Jaws - Review.

JAWS Jaws is a stunning yet petrifying film movie or rather a blockbuster directed by the brilliant Steven Spielberg. The scene is Amity Island, a cosy coastal community dependent on tourist dollars during the summer months, year is 1975, favourite holiday destination, and the time is summer, just before the 4th of July holiday, time for the proud Americans to celebrate their national Independence day. This is time for the Americans to celebrate and enjoy themselves at the beaches and with summer approaching the beaches being occupied in large numbers. The movie is based on three men being brought down to the level of a real-cold blooded killer while keeping perspective upon their essential humanity. The story is about a ferocious and cold-blooded shark that is responsible for the lives of innocent young lives that are purely there to have some fun. Setting the movie in binary opposition creates more drama and anxiety for the audience as the scenes are set in a really pleasurable and cheerful environment, this creates dramatic effect to the movie, and watching small kids who are having innocent fun being brutally killed creates more tension than having bad people being murdered. Music is always an essential part of this film; it is used to create different moods. The shark is connected to the music in the title sequence as the music beats slowly and gradually gets more

Anaysis of the first 3 minutes of the horror film "Wrong Turn".

Micro Elements – Wrong Turn Wrong Turn is a horror film directed by Rob Schmidt. The theme of horror will instantly attract the viewers into the film as they are always going to be sitting on the edge of their seat. The film is set deep in the woods… but no one’s lived to tell about it, where Chris Finn is on his way to an interview but turns around to avoid traffic and makes the biggest mistake of his life, where there he then crashes into a group of young friends and they are stranded along this long road. The friends then encounter a group of monsters and then face death. I am going to look at the Misc en scene and sound of the Micro Elements in the first 3 minutes of the film. The film starts off with some non-diegetic sound, which gives off a spooky, edgy vibe. As this is going on there is a crane shot of a huge forest with a long road running down the middle of the deep woods, this shot then runs down the forest at speed, whilst the track playing is getting lighter to hear. This then leads to a rocky wall with a long shot of two people both male and female escalating the wall, these actors both have their rock climbing equipment and are doing a good job of climbing the wall, this automatically gives off the image that they know what they are doing and are highly experienced in rock climbing. At this point the track has stopped playing and the diegetic sound

James Bond Assignment

James Bond Assignment: In this assignment, I will be examining the standard Bond genre from Golden Eye, the seventeenth bond film. I will also be exploring how the audience and I respond to Bond films and what our expectations of the films are. In the film industry, Genre exists as an obliging system of categorization and allows audiences to sort between films. The industries use the appropriate advertising, marketing and distribution for it to target its audience. Moreover, it allows the audience to filter through films and make a selection on what they want to watch. Genre is a recognizable and established category of written work employing common conventions to prevent readers or audiences from mistaking it for another kind. Narrative is a way of comprehending the story, time, and causality. Since in film there are at least two important frames of reference for understanding the main plot of the story, time, and causality, narrative in film is the principle by which data is converted from the frame of the screen into a diegesis, that frames a particular story, or sequence of action; equally, it is the principle by which data is converted from story onto screen. Contending that fairy tales could be studied and compared by examining their most basic plot components, Vladimir Propp, a Russian Folklorist from the 1920s developed an analysis that reduced fairy tales to a

Typical gender representations in the films Casino Royale, Dead mans shoes and Control

Typical gender representations in the films - Casino Royale, Dead man's shoes and Control Representations provide models for how we see gender, social groups, ethnic groups and many other things, I am going to talk about the representation of gender in the films I am studying. In the action film "casino Royale" a very typical male action hero is represented in the form of James Bond (Daniel Craig). He fits in with the stereotype of a male action hero that viewers will expect to see when watching the film. The viewer may take enjoyment and comfort in the character conforming to their typical expectations. This representation presented is not real but a version of reality. James Bond as a character has typical masculine traits such as - strength, confidence and aggression. He is also quick witted solving the problems that face him. This is a typical and mostly positive representation of males as physically fit, intelligent and confident however he also uses violence frequently which may not be considered a good trait. There is some truth in this representation because representations reflect cultural values and beliefs. Also in this film there is a typical representation of women with the character of Vesper Lynd. She is beautiful and typically feminine as she is fragile and passive - she needs protecting by a man, in this plot James Bond. This representation of women has

From Russia With Love.

From Russia With Love From Russia With Love, is a James Bond film created in 1963. It pits James Bond, the British secret agent at his best against the Russian organization SPECTRE. From Russia With Love is the second film in the long running Bond series of films. This film is the successor to Dr No, and many critics argue that these two are among the best of the Bond films, with memorable scenes, solid storyline, memorable villains and acting (Sean Connery as James Bond especially). James Bond was the creation of Ian Fleming, who began writing his first story 'Casino Royale' while on his Jamaican hideaway. After almost a decade, his stories were turned into a movie, Dr. No in 1962 which was directed by Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, although Ian Fleming still had an influence on the movies. Ian Fleming described Bond as "an interesting man to whom extraordinary things happen". This is why he chose the name James Bond, as it seems anonymous, even though James Bond is far from anonymous symbolizing a very upper class person with a good taste in cars, cigarettes and wines. The movie, From Russia with Love, was created in 1963, in the middle of the car war. Thus, it was very much influenced by the historical happenings at the time. At the time, tensions were quite high with the allies and the communists, particularly between the USA and the USSR. At the time, the

Dead Poets Society

Media coursework Dead Poets Society Rebecca Kelly For my media coursework I am going to study the scene in 'Dead Poets Society' were Neil Perry commits suicide. I will examine the media techniques used in this scene and how they affect the audience. I will discuss how the director uses different shot types, camera angles, camera movements, sound and lighting to create the atmosphere and suspense of the scene. The story of 'Dead Poets Society' is set in an American prep school called Welton High. The main characters are Neil Perry, Todd Anderson and Mr.Keating. Neil is a talented student and is well respected by his friends, he shares a room with Todd. Todd has an older bother that used to attend Welton. Todd feels he has to match his brother's high achievements. Neil and Todd are thought by Mr.Keating. Keating encourages the students to think for themselves, he also used to be a member of the Dead Poets Society. When Neil is contemplating committing suicide the lighting and camera movements are vital throughout. If the type of shots and sounds were the same all the time, there would be no drama or suspense. Even though normal shots are used, the director has done an excellent job of making them as dramatic as possible. The beginning of the scene starts with Neil and his father entering a room. A table lamp lights the room, this is called 'realist lighting'.

Michael Moores purpose in Sicko is to inform his audience about the downfalls of the hidden truth behind Health Care in America and how many American lives are lost due the lack of access to health care insurance

Maham Ahmed 4/4/2010 Period 6 AJ Special Assignment-Sicko . Documentary chosen: Sicko by Michael Moore 2. Filmmaker's purpose: Michael Moore's purpose in Sicko is to inform his audience about the downfalls of the hidden truth behind Health Care in America and how many American lives are lost due the lack of access to health care insurance which results in no treatment for their illness. 3. Filmmaker's bias: Michael Moore only uses negative health care stories of Americans and does not even show one case study where American health care was beneficial to any American; he only visits houses where the residents had terrible experiences with American health care. In addition when Moore visits other countries he notes only their benevolence towards supporting each other and focuses on only the good stories, while not even looking at one story where one had a negative experience from the health care of their country. Moore should have shown both the good and bad sides, to make his point more clear and obvious, this way his supports would not seem as biased. 4. Support/Strategies filmmaker uses to substantiate the purpose: Moore found various statistics and interviews with different individuals about their experience with health care. He uses interviews with individuals with real life experiences with American health care to make his point

How does the cinematography positively or negatively affect your opinion of this film? The cinematography had a positive affect on the way I viewed this film, as a silent film, cinematography played a key role in getting the story across to the viewer. Facial expression and body language were also a must have for this type of film in order to help convey the story line to the viewers. . How does the mise-en-scene affect your perception of this film? It is what made this film, since it is a silent film creating the right dramatic articulation is necessary to get the right emotional response from each viewer. In one scene it shows hundreds of citizens some angry, some sad, some just curious, all uniting at the docks to view their fallen comrade, this shot was used to get those same responses from the audiences at that given time and moment. . How does the use of sound affect your perception of the film? The only sound to this film was the music, there was no street sounds, horns gun fire, cannon explosions, dishes clattering people muttering about, or ship sounds only only the body language and facial expressions and captions, and music used to convey

Empire of the Sun: Basie Character Analysis

Basie's Main Characteristics Throughout the film, viewers can see that Basie has strong leader qualities that allow him to get what he wants at all times. Firstly, Basie is over beyond confident which shows that he has amazing strength and leadership qualities. For example, when they suddenly encountered the Japanese, and Basie had to fight for his life, he quickly passed his precious aviator glasses to Jamie and confidently said, "I want those back when I'm done." This shows how confident he is and how much he believes in himself. This definitely falls into the leadership category because confidence is one of the major qualities needed to become a leader (well, usually this is how people are). Secondly, in a time where starvation is growing and death had come upon Mrs. Partridge, Basie shows great leadership qualities. As soon as death had come upon Mrs. Partridge, Basie said firmly "Get Mrs. Partridge's potato." This firm command shows that Basie is the boss and leader, and that he gives the commands. Another example showing that Basie is the commander and the leader is when he says to Jamie, "Bow to the sergeant." In the toughest times, Basie just rises , and gets to his feet, showing that he's truly a commander and leader that deserves to be in this place ( because of how intelligent and strong he is). Through all his actions, Basie shows his gifted intelligent and

Macro essay

As a science fiction film, Terminator 2, fits mainly in the "humans pushing boundaries too far" thematic strand of the genre. In a world full of cyborg's trying to take over the world one man named john is trying to save the human race but a cyborg has been sent into the past to kill him as a young boy. The film tells the story of this young boy and his protector (Arnold schwarzenegger) trying to kill the evil cyborg. However the protector is a cyborg too only a good one. In order to keep the human race alive he has to protect this kid no matter what because when he becomes an adult he will be our only chance of survival. John and his protector become real close and john tries to teach his protector to be more human by showing him how people behave. As with many science fiction films, the dystopian portrait of the future society it represents is largely an opportunity to explore anxiety amongst the audience - in this case about cyborgs taking over human life and becoming evil, asking us us about wether we have started to take things too far with technogoly. The opening ten minutes of the film sets up the audience's expectations through its use of familiar sci-fi conventions such as robots, space ships and disrupture and its careful narrative structure informing us of the story so far. The film's title sequence begins with flames taking over the whole screen blazing
