A study of the reasons for homelessness among 16 to 18 year old male and females in Northern Ireland.

Research Proposal Title A study of the reasons for homelessness among 16 to 18 year old male and females in Northern Ireland. Introduction There are families and single people of all ages and backgrounds throughout the United Kingdom living in overcrowded, damp and unsafe housing, staying in temporary housing like hostels, bed and breakfast accommodation, night shelters or living under the threat of eviction or repossession. For others the disadvantage is even worse and the reality of home may be a doorway or a cardboard box. They are described as living rough. Perceived reasons why people ultimately find themselves homeless include relationship breakdown, domestic violence, overcrowding, debt, bad budgeting and mental illness. Also involved are the consequences of unemployment and redundancy and young people exiting care facilities without adequate housing provision being arranged or available. Current government policy results in 16-18 year olds not being automatically entitled to social security benefits or where they do receiving benefits these are below adult rates. For young people where family relationships have broken down and living on a small income can often result in being totally unsupported both emotionally and financially. For many young homeless people they have no home to which they can realistically return and their need to stand on their own feet is

Female Circumcision/Mutilation: a question between Cultural Relativism vs Human Rights.

Gender and Law Question: Female Circumcision/Mutilation: a question between Cultural Relativism vs Human Rights. " When girls my age were looking after the lambs they would talk amoung themselves about their circumcision experiences and look at each other's genitals to see who had the smallesr opening. Everytime the other girls showed their infibulated genitals, I would feel ashamed as I was not yet circumcised. One day I could not stand ot any longer, I took a razor blade and went to an isolated place. I tied my Clitoris with a thred, and while pulling at the thread with one hand I tried to cut part of my clitoris. When I felt the pain and saw the blood coming from the cut I stopped ........i was only seven" Chosing this topic was more of a act of bravery as well as interest. As a society we never really understand the amount of pressure we place upon conformity, acceptance and code of conduct. Even worse, as a child, life should be to a certain limit, carefree and daring, adventurous. The prospects of marriage should be taken in to consideration at a later stage even if it based upon cultural and traditional rules. From as far as history can recall, mankid has invente d and created practices that have "intricately" realted to certyain social orders and to traditional codes of behaviour. One of those practices that has survived through history, is that of Female

OWT 308 Advanced Human Resource Management 'Work stress is often perceived as a problem of the individual'. Discuss. Joanne Ambler 0261289 Word Count: 4024 Date: 18/4/05 'Work stress is often perceived as a problem of the individual'. Discuss. Some academics and media sources have suggested that stress as a psychosocial phenomenon is currently on the increase, specifically in the United Kingdom (e.g. Cooper, 2004). Cooper claims that contemporary workplaces are breeding grounds for stress, such is the high emphasis placed on work by many and the changing nature of work. For example, increasing working hours for many workers, due to some demanding more hours and pressures from technological changes and global and domestic market demands. In addition, the blurring of boundaries in the work-home interface and more women entering paid work, have raised the potential to adversely affect well-being (Snow, Swan, Raghavan, Connell & Klein, 2003). Although work stress was first studied in 1964, by Kahn, Wolfe, Quinn, Snoek and Rosenthal, these recent changes have raised awareness in the past 20 years or so, that work stress is more prevalent now and problematic rather than beneficial. According to Newton (1995:1), work stress 'has become so prevalent that for most people in the West it is unavoidable'. It was recently suggested to be 'the new backache' by the CBI1 as a

Social Work Theory, Methods & Skills

Social Work Theory, Methods & Skills Task-Centred Practice Approach "The main elements of task-centred practice are best described as the building blocks which create the complete system. Each one is needed. Therefore each one needs to be understood, and to be integral to the worker's approach." (Davies 2002: 107) "The task-centred approach is based on the view that we are more likely to act ourselves into a new way of thinking, than we are likely to think ourselves into a new way of acting." (Doel & Marsh 1992: 20) Task-centred approach is probably one of the most researched approaches and one of the most commonly used approach to problems (Parton & O'Byrne 2000: 159). It was developed out of research into effective social work practice, so was devised specifically for social work. It arose in the late 60's and challenged the long-term psychodynamic emphasis of social work. As it has influenced social work so dramatically, it is often cited by workers and some elements are now common practice, which was very radical at the time. It is individualist rather than radical tradition and does not call for social change. It has been further-developed through research, and is described as 'short-term; time-limited; problem-solving' (Price 2005: 1). Background Task-centred practice was originally based on work of an American academic called Bill Reid. There were a series of

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue: the Jackdaw Politics of the Third Way.

New Labour claims that its 'third way' represents a new and distinctive approach that differs from both the old left and the Conservative right. There have been many attempts to position the third way on a left-right continuum (see Driver and Martell 2000). On the one hand, New Labour claims that it is a left or left of centre party, with the third way seen as a modernised or renewed social democracy (Blair 1998; Giddens 1998, 2000). On the other hand, it has been argued that there has been a significant convergence between New Labour and the Conservatives, resulting in a new consensus of 'Blaijorism', or perhaps now 'Hagairism'. However, this approach is too simplistic as the picture is more complex and nuanced. First, there remains considerable debate about the content of the labels of the first and second way. Crouch (1997) claims that there have been four distinct 'Old Labours'. It is unclear to what extent Labour was ever a 'socialist' or even a 'social democratic' party, and the broad church of Old Labour includes individuals as diverse as Attlee, Bevan, Crosland and Benn. Similarly, the Conservative right is an uneasy mixture of neo-liberal and neo-conservative tendencies. There has been some rewriting of history, caricaturing the old left and the new right in order to create space for the third way (Economist 1998; Levitas 1998; Navarro 1999). Second, attempts to

This assignment is an evaluation of my second year field practice placement, drawing on aspects of the understanding of the organisation in terms of analysing the community development project

Introduction: This assignment is an evaluation of my second year field practice placement, drawing on aspects of the understanding of the organisation in terms of analysing the community development project. The community development project consisted of organising a number of taster sessions, which would enable the client group to have access to a number of various educational opportunities while taken note of the fundamental need of the client group, which is to be social included and feel apart of 'normality'. Community development models seem to have an emphasis on participation, initiative and self help, therefore while drawing on aspects of the organisation this assignment will determine in particular which models are relevant to my project. Finally, my role as a professional worker and my contribution towards the development project has been critically assessed throughout the assignment. The link between social exclusion and social inequalities were the initial models of community development, but these were highly contestable and problematic as a result the Home Office set up community development projects to attempt to deal with deprivation.. In establishing a link with social class and community, the community development projects allowed for various forms of support mainly in the set up initiatives. The Community Development Foundation is a non-profitable

An overview of my DP1 placement which will highlight the location of my placement, the opportunities for learning and a brief outline of the work undertaken by staff and myself.

INTERIM REPORT Within the Final report, I will give an overview of my DP1 placement which will highlight the location of my placement, the opportunities for learning and a brief outline of the work undertaken by staff and myself. I will also draw on knowledge learned from academic study such as Social Work Practice 1, Poverty, Family and Lifespan and Disadvantage also personal experience and feedback from supervision. As a student, I am required to evidence from my practice and the progress towards meeting both the competence's and value requirements to the level outlined in the course manual. Hugman and Smith state,'' Competence in social work requires the understanding and the interaction of values in social work. This set of values can essentially be expressed as a commitment to social justice and social welfare, to enhance the quality of life of individuals, families and groups within communities, and to a repudiation of all forms of negative discrimination''. (2001,p95) I will discuss how supervision has been influential on my personal development and how it has enabled me to critically evaluate and promote my working practice by addressing core skills and values. Anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practices are issues that are an integral part of social work practice and therefore I shall discuss these issues within the report. Also within the report, I will maintain
