Jaws - Media Studies

Analyse the ways the director builds suspense and scares the audience in the film "Jaws". Steven Spielberg directs the movie "Jaws" in 1975. It is about a great white shark terrorising a small city in the USA called Amity. The movie is set on the big American holiday: July the 4th.At that day everybody goes to the beaches and it is very dangerous for the people especially with shark in the water. "Jaws" is one of the biggest blockbusters of the period. It immediately becomes the most watched movie for the 70's with packed out cinemas and very scared audience. The opening scene in the movie is really affective. At the beginning the audience listen to music, at first everything is black, the music is building up and we wait for something to happen. This makes us use our imagination and the faster the music becomes, the more nervous we go. This kind of sound is called non-diegetic: the audience cannot define where the music comes from- it's a soundtrack. The black screen then turns into underwater swim seen trough the eyes of the shark. While we see the swim the credits are going. This is often used technique in movie industry. The scene then cuts to a beach party. Spielberg delays the action of the shark and makes people to wait for the real horror to happen. The party is near the sea with beach fire and mouth organ is playing. The camera goes trough all the people in the

Macro Essay The film I will be analyzing is "Blade runner," a film directed by Ridley Scott and based on Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," can be classed as a Classic Film Noir, as well as a Science fiction. Ridley Scott plants bits of Film Noir throughout, from the subtle like cigars, to the obvious: the washed-up cop for the main man. The film uses the original 'film noir' motifs and some that Ridley Scott created himself. The film is a sci-fi film as it is set in the future. The main film noir motif as such that Ridley Scott incorporates into Blade Runner is the use of the film noir characters. Although there are many differences between Deckard and the classic film noir anti hero, he is defiantly the anti hero. He tends to wear a long trench coat which is a classic costume for the film noir genre. He also appears to be a loner which tends to be a film noir anti hero trait. The story is about the protagonist character, a policeman named Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) in a decrepit 2019 Los Angeles whose job it is to "retire" four advanced technology robots, known as "Replicants". The four fugitives, Pris (Daryl Hannah), Zhora (Joanna Cassidy), Leon (Brian James), and their leader, Roy (Rutger Hauer), have escaped from an off-world colony to find their creator and make him expand their four-year life span. This film originally came out in 1982 but

Magazine Evaluation

AS Media Studies ME3 The magazine that I have designed is a men's magazine which focuses on car performances, new powerful cars and all types of modification equipment available for Volks Wagon cars. Through market research that I have carried out I have identified a gap in the market for VW specialised modification magazines. My market research showed me that other leading car manufacturing companies such as: Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Subaru and Vauxhall etc. all have their own specialised magazine's promoting their sports range of new cars. All the above mentioned companies have other manufacturing company cars mentioned slightly in their magazines. My magazine is targeted at 21 -33 year old men who come under the socio demographic groups A - C2. My magazine is only targeted at men because my research has shown me that 65% of men would like some sort of modification done to their cars whereas only 9% of women would like it to be done on their car. My magazine is going to be in direct competition with Max power, Evo, Fast Car and Performance because all these cars also specialise in performance cars. The advantage I am going to have over all these magazines is the fact that all the above mentioned magazine just briefly analyse VW cars whereas I will be going into detail with all VW performance cars. The magazine has therefore been designed to appeal to men aged between 21

The Fairground

Feeling the Fairground Fun! The people were standing inquisitively outside, queuing up to enter. It was extremely hectic waiting to get in; people hung around like ants in a ruined colony. The public handed over £2.40, to get their tickets, so they could go to the magnificent fairground. The entrance was narrow like a cannel footpath and people instantly caught a strong waft of burgers and chips. Stalls with food and drink were selling candyfloss hanging down from the top, it looked like pink, chewy clouds and the trickling of the drinks made people thirsty. The children around were jumping up and down like a herd of kangaroos, as they were waiting to eat. Everyone crushed the fine emerald blades as they moved along the grass. Mild screams echoed from round the corner, there were miraculous rides. Hearing the increasingly powerful screams, you could tell the public were thunderstruck. By 2 o'clock the sun started to sway around the fairground as if it were a swing of light. There was a good atmosphere and as the people queued for rides, it made them over excited and there were noises of cheering, shouting and clapping! When people where whirling around on the merry-go-around their heads span round like spinning tops and when they came off they needed to rest! The background music was pop music and it interested all the little children to start shaking their hips and get

Let Him Have it

In the film version of the case of Craig and Bently-"Let Him Have it" the director has chosen to be bias and uses it in different ways. Bias is when you only have a one sided view of something. The film can show that the director is biased. The things that show this are that you get much more background information on Derek Bently and his family. Immediately this favours Derek Bently as the audience watching feel closer and more informer on his background, so therefore they know more about him and want him to win this case. The director has chosen go give information and situations of Derek's epilepsy. The first scene of the film is of the blitz in the war and Derek under the rouble. This is what the doctor's thought caused the epilepsy. The director also chooses to show Derek in a situation where he starts to have an epileptic fit, once his parents have decided to let him go out on his own. Both these ideas that the director has selected can make the audience feel pity for Derek seeing as in the film the doctors say that because of his condition he is believed to have the mind of an 11-year-old. On the other hand Christopher Craig has not been focussed on as much as Bentley. The only background information given about Craig is that he is a bad influence and can be a gangster, as he has grown up with an older brother. The director chooses to show the audience the

Let Him Have It Essay.

8th June 2003 Let Him Have It Essay The Film was made to make people feel sorry for Derek Bentley by making us think he's the victim. It made people sad for him. I felt sorry for him because he didn't deserve a death sentence and that the coppers just wanted to blame someone. They use lots of different ways to manipulate us. Manipulation means, with skill to influence by unfair means or cunning. E.g. to give a false appearance to. They manipulate us before we see it by the pictures on the front cover. There are 2 men from the film there. One is called Christopher Craig who in the picture is wearing black, looked pale. Gangster style hat, a smirk, light shiner one him holding a gun. This already makes us thinks that he is the bad guy and not to trust him and he is the cause of trouble. The other character is Derek Bentley who is smaller than Craig, Appears younger, innocent and vulnerable. He has a scared expression contrasted with Craig because the light shines on Craig. Derek looks weak a bit and also as if he is in trouble for something he didn't do. The film is biased in some ways because Iris Bentley helped Peter Medak, the films director to make the film. She would have given her point on view of Derek. She might have made it out that Derek is the innocent one and he was pushed into doing things, because of his illness. The film also uses the effects of music, Camera

'Let Him Have It' film review.

'Let Him Have It' was a film produced in 1991. The film is directed by Peter Medak and screenplay is by Neil Purvis and Robert Wade. It is 115 minutes long and is in full colour. The main character, Derek Bentley, is acted by Christopher Eccleston. The movie is a true story, based in post-war (1950's) London about a 19 year old boy wrongly hanged for murder. Derek Bentley is an easily led boy with a low I.Q. When he is accused of a murder which he did not commit, he is manipulated by the jury which results in him being hanged on the 28th January, 1953. Since then his innocence has been proven. In this piece I will consider all the aspects of the opening four scenes that make Bentley appear in a sympathetic light. I will look at camera angles, music and how other media devices have been used, as well as how characters are portrayed. Different techniques are used in the opening scene to create sympathy for Derek Bentley. First of all, during the opening credits we hear sirens and panic before we see anything. The opening credits simply use white writing on a black background; this is very plain and creates a depressing mood. The sirens etc. cause the audience to experience feelings of apprehension, nervousness and curiosity, wondering what the sounds could be about. The chaos is heightened as it is set at night; the darkness makes things more confusing. Amongst

The Big Match

The Big Match We have been studying and analyzing the big match which was between England and Chile. The match was played in February of 1998 and was leading up to the world cup. It was played in Wembely, which is known as the heart of English football. I, while analyzing the Big Match have focused on commentary as well as some technical aspects of the game. In the first fifteen seconds of the title sequence, the words 'Big Match' were repeatedly shown. These words stood out because of their font and colors, which were red and blue. When a viewer views the title sequence s/he is ment to feel as though, "This is it, the biggest most important match ever." Behind this logo was a football. This football was changing its shape to a heart, and then back again to a football over and over again. This to me to symbolizes that football is life. This also symbolizes passion as well as the effort the players put in to the game. Another symbol that came up in the first fifteen seconds of the title sequence was an eye. The 'pupil' of this eye was changing from a football to key players of the English side such as: Owen, Shearer, Ince, Beckham and Glen Haddle. This implies that the audience are watching or looking over these key players, who are at the centre of attention. The music in the first part of the opening sequence is fast and has a good beat. This music is related to the

media review

Year 11 media: Practical production supporting account My practical production magazine 'Real' is of the lifestyle genre, I looked at magazines like 'Now' and 'Heat' for inspiration for my magazine. With the lifestyle genre I am looking to put a mixture of real life stories and celebrity gossip in my magazine as these are the main connotations found in this genre. My target audience for my magazine is mainly aimed towards females aged 16-40 as this is a very popular target area and their basic interests and attraction to a magazine is easy to create. The magazine has fewer longer articles and more images and shorter texts as most of the people who read these magazines are on the move or don't have time to read through lots of articles and would prefer to flick through a magazine and still be able to pick up 'of the moment' gossip or 'amazing' true stories. My font cover is bright and bold to stand out to the reader. The name 'Real' is used, as these are real stories and real gossip so the readers will have trust in the magazine to be truthful. The name is in black bold and is bigger than the other fonts on the page to make it seem more important. Also 'real' the issue number, price, and website are drawn out from the rest of the magazine as they are in a pink text box outlined in black. I did this to draw attention to the name of the magazine and other vital information. My
