Child Health Presentation Children 1st History The charity owes its existence to a little 8-year-old American girl called Mary Ellen who lived in New York during the reign of Queen Victoria. She suffered terrible abuse from her adoptive parents and was eventually discovered by a churchworker who tried to persuade the police to do something about it. But due to an absence of laws that allowed intervention at the time meant agencies were powerless to help. The church worker in desperation turned to the New York Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Their officers went to Mary Ellen's house removed her and prosecuted her adoptive parents - cruelty to an animal of the human species. The NYSPCC was born 1875 884 SPCC in London 889 Glasgow & Edinburgh joined to become SNSPCC - also first act of parliament for the prevention of cruelty to children was passed. Name Change 921 - Scottish National Society receives royal charter and therefore becomes Royal Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children. 995 - Becomes Children 1st Get Involved Who gets involved?
