'Johnson alone bears the responsibility for the escalation of war in Vietnam in the years 1965-68.' Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Amrit Singh Thabal 16MB History Johnson alone bears the responsibility for the escalation of war in Vietnam in the years 1965-68. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Only a few years of becoming president, Lyndon B Johnson had to do something about Vietnam, to get a victory; and fairly quickly. This escalation was set in the cold war, where the USSR and the USA were up against each other, and mutual destruction was only one bad move away. This escalation is where LBJ upped the ante in Vietnam and increase troop numbers vastly. From the start of 1965 23,000 US advisors were in Vietnam and by the end of the year 184,000 US soldiers were in Vietnam. This still increases over the years and by 1968, there are nearly 525,000 US troops in Vietnam. Not only troops, but spending and logistical support increased, therefore escalating the war. For this escalation, stalemate theorists blame a weak president (LBJ) for not backing out of Vietnam and for not being strong enough to stand up against the people and the military. But post-revisionists say that it’s a lot more complicated than one person and his weaknesses, it goes back 30 years. The war could have been escalated solely by Johnson. This may have been down to his personality; that he was the wrong man, in the wrong point of time in Vietnam. LBJ was very patriot and thought that the USA was the best

Argue who you believe assassinated JFK and why

Modern History: Argue who you believe assassinated JFK and why. John Fitzgerald Kennedy also known as JFK was the 35th president of the United States serving from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. A diverse range of theories have been put forth about the possible assassins involved in the assassination of the charismatic president and it still remains a very controversial issue today. However through analysing various sources, JFK’S cause of death can be attributed to three shots fired from the Texas School Book Depository on the sixth floor by Lee Harvey Oswald, along with another unknown gunman who shot the lethal head wound on the grassy knoll. Oswald and the unidentified gunman were not acting on personal motives, but rather on behalf of a conspiracy conducted by the CIA. Lee Harvey Oswald was significantly involved in the assassination of President Kennedy on the 22nd of November 1963. There is definite evidence of his involvement in the plot to assassinate the president with correspondence to the involvement of the CIA. In 1956, continuing until 1960, Oswald served in the Marine Corps. With this opportunity he received training in the area of marksmanship and gained a qualification as a sharp shooter. This indicates that Oswald could have hit his target of the president from the Texas School Book Depository Building. On the morning of the shooting Oswald was

The JFK assassination.

Here it had all happened. The world's most powerful man, the youngest U.S. president ever elected with a beautiful woman by his side, shot dead in full view -- the third US president to die by an assassin's bullet. Twenty-seven years before, right on this street, a car full of people was ambushed by a killer or killers. Here, rolling down Elm Street at ten or twelve miles an hour, comes the presidential car SS100X , the black, stretch Lincoln Continental limousine, twenty-one feet long, over three tons in weight. I could see Secret Service Agent Clinton J. Hill leaping in desperation for the back of the open car; Mrs. Kennedy leaning over towards him --reaching out in a futile gesture to recover part of her husband's head, blown away by a bullet. It would lie in the street until the next day when it was recovered by a medical student, Billy Harper, and handed in to the authorities. People everywhere, screaming and shouting, throwing themselves down onto the grass to avoid the fields of fire. And up on a four-foot-high concrete block to the right of the John Neely Bryan Pergola steps, Abraham Zapruder, hefting a 8mm Bell and Howell Movie Camera, being steadied by his receptionist, Marilyn Sitzman, shooting a 26-second, 500-frame film that would become the holy grail for what New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison would come to call the "murder at the heart of the American

What can you learn from source B about the assassination of John F Kennedy?

What can you learn from source B about the assassination of John F Kennedy? From source B we can learn many things about JFK's assassination. We learn that JFK was hit by 2 shots the second one killing him apparently hitting from the back, into his right temple. Source B also stated that 3 shots were fired from the sixth floor of the Texas schoolbook depository. The rifleman was named Lee Harvey Oswald. Source B declares the assassination weapon to be a Mannlincher - carcano rifle. Source B written by the Warren Commission states Oswald had no accomplices. To me this seems quite unbelievable. People who knew him in the marines said he had a 'Pathetic Shot.' The gun he apparently used would not be a weapon likely to be used in an assassination attempt, as it was such a poor weapon. I think source B is very unbelievable, as it was written by the Warren Commission, so therefore could be biased. How useful is Source A in supporting the View of Source B, that Lee Harvey Oswald was responsible for the assassination of John F Kennedy? Source A support's source B as it shows Oswald's movements. Source A states that he was at the Schoolbook depository, as he was stopped by a policeman on the second floor of the building one minute after president Kennedy was shot. Source B claims Oswald had no accomplices and this could be backed up by the fact that Oswald used public transport,

How far was the military involvement in Vietnam during the Presidencies of LBJ and JFK the consequence of policies pursed in the 1950's?

How far was the military involvement in Vietnam during the Presidencies of LBJ and JFK the consequence of policies pursed in the 1950's? Historians have often argued over whether it was policies pursed in the 1950's by Truman and Eisenhower or policies pursed by Kennedy and Johnson in the 1960's that were the main cause for military involvement in Vietnam. Examining the policies pursed and actions taken in the 1950's and the 1960's I will try to determine which era played a greater role in the insertion of out right military forces. The main policy being pursed in the 1950's was that of Containment. This was based on the idea of stopping communism as soon as it started to spread. The fear was that, if communism took hold in one country it would spread to the neighbouring countries and eventually take over the whole area. This theory was known as the domino theory. Eisenhower and Truman had both follwed this policy of containment. Truman in the Truman Doctrine first stated it as a policy of the United States. Eisenhower continued this policy and expanded on the idea with the domino theory. Truman felt a deep need to follow the policy. The Kennan Long Telegram had stated that all communism was controlled by Moscow. This left Truman facing what appeared to be an expansionist Soviet Union. This was shown to be true in Eastern Europe where the Soviets had placed puppet communist

During his presidency Kennedy faced many problems. One of these problems was the Segregation Laws introduced by the state legislature, all this meant that there would be no one places where white and black people could be at the same time. For Example there were to be separate restaurants and separate bus waiting rooms. However the most effective and serious law of all was to be the segregated education system, this meant

JFK Inaugural Speech Rhetorical Analysis

Fatima Hussaini AP Lang 10/9/12 On January 20, 1961 millions of America turned on their televisions to see newly elected President John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s inaugural speech while thousands stood in front of the White House, all waiting for the new president to address the current state if war and economic hardships America was consumed in. What they didn’t know was that they were about to witness one of the most eloquent and memorable speeches in American history. Kennedy instills confidence and provokes the American people to action and their fight for liberty, something which was desperately needed during that time. While his speech’s respectful eloquence is appropriate for the occasion of an inauguration, its youthful energy and look to the future make it distinctly John F. Kennedy’s. Kennedy begins his speech using an antithesis to show the real importance behind his victory, a victory of freedom and change. Additionally he uses abstract diction to get the audience’s attention and establish a connection with them. Through the use of abstract diction, words like: freedom, liberty, poverty, devotion, sacrifice, he relates to the everyday American citizen as these words are synonymous to the American way. In result, he evokes pathos by using words that describe American society and ideals which brings in the audience due to his youthful energy. Furthermore,
