programs that hijack the system and reproduce with the purpose of damaging and destroying the system. Many viruses attach themselves to executable files that may be part of legitimate programs. If a user attempts to launch an infected program, the virus' code may be executed simultaneously. How they spread: Viruses can increase their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files on a network file system or a file system that is accessed by another computer without the knowledge of the user. Can also gain a virus by connecting to the Internet and downloading an email message Virus Prevention Get good anti-virus software: Antivirus software is used to prevent, detect, and remove well basically any potentially dangerous and unwanted programs on your computer. BEWARE OF ATTACHMENTS. Do not open email attachments you are not expecting: Email viruses and worms are common. Not opening an email from someone you know is the first step. You should only open email you're expecting, you know it's from a trusted sender and should

Database Coursework

Database Coursework IDENTIFY I am creating this database for a Travel Agents in Egham. They would like me to create a database which allows them to be able to see their clients quickly and easily, see who their best customers are, be able to show them who owes them money, they would like to be able to print it out and finally it must be easy to use. I am using a computer to create the database because it will be faster, cheaper, more accurate when compared to a traditional filing system. There are a few disadvantages of using a computerised database though. They require training to use and to produce, they rely on electricity and there are security concerns about databases on networks. QUANTATIVE OBJECTIVES * Put all the clients wishes into the database * Keep simple to use * Make it to a professional standard ANALYSE My database will consist on clients information- * Name * Address * Telephone Number * E-mail * Specifications * Previous Bookings * Loyalty to the company * Disabilities etc. My data will come from the companies filing system. My back-up strategy will consist of floppy discs which all gets updated every Friday. The back-up should take approximately 20mins depending on the size of the database. The database will not be affected by the Data Protection Act. For my stereotype I will enter fictitious data. The hardware I will use is: a PC, a

Design a computer system for a video hire shop.

I work for a video shop called 'Vinnie's Vid's' and he has been moaning about the files. He is complaining that he needs a better way to store files about the users, videos and who has what video on loan. I will make a database for each of the problems and connect them. I will collect the information about users and videos from Vinny. His current system is a paper and pen system, which is too slow and inefficient. It could be lost at any time with only the one copy he will have to start the records all over again. A PC based system is fast, accurate and good for presentations. He has asked me to create a database by using Microsoft Access Objectives: * Make a database, which can find a certain type of film in 30 seconds. * Make a database which can automatically show who has the rented videos. * Make a database which shows who has overdue videos and how much they owe Introduction Choice of Problem: I have noticed that keeping customer records on paper can be time consuming and neither practical or easy to use. The aim of this project is to create a database for a company or an organization; I have chosen Vinnie's videos. My database will include customer information to make organization and customer relations simpler; the new system will be more practical. An electronic database will make life easier as it will be superior to a card filling system and will save time
