Using appropriate examples, describe what is meant by institutional factors and explain how social cost can be included in the least-cost equation to determine the optimal location for a new factory.

"Traditionally, geographers have considered factors such as proximity to raw materials, labor, energy supply, and the markets to determine the least-cost location for a factory. Now, the emphasis is changing towards institutional factors, and the social costs of industrial location." Using appropriate examples, describe what is meant by institutional factors and explain how social cost can be included in the least-cost equation to determine the optimal location for a new factory. Industrial location is product of a complex and dynamic combination of many factors. An entrepreneur has to consider a number of variables before making his final decision-making processes. Generally speaking, the ultimate aim of the entrepreneur is to maximize their profits or minimize their costs, though behavioral factors are sometimes taken into account. In recent years, institutional factors and social cost of industrial location become more and more important. Institutional factors also known as government policies or "Carrot and Stick" policy. Government many encourage or discourage the industrial growth in various areas for different purposes, in order to reduce regional disparities in economic growth, levels of employment and income, and so on. Government can achieve such purposes by introducing zoning laws or policy such as setting up Enterprise Zone. Besides, she can set up

aids in usa

Introduction AIDS was first identified in the USA in 1981. The epidemic has now spread to every part of the USA and to all sectors of society. It is thought that more than one million people are living with HIV in the USA and that more than half a million have died after developing AIDS. American HIV surveillance data are not comprehensive so many statistics must be based on reports of AIDS diagnoses. In interpreting such AIDS statistics, it is important to remember that they do not correspond to new HIV infections. Most people live with HIV for several years before developing AIDS. AIDS statistics People living with AIDS At the end of 2007, the CDC estimates that 468,578 people were living with AIDS in America, around 20,000 more than 2006. This number includes all people who have ever been diagnosed with an AIDS-defining condition and are believed to be alive, including many people who have recovered their health by taking antiretroviral therapy. The chart below shows the ethnicities of these people, revealing that black Americans have been disproportionately affected. The charts below show how adults and adolescents (aged 13 and over) living with AIDS most likely became infected with HIV. Just over 75% of adults and adolescents living with AIDS are men. An estimated 3,792 children aged under 13 were living with AIDS at the end of 2007. The vast majority of these

Investigation into Hookes Law - investigate the effect of mass on the extension of a spring.

Physics Coursework Investigation into Hookes Law Aim: To investigate the effect of mass on the extension of a spring. Prediction: My prediction is that, as you increase the mass, the extension of the spring will also increase. E.g. the double the mass, the double the extension. So I am saying that the results should be near enough consistent while increasing in the extension until I reach the end of the experiment. I will now support this prediction with some scientific knowledge. Hookes law is when forces are applied to a solid object which can result in extension. Hookes law is also able to predict how a spring (or other stretchable object) when force is applied to it. So this will show extension into the spring after the force is applied. Equipment: The equipment which will be required for the testing of Hookes Law are: * Clamp and Stand * Weights 50grams each * A measuring apparatus (preferable a 1 metre ruler) * Spring Diagram: Fair Test: I will try to keep this a fair test by only investigating 1 variable. So these are the things that will stay the same through out the experiment: * The Thickness of the spring * The length of the spring * The material of the spring The things that will vary throughout the experiment will be the mass and the extension. But I will only investigate and vary the mass myself because the extension will change as a cause of

Power In The First Part Of A Clockwork Orange

How Does Burgess Explore Power In The First Part Of A Clockwork Orange? The opening of the novel is the line "What's it going to be then, ey?" This is clearly something that is said by someone in an authoritative position and we learn in the next sentence that this is Alex. He is our narrator and this gives him a certain amount of power as he can choose what he wants to tell us as readers. Burgess also shows Alex's power through the various violent attacks he perpetrates on people who we would consider to be in a position of more authority than Alex is in our own society. The first of these instances is the attack upon a schoolteacher, which is a clear and obvious indicator that this society is very wrong. At the tender age of fifteen, it would be considered totally inconceivable that Alex would not only attack, but also humiliate a man who relies upon respect from youths in order to do his job. The physical power the gang have over the teacher is almost a way of compensating for Alex and his gang feeling threatened intellectually and in this sense the teacher is the more powerful. This idea of physical versus intellectual power is explored again when the gang leave the town centre to seek victims in the suburbs. When they find the writer and his wife, they destroy the book and beat the couple into teary subordination. These actions are lead by Alex who is portrayed as an

Mule killers

Mule Killers Lydia Peele's "Mule Killers" is an achingly sad story of loss and acceptance. Actually it's a strange little story told by a narrator, telling the story of his father courting his mother. The storyline runs astride with the tractors essentially putting mules out of work and, so, to death. The text "Mule Killers" is an epic short story. It actually has a multiple point of view, it changes between a first and a third person narrative. This is because the actual first person narrator tells a story in the story. Mostly it is a first person narrative, but in some sentences the story of the father "takes over" and it becomes a third person narrative. The narrator is omniscient and he is used as a messenger. His purpose is to tell his father's sad story to the readers. Comments from the narrator appears a few places, for example "It doesn't matter; I can imagine it", which just makes us remember that it is the narrator telling about his father and grandfather, and not an unknown narrator. This makes the relations between the narrator and the readers more intimate and makes the narrator reliable. There is a chronological order throughout the story. Direct speech is used a couple of times, but does not dominate the story. Again it is simply the narrator telling his father's moving story. Despite the narrators comments, he is quite objective in his storytelling, it

Darkling Thrush analysis

How does hardy suggest his own spiritual state by images of darkness and decay in this poem? The Darkling Thrush was written and set at the turn of century, in the depths of the harsh British winter, "when Frost was spectre-gray". It conveys Hardy's dismay at the rapid industrialisation of Britain, which he saw as ruining the rural landscape, corrupting the "ancient pulse of germ and birth" at the very heart of nature. The poem is written in first person, and we may presume that Hardy is the speaker. Hardy uses first person in an attempt to emphasise that his musings on the destruction of the countryside could be shared by all; he makes the poem at once universal and also personal. The use of first person helps the reader to really share Hardy's experience and witness his true emotions. The only other character within the poem is the "aged thrush" which appears mid poem to break up the miserable description of the desolate night. The thrush signals a change in the poem to a lighter tone and it is interjected straight into Hardy (and the reader)'s thought pattern with "at once", changing the structure of the poem. The use of the thrush in the title shows that the poem is more centred, despite its gloomy beginning, on the hope that the thrush brings with his "full hearted evensong" than the forbearing darkness Hardy describes at the start of the poem. It is interesting that

What does scene 5 reveal to you about the character of Cleopatra?

What does scene 5 reveal to you about the character of Cleopatra? Cleopatra has many sides to her personality, which are brought out by her moods and who she is speaking too. In this essay I will be looking at how Cleopatra treats her friends and servants, how she is coping with Antony being gone, how people react to her and also a close look at the language she uses. At the beginning of the scene Cleopatra speaks with Mardian, her official singing eunuch. She loves to tease Mardian about how he cannot please her, and in return he plays up to be this 'faulty' person, which is expected of him. Mardian, unlike Antony, is a man she can control due to him being castrated. She complements him on this, ''Tis well for thee That, being unseminared, they freer thoughts may not fly fourth of Egypt' here she could be saying two things to Mardian, firstly that he is lucky to be free of the sexual longings that make her want to be with Antony, but also that it's lucky for him being a eunuch, that he does not think of leaving Egypt (like Antony has) - this shows a quite threatening violent side to Cleopatra where as before she was actually being quite kind as she complemented Mardian. This is a clear indicator of how Cleopatra has so many different sides to her that sometimes you do not know how her words are meant to be read, is she being kind or threatening? Her relationship with
