Shakespeare's presentation of Hamlet

It was a popular belief during Elizabethan times that if a man had been wronged and the state failed to see that justice was done, a son's duty was to take it into his own hands and seek revenge. Shakespeare presents Hamlet as a typical revenge play of the time, where the central character, Hamlet, has a duty to avenge his father's death. In Hamlet, Fortinbras and Laertes are also seen as revenge heroes, but in character contrast Hamlet in how he acts on his duty. This contrast highlights that whereas Fortinbras and Laertes are simplistic conventional revenge heroes, Hamlet on the other hand has the conventional features of a revenge hero, but is also seen as so much more. This is due to his awareness of religious principles and despite being Protestant, at times makes slight transitions to Catholic ideas. It is also due to his constant contemplation of the effects of his actions, rationalising the situation he is put in. Fortinbras is presented as a typical king who lives up to the reputation of his father with the aim to "recover [the lands]/So by his father lost". His aim is put into practice; Fortinbras, after threatening to invade Denmark, succeeds in doing so and is thereby fulfilling his role as a revenge hero. Similarly with Laertes, in the discovery of finding his father, Polonius, being murdered by Hamlet, he immediately takes on the role of an uncomplicated revenge

Analyse how Seamus Heaney uses language to convey his childhood experiences to the reader in his poems

Analyse how Seamus Heaney uses language to convey his childhood experiences to the reader in his poems "Death of a Naturalist" and "Blackberry Picking." Both poems are similar in their content as they are both written by Seamus Heaney about his childhood experiences. I also believe that both his experiences have a similar content. In "Death of a Naturalist" we find that the poem is about being out in fields collecting frogspawn. In "Blackberry Picking" the poet is speaking again about his childhood experiences in the fields. This time he is collecting blackberries. This is similar to "Death if a Naturalist" as it is in the wild at a young age enjoying nature. The titles are not so similar; "Death of a Naturalist" is a symbolic title. The title is not literal, no one actually dies in the poem. The death is of the way the poet feels about the frogs. In the first verse the poet feels for the frogs but in the second verse he almost fears them. "Blackberry Picking" on the other hand is not a symbolic title it is literal. In the poem the poet goes blackberry picking and this is explained in the title. Although the title could be considered symbolic also as perhaps the simplicity of the title portrays the simplicity and innocence of the child's mind. The mood between the two poems is also very similar. In "Death of a Naturalist" the mood changes between the two verses. In the

What causes feedback in a guitar or microphone?

What causes feedback in a guitar or microphone? Just for the record, feedback is actually the mechanism used to control almost every electronic device manufactured. Stability is a critical issue for all of these feedback control systems, and the gain, or level of amplification, used is a critical element in their design. When musicians talk about feedback, however, the connotation is negative because it is the term they use to describe the shreek that results when the gain is too high on the output of an amplified instrument or microphone. There are several potential mechanisms by which feedback can occur when sound is amplified. Let's deal first with the simple case of a microphone and an amplified speaker. (See the figure, but ignore the guitar for now.) Feedback occurs when a "loop" between an input and output is closed. In this scenario, the microphone serves as the input and the amplified speaker provides the output. In our example, the loop between the input and output closes when the sound radiated from the amplified speaker reaches the microphone and is subsequently amplified again. In effect, the cat is chasing its tail. (See the dashed red line connecting the loudspeaker to the microphone through acoustic feedback in the figure.) Gain is an important factor in this instance; it also explains why equalizers are frequently employed to control acoustic feedback. The

How does the usage of cinematography and editing in Michael Haneke's "Code Unknown" reinforce the lack of communication between characters?

FS1505 22 March 2011 Essay Emmi Makiharju How does the usage of cinematography and editing in Code Unknown reinforce the lack of communication between characters? Code Unknown: Incomplete Tales of Several Journeys is the most technical film of Austrian director Michael Haneke. Haneke is known for his minimalist approach both in technical and artistic terms. His editing is always meticulous and the cinematography and narratives are eccentric to say the least. Code Unknown follows the lives of four characters and their families who manage to somehow create havoc to each others existence. The film is composed of 46 scenes of which most are tracking shots, the longest lasting approximately nine minutes, without cuts. The scenes are abruptly cut, separated by a black screen that creates a mosaic reality, which is also visible in the narrative of the film. (Horton 2001) Haneke's films scrutinize the modern world, and Code Unknown especially explores communication and its importance in society and alienation that the contemporary world creates. The most visible form of cinematography in the film Code Unknown is the long take. Nearly all scenes are made with few or no cuts. The long take is an alternative to a series of shots, and is a strong creative resource. A long take, in this case, evokes emotions in the viewer without forcing it. In a series of short takes, the

The New Deal USA

TO WHAT EXTENT WAS THE NEW DEAL (1933 - 1937) A SUCCESS? The New Deal was an economic policy issued by F.D Roosevelt in response to the to the crash of the U.S stock market in the early 20th century and subsequent rising number of unemployed American's due. Despite its good intentions, the New Deal received numerous criticisms from writers and politicians after the first 100 days. However, it also gained much praise and was thought to be one of Roosevelt's finest policies by the forgotten man of America. In order to determine whether the New Deal was a success, both contemporary and modern sources need to be analyzed. The New Deal can be considered a success due to Roosevelt's ability to restore confidence in the American people. O'Callaghan states Roosevelt was seen by many as "God in this country"1 which is supported by Zinn who affirms that "Roosevelt [was] a hero to millions" in Source G. Source D shows the forgotten man receiving government attention and help which inevitably presented the everyday man of America with a sense of hope and unity. People trusted Roosevelt and therefore put their faith in the New Deal as it was offering jobs - although generally minor work - which allowed American families to continue with the idea established by their Founding Fathers of rugged individualism. It was this that resulted in Roosevelt's re-election, an election where he

How Daily Routines can help to support children(TM)s care and all round development for 0-3 years.

How Daily Routines can help to support children's care and all round development for 0-3 years. A daily routine is the pattern of a day. A good routine helps children growth and development because it meets their basic needs. It also helps children feel secure as they know that similar things happen each day. Planning a daily routine "All children benefit from routines in daily care and contribute greatly to the provision of a positive, safe and secure environment." (Childcare & Education Tina Bruce and Carolyn Meggit ISBN:0-340-92539-6) Routines change according to the age of the children. This means that adults planning a daily routine need to think about the needs of the children they are working with. How a welcoming routine supports a Childs development A welcoming routine is very important as it makes the child feel loved and wanted. Ways in which this could help them develop are: Physically- hand eye co ordination, when they hang their coat. Intellectually- remembering their marker on their coat peg. Language- talking and welcoming their teacher and even just being able to recognise their name. Emotional- this could be when they leave their parents as it might make then feel sad, or sometimes happy. Social- talking and welcoming the teachers, interacting with others. The way to carry these out would be if the children when they come are greeted by

Discuss the relative importance of physical and human factors in accounting for changes to vegetation over time within ecosystems in the British Isles

Discuss the relative importance of physical and human factors in accounting for changes to vegetation over time within ecosystems in the British Isles The British Isles is an example of a Lithosere succession, in that it began as bare rock from glacial retreat. The plant succession started with the pioneer species which were algae and bacteria. Both began to broke down rock surface through weathering. Then lichens and mosses began growing in the area which helps with water retention and provides a base for soil. The next stage of primary succession is herbs/grasses/flowering plants/ferns. These add nutrients and organic matter to the ground which provided soil. Next, shrubs invaded and colonised the area. Shrubs dominate and shade out the sere below them. Small trees such as birch and willow were the following sere which invaded and colonised the area. They produced humus from leaf fall which provided nutrients for the soil through nutrient recycling and encouraged new growth of the sere. The last sere is the larger trees which are oak and ash which dominate the area and shade out smaller trees. This sere is the climax community in that it is stable and no further succession happens after. The climax community is the deciduous woodland biome we know today. The main characteristics include the location in which they are found, which is in temperate maritime climate such as

Mateo Falcone. One day Gianneto Sanpiero, an outlaw that was being followed by Corsican voltigeurs, came up to Mateos Falcone house where Fortunato was alone.

Mateo Falcone Short Story At the beginning of the story the narrator talks about the geography where the story sets and where you should hide if you killed a man and how to take the necessary precautions to survive. For the narrator to know these things, he must have known someone who had gone threw that experience or he himself was part of it. Murder was nothing new at that time because of the French Revolution taking place at that time. Things were getting worse due to the tyranny, oppression, corruption in the government, bankruptcy, lack of civil rights and extreme taxation. Living in these circumstances, Mateo Falcone developed several skills that were vital for his survival and that of his family and those around him. He was a great marksman, respected man among the people and feared because of his reputation. Mateo was a great friend and a dangerous enemy, with a strong sense of justice. Mateo Falcone's son, Fortunato, is also a big part of this story. Fortunato was an intelligent young man raised in the noble's principles that were loyalty, honor, protection of the lower class and to never betray your people. One day Gianneto Sanpiero, an outlaw that was being followed by Corsican voltigeurs, came up to Mateo's Falcone house where Fortunato was alone. Gianneto Sanpiero asked Fortunato to hide him so the Corsican voltigeurs would not find him. Fortunato asked him if
