An analysis of the way in which mise-en-scene cinematography, editing and sound are used to create meaning during the opening 7mins of The Usual Suspects.

Richard Thompson January 2001 An Analysis of The Way in Which Mise-En-Scene, Cinematography, Editing and Sound are Used to Create Meaning During the Opening 7mins of The Usual Suspects When we go the cinema, we go for entertainment. But in order to enjoy the film we need to understand it. To do this an audience can look for the key concepts of mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and sound. During this essay it will be these subjects that I investigate in order to find out how the film is put together to generate meaning and response from the audience. The Usual Suspects has an original narrative structure which is crucial to the creation of the enigma that is created in the film, and thus important in the role of gaining the audience's attention. The narrative structure is able to do this by altering the time line of the film by showing the audience the end of the film at the beginning, this instantly hooks the audience and makes them want to know how this situation arised and what is going on. The film is able to indicate these times in time and settings through the use of captions, which anchor the meaning of any shot by telling the audience where it is and when it is. During the opening of the film the mise-en-scene attracts the audience attention as they want to know what is going on, who is this man Keyser Soze, why is the film opening up in a

Movie Review of Remember The Titans

Movie Review of Remember The Titans The film Remember The Titans based on a true story is set in Alexandria, Virginia is from the beginning made out to be yet another American high school sports movie like many other films made, however there is more to this feel good sports movie than just American football. If you are unaware 1971 played a vital role in bringing a separated community together, the divide of the community was between the black and the white races. This divide was made worse when two high schools; George Washington and Francis Hammond were changed into junior highs and T.C. Williams became the senior high school. One of the original high schools being predominantly white and the other predominantly black, the integrating of the schools created masses of tension and friction between the already rivalling races. With an all-star cast being linked to real life characters in this motion picture, some may see it as trying to alter the history of T.C. Williams. Remember The Titans should not be watched if you are intending to see a sports movie, because although based around American football there is more depth in this story then just a game. It is based on the racial tension of a community being pushed to the limits as they are forced to work as a team. The Film starts at a funeral, however we are unaware whose funeral it is and why the film decides to begin

Cisc v Risc Introduction: To begin this assignment , I will outline the definition of cisc and risc . Cisc stands for complex instruction set computing and Risc stands for reduced instruction set computing . these two concepts are both types of instruction sets used in computer architecture for processors and microprocessors . computer architecture is a way of examining the structure of a computer, we mainly focus on the how the cpu performs internally and how it accesses addresses in computer memory. The objective of the microprocessor is to advance the performance of the machine. Performance can be defined as the amount of work a processor can do in a set time . In order to improve the computers performance we would have to increase the speed of how we process these instructions or else make these instructions more complex so they will perform more work, but we can't have both. Speeding up the instructions (cisc) means changing the clock speed of the computer , while making the instructions more complex (risc) means we will require more power to process them. An real life analogy of this instruction set concept would be to take a bike for example , if we are in a low gear we can pedal really fast to get where we are going but in a high gear we can go the same distance but we require more power to push the pedals. In the following sections I will try and explain the two

An analysis of the opening sequence of the film 'East is East' directed by Damien O'Donnell The film 'East is east' is based on an autobiographical screen play by Ayub Khan Din. It tells the story of a mixed race Asian family who live in a north of England town. The father, Mr. Khan, is intent on keeping the traditions of Pakistan, while his children oppose to following traditions such as arranged marriages to other Pakistani families. It shows the family's struggle to live ordinary British lives while the father pushes to bring Pakistani culture to his children. The principal themes running though out the story are racial intolerance, adolescents and their need for independence, and the problems of being caught between two different cultures. Though out this analysis I will focus on the key film language features of lighting, sound, camera and mise en scene. A successful opening to a film should introduce the area the film is to be set in, the main characters and something about them, and start building the atmosphere and mood of the film. It should do this by using the first camera shots to show the scene. Sound can be a very useful tool in creating atmosphere as is lighting. Showing close-ups of the main characters faces will introduce them to the audience and give them some information on the character's backgrounds and give first impressions of the film's themes.

DOES TONY BLAIR RUN A PRESIDENTIAL-STYLE ADMINISTRATION

DOES TONY BLAIR RUN A PRESIDENTIAL-STYLE ADMINISTRATION? In this paper, I intend to analyse the extent to which the current Labour administration shows the characteristics of a presidential government. To do this, the term 'presidential' must first be defined. A definition of a presidential government that is generally accepted by political analysts is 'a system of government in which the powers of the president are constitutionally separate from those of the legislature.' The British system of government is parliamentary and does not match the definition of presidential. Therefore, the question must be answered by looking at the individual features of a presidential government and comparing them with aspects of the Labour administration and Tony Blair in particular. I will conclude by summarising the arguments presented. In 1997 it is fair to say that the Labour party was desperate after being out of power for fifteen years. But there was hope. A relatively new face had emerged to become the leader of New Labour. In an era when political parties are run like organisations and rely on numbers and strong leaders, Tony Blair filled his party with excitement and anticipation. He went on to lead the party to a landslide victory in the general election after a campaign that focused significantly on his personality. Inevitably, Tony Blair was idolised by his party for

Social Work Theory and Social Work

000 word written assignment Write a 1000 word assignment outlining the individual research and reading undertaken and how you contributed to the presentation. In the unit the student worked in a group of four to derive a presentation illustrating her ability to utilise theory in the selected scenario. The scenario the group looked at was scenario 2; Fiona. Fiona lived in a multi-occupied accommodation where there was a lot of crime in the area. She left home when she was 17 and faced multiple problems since finding out her younger sister was abused by her uncle as a child. The group looked at theories surrounding guilt and disclosure, along with the possibility of psychosis. The group also looked into psycho-analytic theory and social learning theory and made a link between guilt therapy and drug therapy, for example, the medical and non-medical help she should be receiving. The students spoke about what they would do as her social worker to point her into the right direction and make her feel less vulnerable. By looking at these theories, the group hoped to make sense of Fiona's situation and the reasons why she bestowed such feelings of guilt and hatred for herself. The group split the work load into four parts and it was the writer's responsibility to look at theories surrounding guilt. The reasoning for Fiona to feel such guilt was immediately apparent to the student

Critically evaluate trait theories of personality.

Critically evaluate trait theories of personality. "There are as many definitions of personality as there are personality psychologists" is what Sternberg stated about personality (Intelligence and Personality /Sternberg). Unfortunately, this statement isn't far from the truth. Personality is one of the most general and unclearly defined terms in psychology (Eysenck, 1957). This essay evaluates trait theories of personality on the basis of Block, Weiss and Thorne's (1979) definition of personality: Personality refers to "more of less stable internal factors that make one person's behaviour consistent from one time to another, and different from the behaviour other people would manifest in comparable situations". To begin with it will present a general description of trait theories. It then assesses trait theories on several levels of analysis. It begins by looking at the validity and reliability of assessment forms for traits and the resulting predictive value specific traits in people will have on behaviour. It then evaluates individual and situational factors that affect predictability. The extent to which trait theories can be used to predict behaviour and in which situations. An assessment of the practical application and benefit the development of trait theories has had in different areas follows. Finally trait theories of personality are compared to other

The future European Union - what should it be? An integrated federal state, a free trade area, something else?

The future European Union - what should it be? An integrated federal state, a free trade area, something else? Since the first enlargement of the European Community in 1973 northward, which saw the inclusion of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark, the search for "an ever closer union" has been taking place. When EC recommended on 9th October 2002 that another ten countries should join in 2004, it is believed that the integration of Eastern Europe will push the European Union towards a new level, because it will provide a larger market, which will be the only way for the EU to compete in the new global economy. However, people cannot stop wondering, what the EU should be like in the future, as the new Europe will be highly diverse in all dimensions - not only in the field of economics, but also geopolitics, and social conditions, political priorities. In this essay, it will look at the future EU, being a state with liberty, democracy and solidarity. Liberty has two meanings. To start with, in terms of The Single European Act, the chapter on the single market committed the EC to remove all internal barriers by the end of 1992, enabling the free flow of goods, services, capital and people in the member countries. There is little doubt that the internal market will become the prime focus of economic interest and activity over the next few years since it has given the EC a

Tim Burton: An Auteur?

Tim Burton: An Auteur? 'My movies just sort of ended up being representative of the way I am' - Burton In Hollywood, where film making is a business ruled by profit and loss columns, and respect and admiration are bestowed upon film-makers by virtue of their films' box-office success. Tim Burton is considered to be a genius blessed by the Midas touch. But while his films have to date reaped nearly a billion dollars worldwide, they are as far from being slaves to common-denominator commercialism or audience demographics as Burton himself is to fully embracing the Hollywood mainstream in which he has rather uneasily existed throughout his career. Burton began as an animator at Disney and has continued to operate within the studio system ever since, though he has remained largely removed from its financial imperatives and corporate mentality. Burton's characters are generally outsiders, misunderstood and misperceived, misfits very often encumbered by some degree of duality. They operate on the fringes of their own particular society, tolerated but pretty much left to their own devices. In many ways Burton embodies that contradiction himself: he is embraced for his successes, but in all other ways Hollywood and he maintain a respectful distance from one another. Consequently his work has remained as idiosyncratic, imaginative, delightful and refreshingly inventive as his
