Compare and Contrast Roles Supporting Organisational Structures and Functional Areas in Organisations Each business has it's own structure. It could be a hierarchical structure, a matrix structure or a flat structure. Because of these structures it helps make a business efficient in each of the functional areas that it has. Each level of the structure has a level of responsibility. Hierarchical structures are usually used by big businesses that have lots of different areas. This is why this structure is referred to as the pyramid structure. The most important and the most paid are at the top and the less important and the least paid are at the bottom. The people at the top of this structure are the ones that make the decisions and the ones at the bottom follow them. The higher up the structure the more responsibility they will have. The matrix structure is used for projects within the business. No one has more authority than the other and they all have to report to each other. This structure is made to be a structure for temporary use only. A flat structure is usually used by a sole trader who has unlimited liability. If a business is fairly small then a flat structure is the best to use and will be the most useful. The owner is the person who makes all of the decisions in a flat structure. Unit 1P1 & P2 Kaviayi Kunnul In this term we have being doing two parts of Unit 1: P1 and P2. P1 is about understanding what is the purpose of business like McDonalds or D&G. We looked four different business organisations. P2 is about being able to describe different ownership so being able to say if McDonalds is a sole trader, partnership, PLC or a franchise. Then we linked what we had learned about different types of ownerships to four real businesses P1 -identify the purpose of four different business organisations P2 -describe the different types of business ownership, linking this to the size and scale of four different organisations. Sole Trader A sole trader is a small business which is usually run by one person who employs 1-5 other people. A sole trader is a person who is the only owner of a business which is not a partnership or a company. These businesses usually don't make a lot of profit but there are a lot of them. The sole trader can make a lot of changes to the business easily and quickly because they are the only person at the top and there are few people to convince. An example is a local shop or takeaway. Once I have done this, I can then decide to open up the best one out of the two. The main reason of why I want to be a franchisee is because, being a franchisee would be safer than being a sole trader or in a partnership. I'm not saying it'll be the easier option, but as long as it pays as well as I put in, then there won't be any disappointments. There is one disadvantage of becoming a sole trader, which is unlimited liability. This means that I'd have to pay for the losses made by the business, even if it meant selling my personal possessions, e.g. my house or my car. Even though this is the only big disadvantage of being a sole trader, it is too big of a risk that I'm willing to take. I'm also not exactly sure what products or services I'd be able to offer customers. Therefore, a franchisee would be the perfect answer. Being part of a partnership is a step up from being a sole trader. There is a lot less work involved; there are still disadvantages that may be a problem for me. The business, which was selling small items door to door, was run by just one person, Michael Marks. He had to start of as a sole trader, as he didn't have the capital or the experience required to enlarge his business, therefore he started with a small business and slowly started expanding. The second stage was when Michael Marks took on a partnership. He had to do this as he thought that this would help the business become more successful, as know there are two people to help run the company. So, Marks doesn't have to manage everything in the business; and the business can now receive more capital now that there are two people involved. The third stage was that the business was turned into a private limited company as Spencer became less reliable, so they couldn't stay as a partnership as each of them is responsible each others actions and this could cause trouble if both of them are not responsible. The Governing Body is responsible for monitoring and reviewing the Health and safety policy. It notifies LEA and the Health and Safety Executive of major accidents and dangerous occurrences. The Head teacher along with the Site supervisor is responsible for investigating, inspecting and maintaining equipments and school sites free from hazards. Every staff member has the right to identify health and safety risks and is responsible for discussing and informing them to the health and safety representatives of the school who in return are responsible for inspecting the situation and reporting it to the Head teacher. However the Governing Body of the school had to review the policy statement on annual basics or frequently as stated in the Health and Safety policy but this has not been done which is very irresponsible act as it needs to be monitored so as to run the policy smoothly.
