Role of The Ombudsman

PUBLIC LAW 1: ASSIGMENT 2 971 Words An essay on the ombudsmen _____________________________________________________ This essay considers the role of ombudsmen in resolving disputes in contrast to the role played by the judiciary. In answering this question it will be noted that the ombudsman system does not overlap with the judiciary, but rather, it closes the gaps created by the judiciary. It will be argued that although the system has advantages over the judiciary, it also has limitations. Though the question refers to ombudsmen in general, the essay will make reference to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration in discussing the role played by ombudsmen how this role may be improved. Introduction The ombudsman has emerged as an effective method of dispute resolution in today's world. Its ideologies have been accepted widely as an attractive alternative to litigation. Consequently, it provides the public with remedial action where none is available through courts. Unlike courts, the ombudsman's services are cost effective, flexible, and informal. These qualities have contributed to its success in seeking justice against bad decisions. The origin The ombudsman concept has existed since the 19th century. Sweden was the first country to introduce an 'ombudsman' whose role was to investigate complaints from ordinary citizens.1 However, it wasn't until 1967

Starbucks vrs Dunkin

Alex Shishla English Compare-contrast essay Battle of the Franchises Coffee is something that is supposed to be simple. Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks made coffee-making into a competition where nobody ever wins. They always try to do better than the other store, and want people to spend more money on their products. The stores constantly are trying to make more food so that more people are attracted to their place. Certainly Starbucks and Dunkin are different, but they also have many qualities that are the same. In the beginning, they both only had coffee, but they started to get more and more food. From different kinds of muffins and scones to sandwiches with many components, these franchises think too much about what they want to sell to the public. Sometimes there are just too many choices. Food companies want people to spend much more money on their products than the other store. Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks are constantly trying to make more products. Every time a store puts out a new product, the other one has to come up with something better. Starbucks was the first coffee shop to put out frozen drinks (associatedcontent.com). Dunkin Donuts realized how popular the frozen drinks were, so the industry made up frozen drinks as well, such as iced coffees, coolattas, and smoothies to stay in the game. Dunkin' Donuts started taking costumers away from Starbucks by making

Hobson's choice Maggie can be described as a. "woman of specific qualities." What aspects of the play verify This statement. By Daniel Sitaranjan Hobson's choice Maggie can be described as a. "woman of specific qualities." What aspects of the play verify this statement. Maggie is the central character of the play "Hobson's choice" and the many facets of her personality are revealed throughout the play. The first of Maggie's qualities that become quite obvious to us at the beginning is her strong awareness of business and certain customers' potentiality. In the shoe shop, Alice and Vickey are occupying themselves by reading and knitting. But we see Maggie keeping the accounts and making a sale. Albert Prosser, a young lawyer with a liking for Alice, enters. He comes to by a pair of bootlaces, his real intent on visiting his Alice, Maggie's younger sister. Maggie does not let him leave without purchasing a pair of new boots. She sees that with his reasons for being there, Albert Prosser is in a very vulnerable situation. Therefore she manipulates him and creates the sale. She tells him, "We're not here to let people go without buying." So here we see qualities of Maggie very early on. These become active further in the play also. Maggie and Alice are seen talking of courting. Alice believes as every other woman of her day that courting is to come before marriage.

Discussing my overall view of Thomas Hardy's poetry about him being pessimistic.

English GCSE Coursework This essay will be in direct relation to the topic of Hardy's Poetry. During this essay I will be discussing my overall view of Thomas Hardy's poetry about him being pessimistic, after reading through three of his poems I have come to the conclusion that Thomas Hardy has a slightly pessimistic View, which is reflected within the words that he has chosen to express within his poetry. The three poems, which the essay is in relation to, are as follows: * During Wind And Rain * The Going * The Darkening Thrush In my opinion I believe that Hardy is very negative about nature, love and life, it is because from what we know about Hardy having a negative impact in life, we assume that this may have influenced him becoming pessimistic. During Wind And Rain In this poem Hardy particularly focuses on creating images, which are pessimistic. Although, in doing so he creates a balance between pessimism and optimism. So Hardy's poems are not all pessimistic, they are not always morbid and dark, they do shed a form of light through them. In Stanza 3 Hardy uses words such as ' rotten, ript, rose'. These words gives many meanings to it, the word rotten can mean death, something dying, decayed. It may tell us how Hardy sees thing, the word ript gives the reader an onomatopoeic feeling, and it shows an image of something being torn. This can show how Hardy mood

Spectroscopy

Chemistry Unit 2 Spectrometry Katie Bennett Spectrum Definition: The several coloured and other rays of which light is composed, separated by the refraction of a prism or other means, and observed or studied either as spread out on a screen, by direct vision, by photography, or otherwise. Introduction to Spectroscopy Spectroscopy is a complex art - but it can be very useful in helping scientists understand how an object like a black hole, neutron star, or active galaxy is producing light, how fast it is moving, and even what elements it is made of. A spectrum is simply a chart or a graph that shows the intensity of light being emitted over a range of energies. Spectra can be produced for any energy of light - from low-energy radio waves to very high-energy gamma-rays. Spectra are complex because each spectrum holds a wide variety of information. For instance, there are many different mechanisms by which an object, like a star, can produce light - or using the technical term for light, electromagnetic radiation. Each of these mechanisms has a characteristic spectrum. . The Electromagnetic Spectrum White light (what we call visible or optical light) can be split up into its constituent colours easily and with a familiar result - the rainbow. All we have to do is use a slit to focus a narrow beam of the light at a prism. This set-up is actually a basic spectrometer.

Set in the 1930's, Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" features four main families that are text book examples of the adversities within the moral and social ladder in the "tired old town" of Maycomb Alabama. These differences within their backgrounds has an effect on their use of language and the ways in which they interact with one another and their surrounding society. Harper Lee's clever use of language serves as a means of revealing the differences between families, creating atmosphere giving the reader a sense of authenticity and a way of enhancing and supporting key themes such as racial injustice and inequality. In this essay, I will explore the ways in which family relationships are presented, specifically within the Cunningham, the Radley and Ewell families and will refer to the language devices and techniques used to explore theses relationships. The evidently troubled Ewell family "lived as guests of the county in prosperity as well as in the depths of a depression" as a result of the Wall Street crash in 1929. They are illustrated to be severely disadvantaged - mentally and physically- by their "congenital defects" and suffer at the hands of "the diseases indigenous to filthy surroundings" as established by Scout's humorous and ironic first person narrative. This morbid description of the Ewells allows the reader to sympathise with the family as they must

Investigation on the size of Limpets.

Investigation on the size of Limpets Abstract: During my preliminary investigations, I established that sheltered and exposed rocky shores, differed immensely in their size of Limpets. Thus I was inspired to compare the size of Limpets on the sheltered rocky shore, Frenchman's Steps. The background knowledge and preliminary work enabled me conclude the following hypothesis; there will be a statistically significant difference between the size of limpets found on the sheltered rocky shore at two different vertical heights. I decided to look at 3M and 6M above chart datum for my investigation, as looking at the profile graph (appendix) the number of limpets was high at that chart datum. Aim: To determine if there is a difference in the size of limpets at two heights in there Vertical range. Scientific Background Limpets are animals that belong to the family Patellidae, subclass Prosobranchia of the phylum Molluscs. They have a strong, conical shell composed mainly of calcium carbonate, protecting the internal tissue, underneath which is a sucker, also known as the limpet foot, which allows limpets to adhere to rock surfaces, as shown in the photographs. Limpets are usually immobile unless they are foraging and so zonation is less apparent. As can be seen from the pictures above, limpets have a hydrodynamic shape so that resistance to water flow is reduced. This

Explain the link between cancer and mitosis. Describe how the chances of cancer developing in the human body may be increased.

Explain the link between cancer and mitosis. Describe how the chances of cancer developing in the human body may be increased. Cancer is one of the most common diseases in the developed countries, accounting for around one in four deaths. In Britain it caused about 25% of the deaths h in 1991 and is the most common cause of death following cardiovascular disease. There are, in fact, over 200 different forms of cancer, which is why it is not necessarily thought of as a single disease. For example, breast cancer is the most common form in women and lung cancer in men. Cancers are a result of uncontrolled mitotic cell division, which is the division of one cell to produce two genetically identical daughter cells. The problem is cased by mutations or abnormal activation of the genes which control cell division. We can say that a gene has been mutated if there is a change in one of the bases; for example, one base turns (e.g. adenine) into another base (e.g. thymine). This can lead to uncontrolled cell division. When genes are abnormal (or have been mutated) they are called oncogenes (onkos means tumour), about a hundred of which have been discovered. Cancerous cells will divide uncontrollably and repeatedly forming clones of genetically identical cells. Therefore, thought the mutation may start off in only one cell, it can be passed on to the cells decedents, so the daughter
