Aftermath BANG! I woke. I opened my eyes but was unable to see. The dust had settled like concrete boulders into the corners of my eyes! Everything was deadly still. The wind fiercely gave a shout. A black cloud stood dominating the demolished town. I moved my hands to wipe my irritated eyes, boulders, brickwork, broken furniture and complete devastation stood before me. A ray of light appeared through cracks of the rubble. The boulders took on features like monsters and ogres - making my chest tighten with fear. I vociferated for help. No one was around. I was scared: Petrified. I managed to pull my achy bones out from the debris, the pain was horrific. I could feel the cold misty wind stroke my face. In the far distance I could hear low voices that became louder and louder: hysterical screams. I attempted to crawl my way towards the noise - in hope for help. Shards of glass dug into the palms of my hands. Warm blood trickled down my knees, my throat tightened with the dirty dense dust. I could taste the fear. Behind me I heard a crackle. I turned. The flames of fire danced before my eyes. The heat scorched my face like the hottest sauna could. The smoke was a ferocious lion ready to pounce. I moved as quickly as I could, using all the energy I had. Slowly crawling like a young baby. I felt hopeless: disconsolate! The further I crawled the louder the low voices

Are Movie Stars' Weddings Too Extravagant?

2009 UE Section B Q.2 Dear Editor, Noticing the trickles of extravagant weddings sta+ged by movie stars in recent years, I cannot help suspiring how millions of dollars could have been better spent instead of being squandered on events that could have been just as beautiful and memorable if the budget was cut half. I am therefore writing this letter to express my serious concern over the despicable behaviour of these public figures who clearly have little idea of what it really takes to have an unforgettable wedding. It is not exactly inconceivable why movie stars tend to spend profusely - that they wish to garner media attention and show off their wealth and affluence to the world. But as often as we learn of star wedding news, equally frequently are we aware that they divorce a few years - or more outrageously a few months - after marriage. I have to say I am surprised at how marriage could be as disrespected as such. I am doubly surprised at how forgetful these people are, obviously having no memory of their vows and commitments on their lavish wedding day. It is henceforth a headache think of marriage being treated as a ridiculous game. With this in mind - that marriage is now nothing more than an empty concept that lacks respect and dignity - one comes to the conclusion that it is simply pointless in holding wedding parties at exorbitant prices. Antoine Tuesday 17th of November 2009 LaCour Contrast Essay 2nde4 The bright orange sun slowly rose above the horizon of the city of New Orleans. It was a special day, Mardi Gras day. The people had been preparing for weeks. They had multi-coloured costumes and massive, feather-covered floats parked in their garages or alleyways. At around 6 AM, the first New Orleanians were in the wide streets parading. They were throwing hundreds of bead necklaces which wrapped around the power lines and the branches of the blooming magnolia trees, reflecting the brilliant sunlight. It seemed that gold dust was falling from the trees. The dazzling paraders were beating on tambourines, playing trumpets, trombones, saxophones and drums. Many people were on their iron balconies cheering. The parade had started to grow and was now like a snake slithering through the streets of the French Quarter. The gigantic floats represented dragons or pirate ships. They were full of revellers throwing bead necklaces to the parade-goers. These were dressed in shiny, bright colours such as green, yellow or purple, the traditional colours of Mardi Gras. People drank 'Hurricanes' from colourful plastic cups. Then one of the many Indian bands passed. They were all dressed in Indian costumes but the chief was all in flashy colours such as yellow or pink and marched in Indian file

Compare How Agard Challenges Particular Values and Ways of Thinking in 'Listen Mr. Oxford Don' and 'Half Caste' The poems, 'Listen Mr. Oxford Don' and 'Half Caste' were both written by John Agard, and in both of these poems, Agard challenges the status quo. In 'Listen Mr. Oxford Don', he challenges the use of language and in 'Half Caste', he challenges views of ethnicity. In the poem 'Listen Mr. Oxford Don', Agard characterizes Mr. Oxford Don as the 'Guardian of English', and the idea of a person who uses the 'correct' form of English. In this poem, Agard challenges the view that Standard English is the correct form of English, and other forms of English are of a lesser status. In the poem 'Half Caste', Agard challenges the reader prejudices towards people of mixed ethnicity. In 'Listen Mr. Oxford Don', Agard uses repetition of particular words and imagery to help him convey his ideas. He uses the phrase, "is a dangerous one" twice in the poem. He also uses sentence like, "I ent have no gun" to create the image of violence. Words such as, 'bashing' and 'slashing' are also used by Agard which suggest him being very threatening. The reason that Agard creates all these violent images is because he wants us to know that he's a peaceful man, but he can be very dangerous if people think that English has to be spoken in a particular way. Travel and tourism letter for a school trip.

6/12/10 Dear Parents, Re: Travel and Tourism trip to The Tower of London Friday 10/12/10 Our first travel and tourism trip of the school year will be to the Tower of London this Friday. The purpose of the trip is to visit one of London's major tourist attractions. During the visit they will have the opportunity to look around the Tower of London and hopefully see the Crown Jewels. There will also be an education session led by one of the Tower of London staff on travel and tourism related issues such as customer service, guest care, marketing and so on. We will be travelling by bus and underground to Tower Hill. Programme. Timings will be approximate. 09:00 Leave school 0:15 Arrive at the Tower of London 0:30 Look around the Tower 2:00 Education talk 3:30 Lunch 4:00 Either continue the tour of the Tower or walk along the south bank to visit some other landmarks 5:45 Arrive back at Turn Pike Lane Students will need to wear uniform for this trip and will need to bring a packed lunch. Smoking In this essay am going to be talking about smoking and my opinions on this topic, I hope that this speech explains why you should disagree with smoking. I feel that there should be laws against smoking. Right now there are laws against buying them. You have to be 21 to buy cigarettes. But my question is if you have to be 21 why do people under 21 have possession of cigarettes? We all already know that smoking is bad for you. On the news all the time they have something about smoking and why it is so bad for you. Even on the cigarette box there is a message about what smoking can do to you, and this message is saying that Cigarettes are hazardous to your health. But still millions of people are smoking. I see it like this... If they put a label on a cigarette box saying "These will eventually kill you" people will still smoke it. We all know the dangers of smoking, why not put a law out to make it illegal? I think the reason people do not comprehend that smoking is so bad for you, is because they are already addicted and they don't care what it does to them. But if the law made it illegal to sell them, then many people would not have access to cigarettes. So they could not smoke and millions of lives would be saved each year, because both my parents smoke it has made me realise how bad the effects of smoking are, and I won't ever smoke. First Time at Times Square

First Time at Times Square I never forget the first time when I visited the Times Square. The excitement I felt just as a small child may feel at an amusement park: excited, curious, and anxious to do and see absolutely everything. The first thing impressed me was the smell of the Times Square. The ever changing smells of Times Square amaze me. I take a few short strides along the side walk and the smells of freshly cooked shish'ka'bobs being sold by a street vendor fills the air with a sweet fragrance of barbeque chicken. Suddenly, after a few more strides along the same wide stretch of sidewalk packed full of tourist, vendors and street performers, the air is now full of the smell of roasted peanuts, almonds, and cashews. However, not all of the smells are mouth watering. Most of the street corners have either huge round sewage drains, or rectangular ones with bars. Through the gaps and holes of these sewage drains seep such a fowl smelling odor that you soon forget any of the pleasant ones surrounding it. As I walked over one of the old odorous drains, hot steam flew up and out of it, right up my nostrils and triggered my gag reflexes. Traffic Wardens:. The first thing that I would out into room 101 is the money grabbing, cold-hearted, kill joy mugs. These people walk around, head down, scribbling away in their nasty little books, feeling proud of ruining yet another innocent person's day. If you haven't guessed yet, I am talking about the selfish traffic wardens. 99.9% of vehicle/car owners don't even realise that they have done anything to deserve a parking ticket! How would you like it if you had paid for a 1hour pay and display ticket and you came to your care at 1 minute past and a warden was stamping the sticky yellow piece of paper on your windscreen?. For arriving at your car one minute late you have to pay a massive fine of £30. Right, imagine this. You have just had the most wonderful day out with your family, and you all had a good time, suddenly you walk over to your car to find the dreaded yellow ticket. The smiles have now hit the floor. But wait, you check your paid and displayed ticket and you are back before the expiry time...so why are you getting charged? Then you read the note... You put your parking ticket on the wrong side of the windscreen. How can there be a right and wrong side to put a paid and displayed ticket? Creative Writing - The day I was broken. As I awoke from my interrupted sleep, the sound of rushing and shouting filled my ears. It was of course the day I had been waiting for my whole life, and by the sounds of it, so had everyone else. I could hear the maids scuttling around, arranging flowers outside my front door. I could hear the clanging of knives and forks against my brand new oak table. My eyes were still closed, I felt as though my dream was finally becoming a delightful reality. Half of me didn't really want to wake up from my dream of the night before where I dreamt of the moment I walked down the aisle accompanied by my Father. I pictured how beautiful I would look, my snow coloured satin dress, flowing behind me, glistening in time with the flickering of the golden candles. I just can't wait! At long last, I opened my eyes to the elegant room I had slept in. Through my thin white silk curtains, I saw the glowing of thick snow upon the ground outside. The day just keeps getting better! Compare Love After Love with one other poem and explore the theme of self-discovery in each of the poems. In 'Love After Love' and 'Presents From My Aunts', the theme of self-discovery is addressed. LAL discusses reverting back to your true self after the break down of a relationship whilst, Presents is about a teenager's struggles of finding herself in terms of her culture. Both poems use language to convey the importance of self-discovery. In LAL, emotive language is used. For example, 'welcome', 'greet' and 'elation'. This shows the excitement in finding yourself again. Presents similarly uses emotive words; however, for a much more negative approach. She 'longed' for the conventional 'denim and corduroy' and felt 'alien' in the 'glistening' salwar kameez. Her choice of vocabulary show her discomfort to the clothes and, in turn, she feels disconnected from her P Pakistani roots. Personally, I find this disheartening to see how she feels so distant from her culture, an importance part of her identity. Alternatively, in LAL religious connotations are used. It says 'Give wine. Give bread.' This could be used to signify the importance as 'wine' and 'bread' could be associated with the last supper or the Christian Eucharist services. Both poems also use structure to further explore self-discovery. LAL features an enjambaunt: 'Give back your heart/to itself'. This could have
